Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer Foreign Minister Anand's recent diplomatic mission to China and what it signals about Canada's evolving relationship with Beijing. They question whether this represents genuine policy triangulation amid U.S.-Canada trade tensions or a concerning normalization of ties with a regime that has imprisoned Canadian citizens, engaged in foreign interference, and imposed punitive tariffs on Canadian canola exports. In the back half of the show, they discuss the emergence of a new meritocratic elite around the Carney government who combine genuine professional achievements with a sense of entitlement and distance from ordinary Canadians. They argue that this emerging elite risks creating dangerous blind spots in governance and could fuel the kind of populist backlash as seen elsewhere in the democratic world. Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer analyze the major blow to Canada's automotive sector as Stellantis moves Jeep production from Brampton, Ontario to Illinois, despite $15 billion in government subsidies for electric vehicle battery manufacturing. Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney argues that both B.C. Premier David Eby and federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson appear to have forgotten which jurisdiction interprovincial pipelines fall under. He says the Constitution is clear that such projects are a matter of federal authority—a principle reaffirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada. Kenney adds that Mark Carney’s “build, baby, build” promise will be tested by how his government handles Alberta’s latest push to get a new pipeline built. Toronto is a “world class city” says its mayor Olivia Chow. But for a growing number of its residents, the city is unrecognizable from decades ago; whether it’s the homelessness, open drug use, empty storefronts, or crumbling infrastructure. One year from a pivotal municipal election, Harrison Lowman speaks to Daniel Tate, executive director of IntegrityTO, a civic advocacy group bent on promoting transparent and responsible municipal governance in Canada’s largest city.   The Hub is Canada’s fastest growing independent digital news outlet.   Subscribe to The Hub’s podcast feed to get our best content when you are on the go:  https://tinyurl.com/3a7zpd7e (Apple) https://tinyurl.com/y8akmfn7 (Spotify)  Want more Hub? Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss Statistics Canada's latest employment data including high levels of youth unemployment and what it tells us about generational dynamics in Canada's economy and their political implications. On the back half of the show, they discuss Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's proposed West Coast pipeline and the Carney government's reluctance to champion the project. They argue that Canada needs east-west energy infrastructure to access global markets and higher oil prices, rather than defaulting to north-south pipelines that deepen economic dependence on the United States and contribute to a price discount. In this episode of Hub Politics, Sean Speer, along with Amanda Galbraith, principal at Oyster Group, and David Coletto, founder and CEO of Abacus Data, discuss Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent trip to Washington. They examine his diplomatic approach with President Trump, including his public flattery and the communication challenges this creates. They also discuss whether Canadians will accept the necessary compromises in trade negotiations despite Carney's previous "elbows up" campaign rhetoric. They also explore the emerging NDP leadership race, particularly Rob Ashton's working-class candidacy, and the growing significance of generational politics; how age-based divisions over housing, wealth accumulation, and economic opportunity may reshape Canadian political dynamics in the coming years. On Wednesday night, The Hub hosted its last pub night in its cross-country tour at Afterlight in Ottawa, ON. Co-founders Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the challenges and opportunities facing independent media in Canada, how government subsidies have fundamentally altered the Canadian media landscape, and the difficulties of building a subscription-based news business in Canada, compared to the U.S. They also address the rise of AI-driven news consumption and the growing influence of radical voices in Canadian political podcasting, emphasizing The Hub's commitment to substantive commentary over culture war content. They then engaged in a lively Q&A with The Hub community. Ron Butler, founder of Butler Mortgage, discusses Canada's struggling condo market, the trend of developers selling unsold units in bulk to financial firms to avoid distress, and why this fails to stabilize market prices. He ultimately argues that an oversupply of new rental towers and high municipal fees ensure continued price declines, with no new condo construction starts on the horizon due to unworkable economics. I really enjoy the Roundtable. Interesting that you talked about radical tax reform and Davos in the same episode. You be interested to know that the tax revenue in Switzerland is 30% federal, 40% Cantona (provincial) and 30% municipal. A change to a similar system in Canada would be a game changer! Also the Swiss (universal) Healthcare system is worth looking at....but that's for another day
