This is an edited version of an earlier episode.Becoming a parent is really hard. And part of what makes it hard is the unrealistic narrative about what parenthood should feel like. In this episode, Dr. Becky has a real, say-it-how-it-is discussion about parenthood with one of her favorite new friends, Myleik Teele. While no podcast episode can single-handedly make parenthood any easier, this one will help you feel less alone in all the tricky moments that are sure to come.Join Good Inside Membership: https://bit.ly/3cqgG2AFollow Dr. Becky on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drbeckyatgoodinsideSign up for our weekly email, Good Insider: https://www.goodinside.com/newsletterOrder Dr. Becky's book, Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be, at goodinside.com/book or wherever you order your books.Today’s episode is brought to you by the following sponsor: Frida Baby’s All-In-One Potty Kit has everything you need for a successful potty process — including exclusive tips from Dr. Becky. One day, your two year old loves taking a bath. They love playing with bubbles and bringing in all of their different toys. And then all of sudden... they *hate* the bath. No amount of encouragement or cajoling will get them in the tub. What's going on here? On today's episode, Dr. Becky talks with parents of a toddler about navigating the (very common) bathtime resistance phase and how it relates to another part of toddlerhood. Meltdowns.... they seem to always happen at the absolute wrong time or worse yet in the most public of ways. Whether it's too much sugar, not enough sleep, or just a phase doesn't really matter when we as parents are just trying to get from point A to point B. Dr. Becky talks to a father of two young girls who remembers the lessons of his childhood, a time when there were things to cry about and not getting exactly what you wanted was not one of them. So how can he do it differently and not feel so triggered by his daughter's behavior? Whether it's a soccer team, piano lessons or sleep-away camp the decision to let your child just "quit" can be tough choice to make.  You question - did you do the right thing?  Should you have pushed them to stick it out?  Will this be an indicator of how the rest of their life is going to go?   Deep breath, we are all in this together.  In this episode, Dr. Becky talks it through with a mom who is questioning herself.  Is it more important to have them stick to their commitments or better to prioritize our relationship with them? Join Good Inside Membership: https://bit.ly/3cqgG2AFollow Dr. Becky on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drbeckyatgoodinsideSign up for our weekly email, Good Insider: https://www.goodinside.com/newsletterOrder Dr. Becky's book, Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be, at goodinside.com/book or wherever you order your books. Today’s episode is brought to you by the following sponsor:Outschool’s online learning platform has over 150,000 live interactive classes—it’s the perfect way to keep your kids engaged in learning and fun as they transition from summer back to school. What is it about car trips that are so triggering to us as parents? Is it the bathroom break just minutes into the drive? The need to pack every toy in the house? Or the ever-present threat of traffic? (If only we had left 10 minutes earlier!) You’re a good parent if you drink coffee while pregnant. You’re a good parent if you don’t breastfeed. You’re a good parent if you drag your kid to soccer practice… and then let them quit the team mid-season. This week’s podcast guest, award-winning economist Emily Oster, isn’t saying these things to make you feel better. She’s got the data to back it up. Frustrated by all of the “rules” she encountered as a mom-to-be, she researched popular parenting advice and discovered just how much of it is misguided or flat-out wrong. As Dr. Becky and Emily discuss her most surprising discoveries over the years, they demonstrate the power of data to deshame our parenting choices. You’ll leave the episode with your own version of, “I’m a good parent who _______.” For more information, subscribe to Emily’s newsletter ParentData on https://www.parentdata.org/ and check out her three books: “Expecting Better,” “Cribsheet,” and “The Family Firm.” Join Good Inside Membership: https://bit.ly/3cqgG2A Follow Dr. Becky on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drbeckyatgoodinside Sign up for our weekly email, Good Insider: https://www.goodinside.com/newsletter Pre-order Dr. Becky's upcoming book, Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be, at goodinside.com/book or wherever you order your books.
Independent play isn’t just for our kids. It’s for us, too. Let’s be real: We all need a break from 24/7 caregiving to show up as the parents we want to be. But how do you actually help kids feel comfortable and confident playing alone—not to mention reduce your own guilt about not joining in? Lizzie Assa, the play expert behind the Workspace for Children, joins Dr. Becky on the podcast this week to discuss all things independent play. The two reframe what independent play means and explain why it looks different for every kid. Then, they model simple, actionable strategies to turn “quiet time” into a reality in your home (yes, really). You’ll end the episode with tons of creative ideas for building your child’s independence and a deeper understanding of your own relationship to imagination, too. such a great episode! I love the practical strategies. I keep telling everyone "Yes! sharing IS caring, but caring is NOT only sharing! we can care in other ways!" but I really would like to have a child who is compassionate and can play nicely with her / his friends.

I loved this episode. I listened to it once before but decided to listen again given all that's going on and it resonates so well. I lost my grandfather when I was 5. He passed away in his sleep. For years after that I had trouble sleeping because I was worried I'd wake up to see my parents and loved ones are dead. I still am anxious about this! but learnt to live with it. I am glad I'm equipped to discuss this hard topic with my kids when they start asking questions. Thank you once again Dr. Becky.

What we do with our kids is teach them firearm safety with nerf guns. Keep the finger off the trigger, never point at a person, act as if the gun is alwaysloaded, real guns are for catching food and protecting. Aslo, of course don't touch. Real guns are for killing. We live in the foothills so it may be different for us. idk. I think our kids will fear what we fear.
