The offense exploded early with a 5-run 1st inning, Jackson Merrill drove in 3 runs with a pair of doubles, Manny Machado homered and had 2 RBI’s, and the San Diego Padres jumped on the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-2, finishing off the 3-game sweep to end the regular season with 90 wins (including 7 of their last 8 games) and surge into their NL Wild Card Series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field with huge momentum. Machado singled in Fernando Tatis Jr., who had singled, to start the rally against D’Backs’ starter Brandon Pfaddt. ( L, 13-9) Merrill and Xander Bogaerts (2-run) hit back-to-back doubles to score Ryan O’Hearn, who had singled, Manny & Jackson, making it 4-0. Jake Cronenworth’s sacrifice fly scored Bogaerts to make it 5-0. The Pads had another big inning in the 5th, and another in the 7th. In the 5th, they scored 3 runs on Merrill’s 2-run double that knocked in Bryce Johnson and O’Hearn, and Gavin Sheets’ fielder’s choice groundout that scored Will Wagner to make it 9-2. Jose Iglesias’ 2-run double sent Sheets and Jake Cronenworth after Cronenworth singled in Merrill, who had walked. Arizona scored their 2nd run in the 3rd on an RBI groundout off the bat of Tim Tawa. The Pads got that run right back on Manny’s solo homer in the 3rd to make it 6-2. Merrill- who took 2 separate trips to the injured list in what has been an up and down season- drove in 3 runs & scored 2. The 5-tool CF has been red-hot to close out the season, also playing tremendous defense. Machado went 2-2 with a home run and a single, driving in 2 runs & also scoring 2x before Manager Mike Shildt took him out for PH Will Wagner to rest for the playoffs. Manny had been struggling at the plate for the last 2 months after a Bogaerts, who ripped that 2-runs double in the 1st after homering yesterday,  has also been hot lately. His defense at shortstop has been all-world, all-season. Fernando Tatis Jr. went 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI before Johnson hit for him. Sears (2-2) went 5 2/3 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits, striking out 4 and walking 3. The lefty came over from Oakland with reliever Mason Miller at the trade deadline.
