This is the week that we’re sure many of you have been waiting for. When the idea of “original vs. sequel” comes up one of the biggest examples that comes to mind is one of the first to ever enter the conversation: Star Wars: A New Hope vs. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back. One of the most successful franchises in history and two of the best sci-fi movies will duke it out to see who takes it home this week.  Jeff will argue for the original A New Hope and Steve will get the honor of defending The Empire Strikes Back. Will the revolutionary nature of the original take home the victory? Or will the expansion of the world and journey into a deeper story of The Empire Strikes Back be the one that propels the sequel to victory?  Listen and find out! We’re riding into the danger zone this week! Or do we have the need for speed? Either way, we’re Tom Cruise-running our way into this weeks episode which introduces our first Legacy Sequel of the season as we pit together Top Gun vs. Top Gun Maverick.  Tom Cruise came back to reprise his role as Maverick more than 3 decades after the original. Almost the entire cast and crew around him was switched for the sequel, so does the charm of Tom Cruise win out from the original? Or does the world weary Cruise that we know today take them to victory? Nate will defend the original and Steve will defend Maverick as we take on our first legacy sequel situation. Who will take home the victory? Subscribe and Rate us on Podcast Services! iTunes – Spotify – iHeart – Amazon – RSS Did you like the show? Let us know! Week three is here and we have a good one! After two weeks of the original taking the win, will a sequel finally be able to break through? This week is as good of a chance as any with the epic films of The Terminator and the Terminator 2: Judgment Day. This will be the first week in which there is a clear difference between budget and production values between the first and second movie. As we laid it out in our first episode this season, the argument “the special effects are better because of the bigger budget” is not a viable argument. So how will these bee defended?  To find out, Steve will have the honor of defending the original The Terminator and Jeff will take the defense of the sequel The Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Without the obvious argument of better special effects (especially ones as revolutionary as T2) how will the arguments for the film hold up? Is it still better from a character and story perspective? Or does the ingenuity of the original win out?  Listen and find out! Subscribe and Rate us on Podcast Services! iTunes – Spotify – iHeart – Amazon – RSS Did you like the show? Let us know! After the heaviness of last weeks episode, we take on a little bit lighter duo of films The Father of the Bride and The Father of the Bride Part II. Two hilarious movies starring legends of the silver screen Steve Martin and Diane Keaton.  We have a reversal of last weeks advocators with Nate taking on the original The Father of the Bride and Jeff defending The Father of the Bride Part II. Will the hilarious hijinks of wedding preparation take the cake (pun intended) or will the dual (see what I did there?) bundles of joy in the second get the nod?  Listen and find out which one takes it home. We’re back, baby! Season 4 is upon us! We’ve done director vs. director (twice!). We’ve done doppelganger vs. doppelganger. So what’s next? Original vs. sequel, of course! The long held tradition of arguing whether the first or second movie is better has been co-opted for this season and our NEW title: Deux of the Greats! Our first dual of the Deux is two of not only the greatest movie and sequel of all time, but two of the greatest films of all time period: The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. Jeff takes the reigns of advocating for The Godfather and Nate makes the argument for The Godfather Part II.  Will the original with Marlon Brando’s epic, Acadamy Award winning performance take it home? Or will the expanded universe of the second film take the cake? Listen and find out! Subscribe and Rate us on Podcast Services! iTunes – Spotify – iHeart – Amazon – RSS Did you like the show? Special episode alert! In recognition of the coming series of no less than 7 days in which we celebrate the fish known as sharks we have decided to give a double dose of off-season episodes! And this episode serves dual purposes (see what I did there?). It’s a preview for our S4 topic of “movie vs sequel” and it’s also a commemoration of the Jaws franchise which is celebrating its 50th year! So how did we do all this? Well, we decided the perfect way would be to watch Jaws 3-D AND Jaws the Revenge. BACK-TO-BACK! And we recorded it all! For two episodes we recorded us live, watching both movies. It was…an experience. Feel free to watch along and listen with us! Subscribe and Rate us on Podcast Services! iTunes – Spotify – iHeart – Amazon – RSS Did you like the show? Let us know! It’s the final week! Or is it? The outcome will decide if we have to go an extra week or not. And what could possibly be better than to have two epic crossover movies: Freddy vs. Jason goes up against Alien vs Predator! The history of crossover movies goes way back to at least 1962 when we got our very first Godzilla vs Kong movies. And they all lead to this!  Two of the greatest slasher villains in history go up against two of the greatest monsters in movie history. Which was the better movie? Which crossover handled the premise better? Who will come out victorious in S3?? Listen and find out! Ghosts have always been a fascination of the human mind. What could cause a spirit to linger? What need is there for them to remain with us instead of going to the great beyond? And is it possible to make contact with these spirits and aid them in their passing? The Sixth Sense and Stir of Echoes are two movies that came out a month apart and seek to answer these questions.  