We’re still talking about the groups that were attacked in Taylor Nolan’s tweets … and NO we are not done (slaps hand on face emoji). Taylor made some disgusting tweets about Indian people. This week Danielle is telling us about a case that takes place in New Delhi, India. Danielle tells us, briefly, about India’s current COVID crisis. She then goes on to tell us about Priyadarshini Mattoo. Priya, for short, was a beautiful 23-year-old law student that was stalked and brutally murdered. The injustice of her murder is brought to light, while highlighting other cases that occurred around the same time. There is a conviction at the end, but the final outcome will leave you shocked, angry, and speechless! On that note, f**k people that fat shame, Bachelor give us a real size contestant soon please! Danielle talks about the Patriarca Crime Family that is currently run by Carmen “the Big Cheese or the Cheese Man” Dinunzio. She discusses the origin of the Patriarca Crime Family and their ups and downs over the years. She also discusses recent legislation the Dismantle Mass Incarceration for Public Health Act. This week Megan tells the Story of Ernesto Miranda, whose life has left a lasting impact on the criminal justice system in the United States. Megan has noticed a lot of Bachelor Nation lives in Arizona, and SEVERAL members of Bach Nation go to Habit Salon outside of Phoenix, SO, Megan tells the story of Ernesto Miranda, a young man who grew up near Phoenix, Arizona, and was murdered at the age of 34. Ernesto had his own criminal history, including a 1963 rape and kidnapping. Megan won’t go into details about this. Ernesto’s trial (and re-trial) led to the United States Supreme Court case that has had a lasting impact on the criminal justice system in America - it’s Miranda v. Arizona (aka your Miranda rights). We’re still working through the communities that were attacked in Taylor Nolan’s tweets. This week, Megan focuses on the Jewish community and talks about Anti-Semitism around the world and in the United States. We jump in the way back machine, to 1913 and Megan tells the story of 13-year-old Mary Phagan who was murdered at the Atlanta, Georgia factory she worked in. Media attention turned to the supervisor of the factory, Leo Frank, a Jewish man. Leo is then tried and convicted of Mary’s murder, on very suspicious testimony. After his sentence is commuted, from death to life in prison, a white mob lynched Leo Frank in Marietta, Georgia. Today, Leo Frank is widely believed to be innocent of Mary’s murder. The true murderer is believed to be the lead witness for the prosecution. We decided to cover stories that highlight the marginalized populations that were attacked in the recently resurfaced tweets by Taylor Nolan. This week, we focus on the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Danielle tells the story of the murder of Gerlie Alpajora in the Camarines Sur province, located in the Philippines. Gerlie was assassinated because of her advocacy work targeting illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing in the area. Gerlie’s murder also brought light to the disappearance of Keith Davis, both highlighted in the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy. The documentary is about the environmental impact of industrialized fishing directed by and starring Ali Tabrizi. The film features human impacts on marine life and the human rights violations that surround the fishing industry. This is a sneak peek of our April 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive content. You can hear the full episode here. Starting at the $3 level of our Patreon membership! This month we asked our Patreon members what true crime story they wanted us to cover. Our girl, Maria, sent us this case. On April 28, 1996, Martin Bryant committed the worst massacre in modern Australian history (by one person) that impacted Australia forever when he murdered 35 people and injured up to 23 visitors of the Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania. Danielle describes the events of that day and the fundamental and strict gun control laws that led Australia to the end of its mass shooting incidents. Megan wanted to connect one more story to Matt’s season of the Bachelor. This story is based on the fantastic host of After the Final Rose (ATFR), Emmanuel Acho. Emmanuel Acho was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) and played for the Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants. Megan tells the story of the murdered Philadelphia Eagles player, Blenda Gay, who was murdered in 1976 by his wife. CONTENT WARNING: Domestic Violence, brief mention of suicide. This week we are connecting our true crime story to The Bachelor finale and After the Final Rose (ATFR). This season we saw a lot of problematic white women and racism all up and through this franchise. It all ended with Rachael Kirkconnell receiving the final rose and forcing everyone to focus on her racially ignorant ass, rather than the love story we wanted for Matt James. Danielle covers the story of another problematic white woman, Rachel Dolezal. Rachel, also known as