Description

An overweight, 61-year-old retiree, with zero hiking experience, decided to hike the entire 2,185.3 mile length of the Appalachian Trail in 2014. What could possibly go wrong? As his brother, Mike, commented, "It's a bit like taking up boxing and fighting Mike Tyson in your first bout." Join Steve and his guests as they discuss all aspects of the trail, from gear to Lyme Disease, then back to trail magic and injury.

Sandra Katerina Schmelzer Alvarez, or Peaches, completed her Appalachian Trail thru-hike last month. She is a single mother who managed her autistic son’s reaction to her hike by preparing him for a year before she left. The hike allowed her to see herself as not just a mother, embracing the hiking community and returning home to her son, Nico, with a new perspective on life and motherhood. You can follow Sandra and see plenty of her thru-hike photographs on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/share/1B7SHgqvAN/?mibextid=wwXIfr. Additionally, check out the MeetUp she referred to for backpacking trips and tuition at Beginner Backpacking Clinic – Max Patch to Roaring Fork Shelter - BP 101, Sat, Sep 20, 2025, 9:00 AM | Meetup. Beth and Andrew are closing in on Katahdin but, as you can see below, they don’t get wonderful views everyday. They are down to the last 150 miles, relishing each moment. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I’ve been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don’t forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you’ll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out. I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I’m sure several of you say, “I could do that. I’ve got an awesome story to tell.” You’re the person we need to hear from. Roxanne Strine completed her Appalachian Trail thru-hike just a few weeks ago, at the sprightly young age of 70. She proved her mettle after her original plans fell through at the last minute, deciding to modify those plans and just go for it. On the way, Roxanne discovered an inner strength that she always knew was there, from her time in her 30s as a professional kickboxer!! Failure was truly not an option for Roxanne, even after getting lost in Maine and having to push the alarm button on her Garmin InReach. She worked out what worked for her and stuck with that plan until the end. Her hike could serve as a template for others thinking that the physicality would be too much for them. Also this week, Andrew and Beth reached Maine and the Mahoosuc Notch. The end is in sight. Darrell Eck, or Old Stag, is this week’s main guest. Darrell retired as a teacher in 2022 and fulfilled his dream of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. He had kept a picture of the AT behind him in his classroom, so the completion must have been sweet indeed. On the way, Darrell helped rescue a woman lost on trail leading her out when she had found herself turned around. He also discovered the precise height of a tree branch when he walked into it!! Surprisingly, Darrell hasn’t set foot back on any trail since he finished, though I know our conversation sparked a renewed interest, so watch this space. With Dave finished, Beth and Andrew are our surviving Mighty Blue Class of 2025 members. As luck would have it, with Beth and Andrew in Gorham, NH, Dave and his wife, Jeannie, were visiting Gorham last Monday to visit with two of Dave’s previous hiking partners, Sad Soup and Ahoy. They all met up and shared a great evening together, as you can see below. Mike Wetherhold, who was in the running to be part of the Mighty Blue Class of 2025, is our guest today. Mike went ahead and started the Appalachian Trail at the end of February, and finished mid-July. As you’ll hear, he is a resilient kind of guy. Mike also had a serious purpose to his hike, raising a considerable sum for ALS research in honor of his Uncle Jay, who died from the disease. He felt Uncle Jay’s presence throughout his hike. If this resonates with you, please support his efforts at this link.https://projectals.donorsupport.co/page/mikehikestheat You can also follow along with Mike’s hike through his Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/mikehikestheat/ Two days ago, on August 19, Dave Santi, one of our Mighty Blue Class of 2025 members, finally reached the summit of Mt Katahdin with his Over the Hill Gang, with all seven members at the top together. He had glorious weather for the summit, as these joyous pictures show. Our other Class members, Beth and Andrew, are now well into New Hampshire and experiencing the Whites. They sent me this picture at the top of Mt Moosilauke. They’re loving it. Our guest today is Mike Innes, or Bobcat, who hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2007, just before the explosion of technological marvels that help hikers these days. It was also the era when lightweight gear was about to become an obsession, so it was interesting to speak with Mike about his experience. Mike hiked with his dog, Romeo, for part of the way, and Romeo even acquired the delicious trail name of Swamp Monster. You can follow Mike