November 24, 1971: A man calling himself Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Orient Flight 305 in Portland, showed flight attendant Florence Schaffner a bomb, and demanded $200,000 and four parachutes. Somewhere over the dark forests of southwestern Washington, he lowered the rear stairs, strapped $200,000 to his chest, and jumped into a freezing rainstorm. He was never seen again.
