Description

EarBuds Podcast Collective is a listening movement. We send a weekly podcast recommendation email that contains a theme and 5 podcast episodes on that theme. The best part is that each week is curated by a different person -- and anyone can curate!

This podcast will highlight each week's podcast picks, information about the curator, and more. We'll also share podcast tips, industry news, and bonus recommendations from time to time.

EarBuds Podcast Collective was created in February 2017. The founder is Arielle Nissenblatt. The editor of the newsletter is Abby Klionsky.

We have created a vast online community, accessible through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

This podcast is meant to make EarBuds more accessible and to turn more people on to amazing podcasts and the people that are listening to them.

Black lives matter and we will continue to amplify BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color) voices in podcasting. Welcome to episode 44. It covers the week of August 3 - 7, 2020.This week’s theme is: *Food: Power, History, Politics.* The curator is Ari Moskowitz.Thank you to the Beyond 6 Seconds Podcast for sponsoring this week’s episode and newsletter. Find out more about Beyond 6 Seconds here: http://www.beyond6seconds.com/More on this podcast:Each week on this podcast, we’ll share the information that's within the newsletter put out by EarBuds Podcast Collective. EBPC is a listening movement. We send a weekly email with a theme and 5 podcast episodes on that theme, and each week is curated by a different person. Anyone can curate a list -- just reach out! Here are the episodes chosen by Ari this week: .Point of OriginThird Culture53 minutes This is Whetstone magazine's podcast and it is amazing! It's the best food podcast in existence. I'd recommend all of of the episodes, but this one is so cool because it talks about diasporic foodways. How do an Indonesian and Taiwanese couple think about their culture in the context of their lives and bakery in LA? How did curry get to Japan? If you like this episode, I'd also recommend "Earthenware Cooking: Japan | Greece" and "Indigenous Foodways: The Decolonized Diet." Emergence Magazine PodcastPickled Limes - Kalyanee Mam31 minutesThis podcast has authors reading their own articles from the magazine. The magazine explores the threads connecting ecology, culture, and spirituality, so they talk about food a lot. This article is a harrowing and inspiring story about the civil war in Cambodia and immigrating to the US. It includes a recipe in the print version and epitomizes to me how food can be used as a vehicle in a story.Milk Street RadioThe Sporkful Presents: Why Hibachi is Complicated30 minutes Wonton soup has been in America longer than the hot dog!!! I learned this fact on this episode and I have repeated it to everyone that will listen. This podcast is a generally great resource for interviews with important people in food and to get cooking tips. Monocle 24: The Menu Eating Fish, Nose to Tail30 minutes The host on this podcast has an UNBELIEVABLY smooth voice. Insane. Listen just for the voice. The episode is a great interview with the author of "The Fish Butchery Cookbook," and ends with an overview of climate changes' impact on wine regions. They also have a Food Neighbourhoods series where they explore different food neighborhoods (Brits!) from around the world in 5-10 minutes miniepisodes. I'd recommend starting with "Food Neighbourhoods: best of 2019" which includes two of my favorites: Bagdad and Turin. The Food Tech Show with Michael Wolf Talking Food Tech and Racial Injustice with Journey Foods' Riana Lynn58 minutes Nice recent episode about food, tech, and race. Very contemporary and relevant to today's food/tech industry.Thank you to the Beyond 6 Seconds podcast: The Beyond 6 Seconds podcast goes beyond our six-second first impressions to share the extraordinary stories of everyday people. Host Carolyn Kiel (pronounced “Keel”) interviews leaders from all walks of life, including entrepreneurs, CEOs, and media personalities, about how they’ve developed their careers and overcome big challenges along the way. If you’re looking for candid, real stories about how people just like you and me overcome obstacles to achieve great things, then this podcast is for you! First and foremost, Black lives matter. This has always been the case but it took us until now to post it here and we will do better. At Earbuds we work hard to ensure that our newsletter is filled with podcast recommendations that include episodes produced and hosted by women and POC. The newsletter is curated by a different person each week, who sends us their theme and 5 podcast episode links. If we find that the list contains all white men, we reply asking for a more diverse selection. Sometimes, we fall short. Sometimes curators don't reply and we give up. We won't do that anymore. We’re holding ourselves accountable and you can, too. As a white woman, I am reading, listening, and donating to funds and organizations that center and support black lives and work to