on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mountainmike2007?igsh=MW02ZnRpeXYxcnZmOQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr , and on his YouTube channel at https://youtube.com/@mikeinnes9053?si=1wqNRrG-p5XMZHcF Our Class of 2025 are nearing Katahdin, with Dave just about to enter the 100 Mile Wilderness, so he is in his last week. Here are the Gang at Shaw’s. Menawhile, Beth and Andrew have crossed the Connecticut River in New Hampshire and just a few days shy of the Whites. Great times, though I didn’t get an extra picture this week. We also spoke with Bruce Matson about the Woods Hole Weekend, which is coming up in September. If you’d like to join us, spaces are VERY limited right now, so call 540-921-3444 as soon as you can if you’d like to join us. Any questions about the weekend can be answered by Bruce, who is at rtkchallenge@gmail.com You can check out the details of the weekend at the Woods Hole website at https://woodsholehostel.com/things-to-do/the-woods-hole-weekend/ . I hope to see some of you there. This interview was four years in the making, with Maddie Boehm our main guest, four years after we first made contact. It was worth the wait, as Maddie talks about her somewhat tricky start with backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. She was badly under-prepared for what she would face, but her resilience and her ability to learn from her mistakes were what pushed her through. Along the way, she discovered something within her that had eluded her for much of her life. Maddie talks about plus-size girls, hoping that her own stories will inspire others who may doubt that they have it within them to undertake a long distance hike. Her answer is that, yes, you can. You can follow Maddie on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/rescueroamingthewild/ We catch up again with Beth and Andrew, who have reached their twelfth state, and are finding community both on and off trail. They had dinner with Betty and her husband Bruce. Meanwhile, Dave is within two weeks of Katahdin and pushing through Maine. Here, he is at the 2,000-mile marker. Welcome to episode 500 of the Mighty Blue podcast, with Jessica Hawkins, or Dixie, as our main guest. Jessica has been a guest several times before, but in this conversation, we focus on recent life events and her hiking within a family structure. As ever, Jessica is engaging and gives nuanced answers to questions, exposing her own vulnerabilities while remaining a solid source of wisdom about hiking. You can follow Jessica in several ways, primarily via her YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/c/homemadewanderlust , but also on Facebook at http://Facebook.com/homemadewanderlust , on Instagram at http://Instagram.com/homemadewanderlust , and on X at https://x.com/homemadewl . Also today, Andrew and Beth continue their Trail Magic fest as they reach Massachusetts. They met up with our mutual friend last week, Eric Gross, and shared the picture below. And Dave and his tramily have left New Hampshire and the White Mountains behind. Maine awaits! He wanted me to share his buddy’s YouTube page, where the Over the Hill Gang feature in some of the videos. https://www.youtube.com/@Lt.Hikes0329 Also this week, I’m introducing a new opportunity for listeners to support our show. Our 499th episode features Charlie Rogers, a fellow member of the AT Class of 2019, and an all-round good guy who gives back to the trail as a trail maintainer and shuttle driver. Charlie and I never met, but I would have enjoyed his gentle wit had we met. When he had completed his bucket list item, Charlie took on the role of caretaker at Stanimals Hostel in Glasgow, then moved full time into the area. He still returns to the north from time to time to hike in the White Mountains. Beth and Andrew are about to hit 1500 miles on trail, a landmark moment for everyone, though Andrew appears to be more intent on feeding himself up right now, while Beth is starting to feel nervous about the White Mountains ahead in New Hampshire. Funnily enough, the met up with my friend Eric today, and he sent me this picture. Meanwhile, Dave is already into the White Mountains and getting a real workout every day. He’s now hiking with a solid group, named the Over the Hill Gang, who are tackling these tougher mountains as a team. Here’s a picture from last week, though members drop out and drop in from day to day. Brigid Bell set out on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail just two years ago, and had the most extraordinary encounter in the Smokies. That she lived to tell the tale–and continued her thru-hike–is testament to her resilience and the calmness she gained as a 911 dispatcher. Brigid not only flourished on the trail, but she also grew a deep love for the community she found there, and wanted to give back, eventually finding her way into hostel ownership, at the excellent Weary Feet Hostel. You can check out more of Brigid’s story by reading the excellent Trek interview that initially sparked my interest, as well as Pat Stith’s article. The links are below. A Woman Was Bitten by a Bear on the Appalachian Trail - The Trek and Bear Bait You can follow Weary Feet Hostel on