Paul reads allegations by the Federal Trade Commission about the business practices of BetterHelp and how they allegedly misused customer's private information. Based on these allegations (BetterHelp denies any wrongdoing and settled with the FTC for $7.8 million), Paul explains his decision to end his endorsement deal with them. Due to the financial cost to edit out past ads for BetterHelp (from over 380 episodes) this mini-episode is to inform listeners that even though all those ad reads still exist in past episodes he has walked away from his relationship with them.  To read the FTC complaint visit their website. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/2023169betterhelpcomplaintfinal.pdf See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Elyse Cizek is a writer and a musician who opens up about her journey of self-reflection and change, what it’s been like living with BPD, and how she manages relationships in her life given her diagnosis. She also shares a number of incredible self-soothing tactics that have helped her along the way. More About Elyse:https://zora.medium.com/dear-white-friends-335d6088077https://elysecizek.medium.com/cancel-culture-isnt-real-4d2b62b47a9dhttps://tr.ee/FaBAW-U5lPhttps://linktr.ee/elysecizek?utm_source=linktree_profile_share&ltsid=ff2aafcf-ed3c-4dcc-96b0-b0f6624d436dElyse’s Tips To Self-Soothe1. Recognize that I am dysregulated. Stepping outside and observing how I’m feeling helps me to separate the feelings/fear from reality and allow myself to feel them, but without the urgency to act.2. Talk to myself. Out loud. “Hey, I’m here. You’re ok. You’re safe.” Saying things like this, wrapping my arms around myself, kissing my shoulders, rubbing my cheeks…I can be angry, sad, overwhelmed, but I get to do it in the safe embrace of myself.3. Ask myself what I need. Again. Out loud. Do I need a glass of water? To go outside? Something to eat? The process of cooking or preparing food, filling a glass of water, etc, is excellent in these times. I cry while I do it. I scream. I lay on the floor if I need to, then get back up. 4. Do something with my hands. Wash a dish, write something down, sweep my floors, take my dog outside, again-preparing food. All of it helps keep my brain preoccupied. 5. Call someone. Anyone. Talk to a human being. About anything. If I’m not at home:All of these work but if I’m in public (like a gym or a movie theater) and a panic attack comes on, I go outside. The self-soothing of embracing myself and talking to myself is still a major first step. Who cares who’s watching?! Besides that, I will run around the block or call a friend.WAYS TO HELP THE MIHH PODCASTSubscribe via iTunes and leave a review. It costs nothing. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/mental-illness-happy-hour/id427377900?mt=2Spread the word via social media.  It costs nothing. Our website is www.mentalpod.com our FB is www.Facebook.com/mentalpod and our Twitter and Instagram are both @Mentalpod Become a much-needed Patreon monthly-donor (with occasional rewards) for as little as $1/month at www.Patreon.com/mentalpod  Become a one-time or monthly donor via PayPal at https://mentalpod.com/donateYou can also donate via Zelle (make payment to mentalpod@gmail.com) To donate via Venmo make payment to @Mentalpod Try Our Sponsor’s Products/ServicesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
40 minutes of some of the darkest surveys listeners have ever filled out. No guest. No interview. No theme music. A few have been read on-air previously but the majority have never been read because Paul felt they were too heavy to put in the show. Well episode #666 is an exemption. We doubt anyone will make it thru all 40 minutes but why not give it a shot? There are four of us siblings left. We lost our mom to an absolutely traumatic battle with cancer in 2017.. we have all struggle with addiction, some of us have gotten clean and some of us haven't... but we are all falling apart.

This podcast has literally saved my life while going through a huge depression. I binge this when ever I’m feeling alone and fantasize about what I would say if I was talking to Paul. This podcast has helped me understand my own problems and family problems and imagine the light at the end of my depression when going through it. I highly recommend it and want to send a virtual hug to anyone suffering from mental health problems.

Omg!!! Look up boys town! My jaw dropped when she said that. Thank you for having an native on. It's so heartbreaking. My dad is native and a second generation orphan. He never knew how to be a dad because he and both of his parents didn't... it's not an excuse but it helps to understand the word more and understand ones survival.

Huge trigger warning for food moralizing, body shaming and talk of people "eating themselves to death". Comparison of disordered eating (and eating at all) to a drug habit. Assertion that it would be better to be addicted to drugs than to be fat. These are all incredibly unhealthy and untrue opinions bolstered by the diet industry, medical fatphobia and body shame but are presented as fact and can be incredibly damaging to hear. So disappointed to hear it in a podcast i love so dearly.
