One of the biggest struggles many people face when decluttering is that they want to (and try to) predict the future in order to know what to keep and what to declutter. Since it isn't possible to predict the future, decluttering paralysis can happen. Today I'm talking about how knowing the path and how it will work out as I declutter helps me scratch the itch of needing/wanting to know the future. My booksWant to be a patron of the show? I've learned a thing or two (or thirty-three-trillion) about decluttering, and that includes how to identify thought patterns that need to serve as signals that it's time to declutter. This week, I'm talking about three moments when I've learned to hesitate . . . and declutter.Take Your House Back is on sale through May 3rd!  My booksWant to be a patron of the show? I recently heard a discussion of something that used to be very common: hope chests. It hit me that a hope chest is a container for things for the future, and since a lot of "us" fret about whether we can/should keep things we legitimately may need in the future but don't need now, I thought it was a good concept to discuss. My booksWant to be a patron of the show? As I was doing my time-consuming curly hair routine in a big hurry recently, I started thinking about decluttering. (I'm always thinking about decluttering, so that isn't a surprise.) I thought about how I'm only successful decluttering when I follow my five step No Mess Decluttering Process, whether I have to declutter in a hurry or I have lots of time available. In this episode, I'm talking about how the same process looks in these different situations. My booksWant to be a patron of the show? It's easy to get discouraged when you look at all the things that could or should be happening. But focusing on "better" all along the way is how you get there. And celebrating "better" is one of the best ways to keep going! Mentioned: My booksBecome a Patron of the show.Need (or want to be) a decluttering coach? Hosted on Acast. Last week, I shared six things I still struggle with in my home, and this week I'm sharing the good news! There are things that definitely used to be a struggle that aren't a struggle any more. What a relief! For most of my life, I didn't think I'd conquer these things. Important links: My booksWant to be a patron of the show? I've been told many times that some people find encouragement from knowing that this "slob struggle" is a lifelong struggle. Knowing that it isn't something that ever goes away means you don't have to feel defeated when you find yourself struggling, you just need to apply the strategies that help you manage this struggle successfully. My booksWant to be a patron of the show? I'm often asked what to do when things definitely fit into the space (the container concept) but it's still too much stuff. That's where your Clutter Threshold comes in. Lately, I've been thinking about my (weird) tendency to hold back creativity out of fear it will run out. I know from lots of experience that this isn't how creativity works! I'm talking about resisting the urge to hoard creativity and how that affects and applies to the stuff in my house. Mentioned: Find a Decluttering Coach! Definitely not entirely related to one or the other. probably effected by both, but not one or the other. My mom is a clean freak, she grew up in very unstable environment, not clean or safe. It was her mission to not have us, or her, continue to experience the same. Plus she's very type A kinda personality. I am very not. My kids have a safe, reasonably clean, but cluttered, and a touch chaotic home lol. 5 kids and we homeschool, so there's Alot of people and stuff in a small house!

I don’t see any problem with asking my husband, “hey can you please put your drill away?” 🤷🏻‍♀️ and sometimes I do just put his stuff away himself. My hubby is very easy going enough that a little nagging isn’t a big deal with him though

And now it’s kind of a game for me to constantly be trying to stay on top of the kitchen throughout the day!

The things you say that were profound for you but seem like “duh” reality once you know it, resonate so truly with me. The fact that a clean kitchen means someone cleaned it - I needed to accept this just like you did. It has been so helpful to me and for some reason I am no longer annoyed that I have to do the same things over and over to keep things maintained. You are my favorite of all the cleaning/decluttering/organizing people I’ve listened to. You just “click” with me! ♥️

The sneak attack is terrible advice. Especially for a child that may have any sort of processing issue, or add, adhd, ocd, ect. This happened to me several times as a child and it was traumatic and still makes me feel upset when I think about it.

Also, this is my first ever podcast, and I found it upon recommendation, came to the list, and pulled the finger equivalent of the Price Is Right wheel, scrolling down and chose a random one. The Universe provides, though, because holy bananas - you're speaking to my soul here! I struggle with hoarding, and long to be like my best friend, who naturally tidies/straightens throughout the day without thinking about it. I love the concept of separating out these terms, and I'm going to download some of these podcasts for a trip I have tomorrow - this is really helpful. Thank you, so much!!

I don't mean to be disrespectful or anything, but don't your husband and kids ever help? it seems like there's constant mess and there's no way it's just you making it, but I never hear about them helping. why is this hard work delegated only to you?

We got rid of our coffee table in the living room, when I realized that its chief function was to be the place we dropped things and then left them. Getting rid of that piece of furniture was a huge help in getting my living room clutter under control.
