He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. And go quickly and tell his disciples that He has risen from the dead. Matthew 28:6-7It is now Sunday, the final day of Passion Week. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary had come to the tomb at dawn. They came to care for the dead body of Jesus by anointing it with spices. When they arrived, an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the stone. They also noticed the guards were shaking in fear as they saw the angel sitting on the stone. Finally, the angel announced Jesus was no longer in the tomb but had risen from the dead just as He said.
Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go, make it secure as you know how." And they went and made the tomb secure with the guard, sealing the stone. Matthew 27:65-66On Saturday of the Passion Week, Jesus' dead body was lying in a borrowed tomb. Following His death on Friday Joseph of Arimathea, who had become a disciple of Jesus, asked Pilate if he could take the body of Jesus to bury it. Joseph was a wealthy man, so he already had a new tomb prepared that had been cut out in the rock. When he was permitted to take Jesus' body, he wrapped the body in a clean linen cloth and laid it in the tomb. Then, he rolled a large stone against the entrance of it and departed.
And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him.  Luke 23:33Now it is Friday of the Passion Week, the day Jesus would be crucified and then buried. After multiple trials, Jesus went through severe scourging. The Roman soldiers were experts in this horrific experience and knew how close they could take the human body before death occurred. We do not know the specifics about Jesus' scourging, but the standard practice left the body somewhat mutilated, bruised, and gushing with blood. Then, they covered Jesus' body with a robe and plunged a crown of thorns into His head. Then, He was led away to be crucified.
“My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will."Matthew 26:39The events accelerated exponentially on Thursday of the Passion Week, before Jesus would be crucified on Friday. Rising from the meal, Jesus washed the feet of the twelve disciples, giving them a new commandment to love one another. As The Last Supper Passover meal was occurring, Jesus also gave new meaning to the bread and the wine. As the sacrificial lamb of God who would soon die for the sins of the world, Jesus said the bread represents His body which would be given for all; and the wine represents His blood of the covenant, which He is pouring out for the forgiveness of all sin.
And one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?" And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver. Matthew 26:14-16On Wednesday of the Passion Week, before Jesus would be crucified on Friday, some refer to it as silent Wednesday. They did so because they believe the Scriptures did not record any of Jesus' personal activities on this day. For clarity, there is no one account in the gospels that states the specific chronological sequence of this week. Therefore, there will be variances relating to some events on any timeline of Passion Week. What we do know about Wednesday is that others were busy plotting to arrest Jesus to kill him.
'Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"Matthew 24:3On Tuesday of the Passion Week, before Jesus would be crucified on Friday, Jesus' day was full of many experiences, which you can read about in Matthew 21:18 through Matthew 26:13. Early Tuesday morning on His way to the temple, He taught His disciples about the need for faith; and in the temple, He was challenged in continual debate by the chief priests, the Pharisees, and the Sadducees.  Before exposing their hypocrisy and departing for the Mount of Olives, Jesus made clear to the religious leaders that the whole Law and the prophets hang on the two foremost commandments, to love God and love your neighbor.
And He said to them, "It is written: 'MY HOUSE WILL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER'; but you are making it a DEN OF ROBBERS."Matthew 21:13On Monday of what we call the Passion Week before Jesus would be crucified on Friday, Jesus entered the temple to drive out those selling and buying on the temple grounds. He also turned over the table of the money changers. With great courage, Jesus' strong leadership refused to let the temple be turned into something that was not His Father's desire. Quoting Isaiah 56:7, he proclaimed, "My house will be called a house of prayer." But Jesus found this was not so. If Jesus came to your church today, would He find your church to be a house of prayer?  Today, the church should also be called a house of prayer for all the nations. If Jesus came to your church today, would He find your church to be a house of prayer for all the nations?
On Palm Sunday, before Jesus was crucified on Friday and the resurrection of His body would occur on Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem to begin what we call Passion Week. As a servant leader, He rode into the city on a donkey. The people spread their cloaks, which were long outer garments, and cut branches from the trees covering the road in honor of Him.The crowds were shouting the words from the Bible text today: "Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS THE ONE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!" (Matthew 21:9)
