Each season, co-hosts Justin Gerber, Dan Caffrey, McKenzie Gerber, Rachel Reeves, and Michael Roffman slice and dice through one iconic series one movie at a time. In the past, they've covered Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Scream, The Evil Dead, and Chucky. This year? The Alien franchise. Strange Darling hits theaters this weekend -- and it's a good one. The latest export from writer-filmmaker J.T. Mollner shuffles an athletic cat-and-mouse story between stars Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner that feels both in and out of time. It's gritty, it's unpredictable, and it's paralyzing, doling out the narrative like a descendent of Tarantino's style.
But this isn't an homage; it's an extension on familiar forms. Today, Halloweenies co-host and executive producer Michael Roffman speaks with the maestro behind the madness to discuss his own filmmaking DNA and how he's been carving his own signature. They also shoot the shit on favorite Westerns and why that genre may be a prism for filmmaking.