fight racism. And I'm learning a lot. I will continue to do so. It's on all of us to see to it that real change comes from this movement. -Arielle NissenblattWelcome to episode 36. Here's the description: In August of 1619, a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia. America was not yet America, but this was the moment it began. No aspect of the country that would be formed here has been untouched by the 250 years of slavery that followed. Anyone can curate a list -- just reach out!We partner with Inside Podcasting to bring you the week’s top podcast news stories. Written by Skye Pillsbury, Inside Podcasting is a thrice weekly email newsletter that covers the podcast world. Here’s why Ari chose this theme:They say graduating college is simply the beginning, not the end. As a young adult, in my mid-twenties, I have been trying to find ways to continue education myself, beyond my daily routine. I have found that being a lifelong learner allows me to explore new ideas, have better conversations, and most importantly, understand myself. Here are the episodes Ari chose: MONDAY: On Purpose with Jay Shetty - How To Release Your Toxic Beliefs & Getting Back To Your Higher Nature - 63 minutes Jay Shetty interviews leadership coach Robin Sharma on his new book, The 5AM Club. In addition to explaining his 20-20-20 formula on how to structure your morning for optimal daily productivity, he also introduces concepts about freeing yourself from distractions, the nature of the mind, and tapping into your primal genius. Learning can also get you into the flow state, which triggers the release of dopamine in your brain and helps you deal with stress and anxiety. TUESDAY: Knowable - Learn to Learn - 5 hour course Hosted by a team of behavioral psychologists, memory champions, polyglots, and masterminds explains their proven strategies and teaches you how to learn better. I particularly enjoyed hearing from Yanjaa Wintersoul, a Mongolian 3x memory champion. You can listen to this course for free on Knowable! WEDNESDAY: Knowable - Speak with Confidence - 7 hour course Hosted by master communicators (including the 2019 world champion), speechwriters, and vocal coaches (including a longtime NPR voice coach), this course teaches you how to speak in any setting, from presenting to clients, to giving a wedding toast, to schmoozing at dinner parties. Knowable is giving Earbuds readers an exclusive coupon code to access this course for free! Redeem the course by using the code earbuds on their website today. THURSDAY: The Ground Up Show - Morning Routine - 60 minutes Josh Janssen from The Daily Talk Show joins Matt D’Avella to discuss waking up early, morning routines & why we care how others start their day. FRIDAY: A Tribe Called Yes - 4 Degrees of Separation - 23 minutes In this episode, host Daron K Roberts interviews me about how I traveled from LA to NY relying solely on connections made via social media. This was a profound experience and the first time that I began to truly believe the idea that you can learn something incredibly unique and fascinating from anyone. I wanted to share this because it was the first time that I began to be a lifelong learner. Most of these episode recommendations are available on Podchaser, Castbox, and wherever else you get your podcasts! Here’s Ari’s Self Promo:I recently joined a company called Knowable, a platform for screen-free, audio-first courses led by experts. I was attracted to this company because I often found myself enjoying the format of podcasts, but didn't feel like I was receiving the knowledge like from an audiobook. Knowable is the perfect medium, a great way to learn a new skill on the go, while keeping my engaged and interested. Follow Knowable on Twitter and Instagram. Written by Skye Pillsbury, Inside Podcasting is a thrice weekly email newsletter that covers the podcast world. Here’s why Sue chose this theme:We can all achieve amazing things in our lives, yet we often limit ourselves. By listening to real-life stories of others, it connects us to new possibilities and to think “maybe I could?" Whilst they may be from different countries, backgrounds, generations, cultures etc. they are also human beings who have energy, passion and enthusiasm. That way we can broaden our perspectives and appreciate difference, rather than fearing it.Here's Sue’s CROWDSOURCING QUESTION:How do we use the current coronavirus situation to have more meaningful virtual conversations with others? In this episode, we introduce you to Matt Swedo, our theme music composer. He shares a bit about himself and how he got involved with EarBuds.Use this hashtag to discuss this theme online with us: #RoleModelsThis episode was written and produced by Arielle Nissenblatt, who also hosts the show. Special thanks to Daniel Tureck who mixes and masters Feedback with EarBuds. Abby Klionsky edits our newsletter, which can be found at earbudspodcastcollective.org. Thank you to Matthew Swedo for composing our music. Find him and ask him all about your music needs. He’s at @matthewswedo on Instagram and www.matthewswedomusic.com online.