NKechi Amare Diallo, was exposed in 2015 after news broke that she was pretending to be black, when she was actually born to two white parents in Montana. The story made national headlines and had the world talking, so we had to tell you about it. This week is fantasy suites! Michelle’s date is a spa date that is themed after Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and Megan wanted to learn more about the Pennsylvania Dutch People, so she does just that. Megan tells the story of the West Nickel Mines School shooting in October 2006. This was the one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where a man walked in and shot five young girls, and injured five more. Although we’ve come to the end of the road … we still need to recap this last episode! This week are again joined by our hilarious lady lawyer friend Kelcee, to talk about all that happened in this 3 hour, Chris Harrisonless, last episode of the season. We see Michelle meet Matt’s family (and listen to Kelcee swoon over John James), the final dates and Matt give the final rose to the last problematic white woman left in the season. Our BIPOC highlight of the week goes to our new hostess with the mostest, Emmanuel Acho! Emmanuel did an amazing job having the difficult conversations about race during ATFR and answering all the questions about Racist Rachael that we needed answers to. If you want to hear more of Kelcee you can catch her on Episode 69, Episode 43 and Episode 19! What a season! Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, for listening to us week after week! As the show is on hiatus, gears up for Katie’s season of the Bachelorette, we will be taking a break as well. We will still be recording true crime stories and releasing those on Thursdays! We also will still have bonus Bachelor content on Patreon! We truly love you, mean it! We also talk about her podcast Little Help for Our Friends and her fascination with serial killer Ted Bundy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/crimeandroses/support
At the Women Tell All, some of the women were fake AF! Fake personalities and crocodile tears. So, Megan tells the story of another faker, Anna Delvey (aka Anna Sorokin). It’s fantasy suites week, and we are joined by our beautifully basic friends, Alex and Loren, from the Basic Bitch Podcast! To start things out, we see Matt have a difficult conversation with his father, who has not been around for most of Matt’s life. We see Michelle’s Pennsylvania Dutch-inspired spa date, Bri’s hiking date, and Rachael’s pottery date. The three fantasy suites definitely are not all on the same level, and Rachael gets a whole house for her suite AND fireworks. The Producers are making their biases known, and known loudly. We hate it. Our BIPOC highlight goes to Bri Springs (of course), we also say goodbye to Bri as well. Bri is the 25-year-old communications manager from San Francisco, California. Bri has been serving us LEWKS all season and left her job to continue on the show. Bri, if Matt didn’t appreciate you, we sure did! Promo: This episode is sponsored by LW Creations. Week 8 of The Bachelor, we saw Rachael Kirkconnell have a skydiving hometown date (that told us nothing about her being from Georgia). Rachael did not have the softest landing, we are glad that she is ok, but think our BIPOC ancestors had a hand in that and we thank them! Danielle covers the 2003 mysterious death in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, of Stephen Hilder. Stephen was a young, but experienced, skydiver that plummeted to his death during a national competition. Stephen’s death was immediately suspicious based on the way his parachute was tampered with. The question still lingers as to whether Stephen’s death was murder or suicide. It’s time for the Women Tell All and we are joined by our amazing friends Liv and Bix, of ITM with Liv and Bix! But, before we can get into any of that, we spend some time addressing the most recent Bachelor Nation controversy, the past tweets of Taylor Nolan. These tweets are incredibly hurtful, disgusting, and harmful to almost every marginalized community that you can think of. We do not read any of the tweets, as many contain slurs and violent language, but we do discuss recent events surrounding them. CONTENT WARNING for this discussion. At the Women Tell All, it’s very much a rehash of the same drama we’ve been talking about all season. We don't even see Victoria get grilled in the hot seat. We also see deleted footage of several group dates and, of course, bloopers! There is a lot of screen time for the man who should be fired, and just a sweet reminder, #FIRECHRISHARRISON. Our POC highlight of the week goes to Khalyah Epps! She is the 28 year old healthcare advocate, from Durham, North Carolina. We loved to see Khaylah back on our screen, as she had dropped some words of wisdom that the ladies and Bachelor Nation needed to hear! Will she be heading to the sandy BIP beach? And in that vein, Megan tells the story of the massacre of 14 women engineering students at École Polytechnique in Montreal, Canada in 1989. Another 10 women and 4 men were injured.