Both movies deal with the ability to “see dead people,” but approach it in different ways that reveal different aspects of the human condition. But which one does it better? Is one scarier than the other? Does being scarier make it a better film? All such questions–and more!–answered on our latest episode. Planes can be good fodder for a solid thriller film. Everyone is confined to a tight space. They are in the air. And there’s always the pesky issue if needing somebody to fly the damn things!  All of these factors come into play in this week’s dual/duel where Executive Decision and Air Force One face off! Which movie was the better thriller? Which had better action scenes? Which one had Harrison Ford?? Listen and find out the answer to these questions on this week’s episode! Do you remember what it was like to play baseball as a kid? It was like magic. A game of endless entertainment and dreams. That’s what our two movies this week tap into.  Rookie of the Year is about Henry Rowengartner,a boy who gets injured only to discover this let’s him throw a fastball hard enough to join the Chicago Cubs where he learns about himself, his family, and how maybe he just needs to be a kid.  Little Big League is about young Billy Heywood who gets to inherit a major league baseball team and decides to instill himself as manager. In the process he learns about himself as he tries to operate in an adult world and helps the adults learn a little bit more about themselves.  Which does it better? Which better encapsulates baseball as a child? Which was funnier? Which had the better ending? Listen and find out! Subscribe and Rate us on Podcast Services! Do you want to break free? Wake up? See how far down this rabbit hole goes? Then this is the episode for you. Two men fight for their place in a world they didn’t know wasn’t real in The Matrix and Dark City.  Something was in the air around the time of 1998 and it caused people to wonder if we were gonna be captured by the system or if we could break free. Both movies take this question and approach it from different angles. Which one did it better? Listen this week and find out! Skin that smokewagon! It’s western week here on this season of Dual of the Greats! And of course we have the famous battle of Wyatt Earp vs Tombstone. Both movies tackle the legend of the man himself but in entirely different ways.  Will Wyatt Earps depiction of the titular characters entire life make it the better movie. Or will the narrower focus on the events that happened in Tombstone make Tombstone the winner? Which had the better performances? Which better encapsulated the American West? From the time of “When Harry Met Sally” many rom-coms have tried to figure out whether men and women can be “just friends.” But something was in the air in 2011 that had people wondering if they could be *only* be more than friends? Instead of wondering if a relationship could be had without the physical it’s whether a relationship could be had with only the physical.  This is the question that two movies came along to answer. “No Strings Attached” starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher rivaled “Friends With Benefits” starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. Which movie handled this topic better? Which was a better version of the rom-com? Has either movie become a classic to rival others of the genre? You’ve heard of a pregnant pause, but how about a pregnant nun?? Well, we’ve got two of them this week in our doppelganger movies. These are the most recent movies that we have ever reviewed as both of these movies came out in 2024 and are hardly over a year old but they have made their mark. These movies are the Sydney Sweeney passion project Immaculate and the horror movie prequel The First Omen.  Both movies take place in a convent where something isn’t quite as it seems. And both movies have one of the chosen nuns that are the unfortunate ones to figure out exactly what it is that is going on…and it ain’t pretty. Which movie tackles this unique topic better? Which one has a better performance from their lead character? Which one tackles it’s themes better? Listen and find out! The Dual of the Greats marches up the hill hoorah, hoorah! This week we take on our first ever animated movies in AntZ and A Bug’s Life. Both movies came out in the year 1998 (somebody needs to really look into the 97-98 period and all the doppelganger movies) and feature a plot of an ant colony that has to protect itself from external threats attempting to steal their resources. It’s there first ever  AntZ was one of the first major Deamworks productions that solidified them as a competitor to Pixar. Before Shrek, before Kung Fu Panda, before How to Train Your Dragon, there was AntZ and it’s star-studded cast. But it goes up against the mighty Titan that is Pixar. Even back in 1998 they were young but had solidified their position as the leaders in CGI animation. Which one will get the nod? Listen and find out this week! Season 3 continues with our second set of doppelganger movies. This week we have the Pierce Brosnan vehicle Dante’s Peak facing off against the Tommy Lee Jones lead Volcano. Both movies came out in the early part of 1997 and featured dormant volcanoes that became active and threatened people in various locales. In Volcano, Tommy Lee Jones is aided by Anne Heche as he tries to save the city of Los Angeles from molten lava. Meanwhile, Linda Hamilton assists Pierce Brosnan as they both try to save the small town of Dante’s Peak from the volcano it built underneath. Who decided to build a town there? We’ll never know, but we WILL know which is the better movie after they face off this week. Listen to find out which one takes it home.
