Facing resistance and fear head-on, Jack explored his trauma, childhood struggles, and financial hardships, creating space to process his feelings and move away from a victim mindset. Compassion, understanding, and acceptance became guiding principles, allowing Jack to integrate his past. In this episode, Jack encourages listeners to trust themselves, accept where they are, and embrace change with the intuition to follow curious questions wherever they may lead. You may start your own journey with judgment, but be open to explore it. Tune in to be inspired as Jack candidly shares his journey with mental health, self-worth and trauma. A deep and personal conversation with Alex Ayin where he unravels a journey he hasn't previously shared. Alex found validation through sports, a thread that weaves throughout. In parts, our conversation evolves into a coaching session, delving deeper into Alex's identity. We explore his struggles with fitting into school, navigating his mixed heritage, and managing overt racism. Alex had to stop playing Rugby in his teens due to an injury, where he started Water Polo. Inspiration for Alex stems from his grandfathers — one a WWII survivor and the stories he shared, the other who bravely moved the family from Africa to the UK. Yet, Alex's path to success wasn't linear. Despite starting on a very prestigious graduate scheme at Virgin, he dropped out of the programme to the disbelief of his family. This is a very reflective conversation where he shares he stopped drinking, leaving Social Chain and questions his identity and type of person he wants to be. He shares a concept of diversification of identity - you as a human aren't classified as just one thing. Alex shares his journey and the values and beliefs from family first, outworking the competition reframing negative experiences and finally the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, a lesson passed down from both his parents and as a United fan how the legendary football manager Alex Ferguson did. For Alex, sport isn't just about physical activity; they're integral to the fabric of his life. Tune in to hear this reflective and honest conversation. Jason's path didn't lead him to university, but does that define him? It did give him a bit of a chip on his shoulder. After leaving school, he was presented with two options: go to university or join the Navy. Growing up in Portsmouth, Jason had to hustle to make ends meet. His parents made it clear that if he wasn't continuing his studies, he couldn't just stay at home all day. Unexpectedly, his mentors were the older men he played football with, who taught him valuable life lessons. Jason's main goal back then? To figure out how to afford a BMW. Despite lacking a university degree, Jason had a wealth of real-life experiences and a valuable skillset. He took chances, worked hard and networked tirelessly. He landed a position in a prestigious consulting firm that typically only hired graduates. Was it luck, or were they lucky to have him? Jason used this opportunity to soak up as much knowledge as possible and ask endless questions. Reflecting on his younger years, Jason chased traditional markers of success: money, a fancy car, and an impressive job title, all about "keeping up with the Joneses." Now, his definition of success has shifted. He values spending quality time with his wife and daughter, prioritising activities he genuinely enjoys and seeking these out. This episode focuses on Jason's journey as an introvert, the lessons learned from mentors, struggles with anxiety, how therapy shaped his leadership skills, the emotional impact of a miscarriage, and his ongoing experiments in life. Join us as Jason shares his unique path and insights on success, personal growth, and being a genuine human. Mark is a commercially focused Sales and People professional with a genuine human side, revealing his true self. Growing up in a council estate, Mark's parents worked hard to make ends meet – his mum as a housewife and his dad as a car mechanic, often taking on private clients on weekends to supplement the family income. With limited indulgences, Mark learned the value of money and success early on. His view of success was symbolised by the need to own a sit-on lawn mower and having a solicitor on speed dial. Mark left school being told he had two options: becoming a builder or working in a 'bank'. After a short stint as a builder and desiring a different life, Mark joined a bank, where it all started. At 19, Mark was managing and leading a team of 12, relishing the responsibility and excelling at his role. Early feedback was instrumental in his career growth, prompting him to reconsider how he spoke and interacted with leaders in the bank. Mark has always been conscious of his environment and operates with subtlety rather than extremes. He reflects on the societal markers of success, realising true success today lies in prioritising his health and well-being. He learned some of this the hard way. Mark emphasises the importance of feedback and choosing the right role models for you, rather than what social media portrays as 'success'. He encourages listeners to embrace self-awareness, vulnerability, and independence as core signs of strength. Tune in to this down-to-earth and relatable episode as Mark shares his journey of success, self-discovery, and embracing authenticity.Mark #YouAreAClassOfYourOwn Guest Mark Pettican: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-pettican-489ba2/ Listen on Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a-class-of-their-own/id1732288997 Watch on:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@aclassoftheirownpodcast/podcasts Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7Apq2pSbmvytPjABrlidpN?si=4d62eba56abb45ad Social mediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/aclassoftheirownpodcast TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@aclassoftheirownpodcast LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/aclassoftheirownpodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aclassoftheirownpodcast Website:https://www.playforchange.co.uk/aclassoftheirownpodcast Host: Mira Magechahttps://www.linkedin.com/in/miramagecha https://www.instagram.com/mira_magecha Creative Director: Alex Paynehttps://www.instagram.com/alexjamespayne Editor: Josh Partridgehttps://www.instagram.com/joshfilmmaker Music: Jay Witsey https://www.instagram.com/jay.witsey Sponsor:https://corporate.moneysupermarket.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/moneysupermarket-group
