Someone please look through the last 50 years of USC football and see if you can find anything close to this grand championship lineage that everyone pretends that school has. They were allowed to keep one title from the Pete Carroll era, I believe. But even if we don't consider that era, look at the few decades that preceded it. Every once in awhile they'd be up for a couple of years, but you're going to see a lot of multiple-loss seasons in there. It had a great run of running backs. it did not have any sort of run of being in the hunt for solo national titles.
As long as we're leaving it entirely up to listeners to provide context for the statements made by the podcast host, I guess I'll just throw out there that the main reason that Saban didn't succeed in Miami was likely because his medical staff couldn't recommend that they sign and keep Drew Brees, so he was forced to have to try to play with Dante Culpepper. He didn't take over a ready-made team and fail. He took over a s*** team that didn't have a quarterback and it's medical staff couldn't clear Drew Brees' arm. It likely doesn't really have anything to do with whether Saban was equipped for "the NFL game."
if USC hires Franklin it will seal the fate of that program for at least four more years. He was fortunate to be at Vanderbilt during the demise of Florida and a down period for Georgia. He never had a single signature career coaching win until he was at Penn state. And I think we're forgetting that he is not the one who turned that program around. The previous coach is the one that saved Penn State and he only left because he went to the NFL. Franklin has the luxury of every other program in that region being down, so like Paterno before him he gets first dibs on just about every great player from about a 20% section of the country. That is always what Penn state's recruiting has been built on. He is a poor game manager, has always been known as not being a particularly bright X's and O's guy, he left Vanderbilt after being a tangential part of a rape scandal (he directly called the alleged victim on the telephone, for Christ's sake) and fostered a poisonous atmosphere in State Colleg
nice
They seem to be missing something here. Granted, if there is no Big 12 conference, then a contract between it and ESPN could be dissolved. But there's a sticking point here. If ESPN was party to causing the Big 12 to disappear, I'm pretty sure that's actionable by the Big 12, and there will be a lawsuit or a significant settlement to smooth that little detail over. Or are we now saying that it is okay to destroy entities with whom you have a contract so that you do not need to fulfill the terms of that contract?
the take in this show is completely biased from the start. NLI should have existed a long time ago. What Reggie was accused of had nothing to do with him but his family and that is fact. He earned the Heisman on the field. If tou want to say SC was buying players back then look at what Bama has been doing for 10+ years buying players and there is no comparison. Give Reggie his Heisman back now.
Aaaand more exaggerations regarding the impact of these rulings. There are very simple workarounds to all of these things -as far as the schools are concerned - that are completely ignored as touts breathlessly rush to their microphones to put forth the "worst case" scenarios as the most likely.
Regarding the inequities between the men and women in the NCAA tournaments, it's one thing for it to become a small national story. It's another for it to be something that people get their backs up over. To be perfectly honest, the overwhelming majority of people with whom that story even registered thought to themselves, "But ... the women DON'T really deserve to have the same facilities as the men do until their tournament becomes something that people want to actually watch." Most folks wouldn't care if they heard that the women's tournament was held in high school gymnasiums.
Okay. If these guys are going to make up this fantasy world in which Vanderbilt or Rutgers makes it to the 4-team playoff, I will do the same thing and say that stating that no SEC champion will ever NOT make the playoff is ridiculous. In any given season you can have the winner of the SEC championship game have two or more losses while there are enough legitimate zero- and one-loss teams in other conferences to fill those four spots. Now, between their scenario regarding MAKING the playoff and my scenario regarding an SEC champion NOT making the playoff, which one is more likely?
I can certainly see how a school's athletic director may set that 85 scholarship limit and want to stick to it for matters of consistency. But I have not yet heard an argument that this handful of extra students is going to cost these universities much of anything. If the universities lost money on scholarships they wouldn't complain every time their number is reduced. Scholarships cost a school nothing. There ARE other associated costs per player but nowhere near the level that a smaller school can't absorb it if it has an extra 10 guys floating around. this whole concept that the super seniors are going to cost the school's big money is pure b******* and anyone with half a brain would know it does not pass the smell test.
I have little doubt that these college administrations and athletic directors are encouraging coaches to keep the rosters down to roughly their 85 usual scholarships. but it hasn't got a goddamn thing to do with money part of it is going to be to avoid that crunch in a year or two, and part of it is that things can become a little unwieldy trying to accommodate 10 or 20 extra players scholarships are basically free as far as the universities go. they would double the number of them if they were allowed to. it costs the school nothing to let a kid go there for free. but you do have to house, feed, and keep out of jail and extra 10 or 20 players if you allow your roster to mushroom like that.
Penn State will never make the playoff as long as James Franklin is head coach unless Ohio State gets a postseason ban.
What James Franklin did at Vanderbilt was fall into a job while Georgia was in disarray and Florida was in decline. He didn't have a single signature win while there, and he was a small part of a rape investigation when he left for Penn State. the only reason he has had success in Pennsylvania is the same reason Paterno did: there is no recruiting competition in the region. when there was at Virginia and Virginia Tech, Paternos teams went into decline.
I don't know if Hueple will work out, but Tennessee dodged a bullet if it ended up not saddled with James Franklin, who didn't have a signal signature win his entire time at Vanderbilt, left after being a likely minor part of a rape scandal, and proceeded to have only one notable win at Penn State. The guy has never been respected as an Xs and O's guy, merely as a recruiter. And the reason he would turn down Tennessee is because there is no recruiting competition for Penn State in its entire region. It's a little bit of a different story for Tennessee.
Yet again, Cannell proving he is one of the dumbest people in college football media. Hell, let's just delay the national title game until March if the important thing is to make sure EVERYONE is healthy. Ohio State has had the entire season to get its s*** together regarding COVID and it never has done it. The rest of the sport needn't be penalized because of that fact. If you can't play, run the white flag up the pole and go on with your business. If you want to play for a national title, get your ass on the field Monday night.
The fact of the matter is that you need to a completely blow up the current system and alignments before you can expand the playoff. They missed the biggest problem with simply granting automatic bids to conference title game winners. What kind of argument can you make for the three loss division winner who happened to upset a perfect or one loss team from the other division in the conference title game? How is including that team advancing the cause of finding the most legitimate claimant to the football crown?
I can't begin to say how much confidence it gives me in these idiots that they apparently need to take notes and have the ability to rewind and rerun plays in order to tell what they are watching right in front of them when they are taking in a football game. I can only imagine how difficult it was to figure out whether Alabama was indeed better than Texas A&M back when Alabama beat them. Without the ability to take notes and rerun plays it must have been damn near impossible for these guys who do this podcast. I am beginning to form the opinion that Danny Cannel is the dumbest man in college football media.
Just to be clear, the only person in the entire country making an argument for Texas A&M over Notre Dame is Jimbo Fisher. As far as the public is concerned, the argument Texas A&M has is being included instead of Ohio State.
