It’s officially Women’s History Month and we’re absolutely celebrating here at Brave New Teaching! While we firmly believe that we should be doing this work all year round, it’s still powerful to pause and have some intentionality behind what’s being celebrated this month. For us, that’s not only women’s voices, but also women’s issues, both past and present. In today’s episode, we’re highlighting different female voices and resources that you can use with your students this month from poetry to speeches to film and more. Celebrating these voices from all different intersections of identity can spark new conversations in the classroom and help our students see beyond their own experiences and biases. This is definitely one to bookmark and share with a teacher friend!RESOURCES MENTIONED:Join Happy Hour!Curriculum RehabDown with the Reading QuizAmerican Leaders' Speeches Choice BoardWomen’s History Month: Digital Choice BoardPersephone ReturnsThe Tragedy of Greek Goddesses How Film Changes How We See the WorldMaya Anelou’s “Phenomenal Woman”Phenomenal Woman Script & NotesPhenomenal Woman Permission SlipCaste, by Isabel Wilkerson Origin - official trailerConnect with us on Instagram @bravenewteachingFollow Marie on Instagram: @thecaffeinatedclassFollow Amanda on Instagram: @mudandinkteachingLet us know what you think! Today we’re debuting The Brave New Teaching Challenge, and it’s all about setting intentions for your year. Here’s the best part about this challenge. We’re doing it together one step at a time. That means this is a no-pressure situation. You have plenty of time to get this done alongside your busy schedule! All the details of the challenges are laid out in this free Intention Journal. These intention challenges are meant to push you (in a gentle way) to think about things that are going to help you grow in your personal and professional life. And remember, you’re not in this alone! We are doing this in real time with you. In fact, it all starts in today’s episode. We’ll walk you through the first challenge for January and February. We understand the importance (and challenge) of finding engaging and effective ways to assess student learning. That’s why we created a F-R–E-E masterclass that walks you through three formative assessments that will change the way you teach reading. In this episode, you’ll hear a snipper of this masterclass, which focuses on the one pager quiz. Generally in the world of ELA, one pagers are thought of as a summative assessment. But in this training, we share how to use them as formative assessments. One pager quizzes are just one of the changes that we’ve made in our classrooms that have positively impacted the way that our students interact with the content. You can check out the full free masterclass, Down With the Reading Quiz, here! When you sign up for the masterclass, you’ll be sent a link right away to watch the training on your own time. We’re excited to share another installment of our unit makeover series. This time we’re delving into teaching rhetoric analysis in the classroom. We’ve noticed a pattern in the feedback we receive from you, our listeners, and we’ve decided to structure this episode as a mini-professional development session for teaching rhetoric. You’ll hear our two main approaches to teaching rhetoric: a focus on text or a focus on skills. A text-centered approach involves using a central text and supplementing it with other texts to teach the skills of rhetorical analysis. On the other hand, a skills-centered approach involves teaching students how to deconstruct arguments and analyze rhetoric without a specific central text.We share plenty of examples for both approaches, which we hope will give you lots of ideas to take back to your students! Let’s paint a picture of a scenario that most of us have likely been in at one point or another. You have a list of literary terms that you want your students to learn. You’re teaching them over and over (and over) again. You’ve given them the lists. You’ve played Kahoot and Jeopardy. You’ve done all the things, and yet, your students still can’t analyze literacy terms.Sound familiar? Well, have you tried caring less and letting them cheat? We know it sounds crazy, but hear us out! It actually makes more sense than you think. About reading a whole novel aloud in class: “If I was your department chair, we’d have a problem!” My department chair just made us read an entire novel in class with freshmen. Told us it was not an option. Left almost no time for what we’re actually there to do. 🤦🏼‍♀️ She also removed Shakespeare from our curriculum this year because “the PLC feels the kids don’t benefit from it, and we need to hear other people’s opinions.” My colleague who agrees with me and I don’t have opinions that count in our PLC because the things we want to do are “too hard.”

Thanks for doing self- care differently than making it another chore teachers have to do! 🤪 it is still high 80’s at Halloween where I live, which is weird after 30 yrs in the Rockies. So I blast the AC at night in order to use a thin blanket. The cost of that is a luxury I need. I also do not care about manis, pedis, and massages most of the time. But those biannual haircuts with the head and neck washing? Call me melted! LOL thanks for all the episodes, ladies!