Facebook at Weary Feet Hostel | Bland VA , as well as visit their website at Home Beth and Andrew have reached New York, only to find that the famed rocks of Pennsylvania didn’t end at the New Jersey border. Andrew continues to feed his hunger voraciously, while Beth is mounting up the dinners she owes Andrew by falling too often! They’ve been visited by several friends, a feature of their hike. Dave has made it into New Hampshire and has positioned himself perfectly, with a bunch of fellow hikers as they all prepare for the White Mountains. As you’ll see below, the pictures are also getting even better. Our guests today are Jim and Sarah Klepzig, a couple who lost their 22-year-old son, Tristan, in a terrible car accident five years ago. Tristan is on the left in the picture below, taken just two weeks prior to his accident. How they responded to this tragedy, turning to hiking as a way to heal, has been inspiring and helped the two of them navigate the world after their son. They carry keyrings to commemorate Tristan on their hikes up the Appalachian Trail and other trails. Tristan was a big fan of cinnamon rolls, so the family instigated “Run 4 The Rolls,” a 5k fun run in Jacksonville, Florida. You can follow their Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/run4therolls/?hl=en and read more about the 5k at https://1stplacesports.com/races/run-for-the-rolls/ Beth and Andrew continue to eat their way north, running into trail magic with amazing regularity. Here they are sampling some Pennsylvania rocks. Dave is on the verge of the Vermont / New Hampshire border. Things are about to get real! The calm waters of Stratton Mountain will be a distant memory next week!   I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I’ve been privileged to serve for over a decade. We meet Charles Bruce, or Tracker, this week. Charles is a member of the Appalachian Trail Class of 2022, and he fulfilled a long-held bucket list item when he completed his thru-hike. Charles is from the northeast, and one of his passions is to track white-tailed deer through the snow. While those skills didn’t help with his thru-hike, they gave him his awesome trail name! We’ll hear why he needed to be finished before October, and his current plan to keep a promise he made to his wife. Beth and Andrew have reached, and passed, the halfway marker, while the REAL rocks of Pennsylvania will be keeping them company for the next week or so! Meanwhile, Dave is now very much in job mode, with his goal to finish mid-August very much in his sights. Our guest today is an old friend of the show; Dr Lynne Savino. Lynne always has an interesting take on medical issues related to hiking, and this week, she discusses older hikers on trail. She brings her normal passion for hiking and medicine to the podcast, teaching me a few things along the way. We also caught up with Dave, Beth and Andrew, as they all cope with the heat bubble on the east coast of the US. Dave has moved into Connecticut, his 10th state, and he got this stunning, early-morning view of New York City from the trail a few days ago. Meanwhile, Beth and Andrew have reached the traditional halfway point of Harpers Ferry, where they took the opportunity to visit the ATC headquarters to record the mandatory picture! This is it; the final days on my Camino trip in Spain. We cover the final four days, as well as interviews with Dave, plus Beth and Andrew from the Appalachian Trail. Next week, we'll be back to normal!
Almost there, with the trail now full of people since Sarria. I should be finished this weekend.  Also, Dave is well past the 1200 mile mark and feeling the full effects of Pennsylvania. It hurts!!
We’re closing in on the end and I’m not sure Im ready to be done. We’re back into the mountains and views are opening up all around us.  Beth and Andrew have been joined by more friends to hike with for a few weeks.
I’m back in the rhythm and within a couple of weeks from the end. I’m meeting new people, reacquainting my legs with hills, and eating relentlessly. I love hiking!!! Dave has passed Harper’s Ferry and pushing into Pennsylvania and the rocks!
Today rounds off my last hike into Léon before taking a scheduled break to visit my family for a birthday party, followed by a long detour back to the trail via England, where I watched my beloved Mighty Blues in their unexpected play off final. we also hear again from Beth and Andrew as they take on the first part of the Virginia Triple Crown; Dragon’s Tooth in the rain.
The first half of my Camino hike is done and I’ve arrived at Léon for my scheduled break with family (and a soccer match). Dave is near the halfway point on the Appalachian Trail and has recovered his mojo.
Past the two-week mark and into the Meseta, the journey continues with intimate conversation, communal meals, and changing, yet still beautiful scenery.  We also catch up with Beth and Andrew as they move on from Trail Days.
The Meseta is about to end and I’m about to head south for a few days for a family party. The break has come at a good time to help my feet recover from a pounding.  Beth and Andrew take responsibility for Rufus, a bowling ball. Weird? Yep.
