Vibrators

2021-11-3050:4912

It's a sexual health episode! This week, Mike and Aubrey dive into the hotly debated medical history of vibrators and ask: who fact-checks the fact-checkers? Note: A previous version of this episode included language that referred to “the female downstairs,” implying both that gender is linked to genitals (it isn’t) and that vibrators were used primarily by cis women (they weren’t). We love our trans listeners and we don’t want to do anything that makes them feel excluded, so we’ve removed the sections where that language appeared. While I totally agree with the hosts in that the calorie labels on menus are at best worthless and at worst harmful, learning the 8 year time frame for the national law to these labels in restaurants nationally gave me a cynical giggle because I was working at a pizza joint at the very end of that time frame when my company finally got those new menus put up.

I happened to have a copy and (at least in my copy, copyright 2006) the passage they're talking about is not in chapter 1, it's in chapter 6, but is otherwise quoted accurately. Pollan's notes list his sources, and not all the sources Michael discusses are in there; however, it is also not clear from the notes which source each of Pollan's statistics is from or where Pollan's sources got their statistics.
