32-year-old Nick Reiner simply said “Yes Your Honor” today in court, but his attorney and siblings had much more to say following his brief hearing. The state of Georgia has just suspended the execution of 52-year-old Stacey Humphreys scheduled for this Wednesday. Because two members of its pardons and parole board have alleged conflicts of interest, the clemency hearing scheduled for today has now been “postponed until further notice.” Humphreys had already made headlines earlier for his exorbitant and jaw dropping last meal request which you have to hear to believe. Finally, as Florida continues its record setting year of executions, its last lethal injection is set for Thursday, just as new research shows public opposition for the death penalty is at its highest level in nearly 50 years. The developing news today has left so many shocked and horrified: A beloved Hollywood legend and his wife, responsible for so many of the movies that made us laugh and cry over the years, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. To make matters worse, we soon found out that their own son has been booked for their murders. And to make matters even worse, our own President took the moment in the hours after the killings to mock the tragedy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Criminal Defense Attorney Alison Triessl joins Amy and T.J. to discuss today’s sooner than expected guilty verdict in the Brian Walshe trial. Triessl talks about how the defense overplayed its hand, and already had an uphill battle with those devastating and gruesome searches Brian made shortly after his wife Ana’s death. Despite the prosecution’s lackluster presentation, and the lack of a body or known cause of death, it took the jury less than 6 hours to return a guilty verdict. After less than 6 hours the jury in the Brian Walshe trial came back with the unanimous decision to find him guilty as charged. Walshe appeared emotionless and had zero interaction with his defense team as the decision was read aloud. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Police have confirmed they have a man in custody in connection with Saturday’s mass shooting at Brown University that left 2 students dead and 9 others injured. The shelter in place order was finally lifted more than 13 hours after the university told students to “Run, Hide or Fight” with an armed, active shooter on campus. Amy and T.J go over the latest details on a story that has shaken the ivy league campus as students were taking their last finals before the holidays.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

39-year-old Sherrone Moore is waking up with an electronic monitoring device after being charged with felony third degree home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering. Moore was fired by the University of Michigan earlier this week after they learned of a years long inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Within an hour, prosecutors say he barged into that woman’s house and everything unraveled from there in a shocking series of events. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The prosecution spent a little more than half an hour trying to convince the jury to use their common sense and convict Brian Walshe of First Degree murder for what they call the “violent death” of his wife Ana on New Year’s Day three years ago. Just after noon ET, the jury began their deliberations and were given three options for their verdict: Guilty of first-degree murder, guilty of second-degree murder, or not guilty.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The defense attorney for Brian Walshe, Larry Tipton, spent this morning making his best case for why jurors should find Brian Walshe not guilty of first degree murder in the death of his wife Ana. Despite the gruesome searches and the fact that Walshe has admitted to dismembering and disposing of his wife’s body, Tipton told jurors that there is no evidence that Brian ever once thought about harming his wife, claiming the only evidence was love.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In a case that eerily mimics the gruesome details coming out of the Brian Walshe trial, a Swiss man has just been formally charged with murdering his wife, dismembering her body, and then dissolving her body parts in a blender. He’s been charged with murder and disturbing the peace of the dead after police say he strangled 38-year-old former Miss Switzerland finalist Kristina Joksimovic and the mother of his two young daughters.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A somewhat shocking day in the Brian Walshe trial with the defense announcing not only will Brian Walshe not testify, no one else will either. It’s a decision based on strategic confidence or avoidance of risk, but either way, the defense surprised a number of legal experts who were anticipating at least a few witnesses to take the stand in defense of Walshe. Today’s decision suggests Walshe’s defense team feels good about their ability to sew reasonable doubt in the minds of jurors through their cross examination of the state’s witnesses. Closing arguments are set for tomorrow!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It was the prosecution’s final day of testimony and they saved the best for last. The day began with Gem Mutlu, one of the Walshe’s dear friends and most notably, the man who spent New Year’s Eve with the couple in the hours leading up to Ana’s death. The prosecution struggled with Mutlu’s testimony, and it’s unclear whether it did more harm than good. The final witness for the state was one of Ana’s best friends who had some incredible details we have yet to hear about the Walshe’s marriage, but once again, she seems to have both helped and hurt the case against Walshe. The family of a 1989 murder victim speaks out moments after her murderer was executed. The state of Florida put 58-year-old Mark Allen Geralds to death by lethal injection Tuesday night. Amy and T.J. discuss Geralds’ bizarre last words plus preview Thursday’s scheduled execution of a Tennessee man whose attorneys say will be the first man executed for a crime he pleaded guilty to committing. And finally, the Supreme Court is taking up a case out of Alabama, where that state is trying to execute a man two lower courts have ruled is intellectually disabled.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It was a complicated, technical day of blood evidence highly important to the prosecution’s case, but the problem was, it was difficult for anyone other than a forensic scientist to absorb and understand the testimony. Walshe’s attorneys were able to keep things simple on cross examination though, getting the state’s witnesses to admit two very important things to the jury. First, that there was no blood found in the Walshe’s bedroom or bathrooms, and second, while there was blood found on the basement floor, no crime lab test could reveal how or when that blood got there. The Brian Walshe trial wrapped up its 6th day of testimony with a number of eerie visuals and evidence. Jurors saw Brian Walshe shopping for dismemberment supplies within hours of Ana Walshe’s death, even bringing their child with him to a follow up visit to the store. We also heard and saw photos of blood stains found in the Walshe home on rugs and towels, on a knife and on the basement floor, but as Amy and T.J. discuss, the defense continued to score points in cross examination.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
