After nearly two centuries of strict modesty standards, the Mormon Church has made a historic change—women’s garments now allow for exposed shoulders. In this in-depth panel, Mormon women unpack the significance of this shift. From the garments' Masonic roots and historical designs to the ways they’ve shaped modesty culture, sexuality, and control over women's bodies, this conversation dives deep. The panel also explores the social media response, health concerns, and the ongoing discomfort many women still face. In Part 2 of our story, Kyle opens up about his life growing up in the Two by Twos faith — from a childhood shaped by pressure to "uphold the family name," to navigating chronic illness and suppressing his passions for music and basketball in order to prioritize church. We talk about the expectations around professing young, the control over dating, marriage, and even parenting — including the harmful encouragement of corporal punishment. As cracks began to form during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kyle and Kari found themselves questioning everything they believed. From hidden doubts, religious trauma, and Kari’s journey of discovering her bisexuality, to the couple’s darkest moments and eventual transformation, this episode dives deep into how they began rebuilding their lives outside the 2x2 world. We also discuss the emerging abuse allegations within the Two by Twos church, the beginnings of their Ex-Two by Two support group, and the broader fight for transparency and accountability in a faith that claims to have no organization at all. On March 12, 2025, Church educator and BYU professor Jared Halverson released an Instagram short where he stated: “One of the statistics that has worried me the most of late, comes from a survey that was done in 2023 and it’s suggesting that for the first time that I can think of, more women are leaving religion than men are.” Is this true? Why are more women leaving Mormonism than men are? Join us today as we gather with Katie Rich (author of Fifty Years of Exponent II), Amy McPhie Allebest (of the Breaking Down Patriarchy YouTube channel), and Abby Maxwell Hansen (who was threatened with excommunication for her profile on Ordain Women in 2013 and an Exponent II blogger since 2019), as well as writer and columnist Jana Riess to discuss this growing phenomenon.Jared Halverson is an associate professor of Ancient Scriptures and served for over 20 years in the Church Education System. Halverson earned his BA in History and MA in Religious Education. He has been a featured speaker in devotionals as well as in academic settings. Today we are re-introducing Sandra Tanner to a new generation of Mormons, exMormons, and never-Mormons. Both Sandra and her husband Jerald have strong Mormon backgrounds. When he was only eighteen, Jerald began to have doubts about his faith. When they began dating, Sandra Tanner also began to doubt. Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s Jerald and Sandra Tanner were among the first to begin publishing on the problems with Mormon history and its truth claims. They opened a bookstore called the Utah Lighthouse Ministry and began publishing their research. Today we are going to talk about their discoveries on topics such as changes to the Book of Mormon, the problems with the Book of Abraham translation, the Kinderhook plates, how the Church covered up problematic parts of its history, and how they impacted hundreds of people in and out of the Mormon church. For nearly two centuries, Joseph Smith’s involvement in polygamy has been a point of controversy. Historians and more recently, LDS leaders, have affirmed that the Mormon prophet took dozens of wives. But a growing movement within the Church is challenging that narrative, arguing that Smith was a monogamist—and that polygamy was a later invention used to justify the actions of Brigham Young and other church leaders. One of the most vocal advocates of this perspective is Michelle Stone, creator of 132 Problems: Revisiting Mormon Polygamy, a YouTube channel with nearly 120,000 subscribers. A lifelong member of the LDS Church, Michelle once had a strong testimony of polygamy, believing it was divinely inspired. But everything changed ten years ago when her husband questioned whether polygamy was ever truly of God. Determined to prove him wrong, Michelle embarked on a deep dive into historical records—only to find herself questioning whether Joseph Smith practiced polygamy at all. Now, she joins Mormon Stories to share her research, her faith journey, and why she believes the Church has it wrong on one of the most controversial chapters in its history.Show NotesYouTube00:05:22 Why we want to have Michelle on00:15:48 Michelle’s great-grandfather was told by the president of the church to go to Mexico to get a second wife 00:35:07 Her grandfather was called to be a mission president in Tonga, leaving behind other wives00:48:56 She was never taught that Joseph didn’t practice polygamy 01:05:00 Things made more sense once she realized there was problems in church history01:14:00 Trauma of losing a child at the hospital in 2020 during the pandemic 01:24:00 Had an experience where she felt that she saw her daughter grown up01:56:48 Michelle was devastated by the Nov 2015 LGBTQ Policy02:04:50 Discussion of polygamy in the BOM02:14:50 Michelle had a second faith crisis in 202002:32:33 When did she start her YouTube channel “132 Problems”?02:43:34 God saying in the BoM that polygamy is an abomination02:56:01 Has she ever decided differently than what god “commanded”?03:18:15 Discussion on RLDS church and why they split from the LDS church03:19:41 Michelle is asking individuals to “hold a little space” for this new theory03:31:54 Her episode on Emma changed her mind03:49:20 “I have become more confident in my stance since I started speaking out”04:16:57 Michelle’s thoughts on Fanny Alger04:39:45 Why were there rumors of polygamy going on in the church in 1835?05:00:40 Questions on the Nauvoo Expositor05:33:00 How can the church be true if the original men made so many mistakes?05:40:50 What are her thoughts on the church maybe excommunicating her?Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors!Help us continue to deliver quality content by becoming a donor today: One-time or recurring donation through Donorbox Support us on Patreon PayPal VenmoOur Platforms: YouTube Patreon Spotify Apple PodcastsContact us:MormonStories@gmail.comPO Box 171085, Salt Lake City, UT 84117Social Media: Insta: @mormstories TikTok: @mormonstoriespodcast Join the Discord
In December 2024, the Mormon Church released a new chapter in the children’s Doctrine and Covenants Stories on the topic of polygamy. In that chapter they discuss how God sometimes commands his people to live polygamy and how hard it was for Joseph Smith to obey. The chapter also discusses how Joseph’s wife Emma did not want her husband to marry other women. Children were even taught that some of the brethren were arrested and put in prison for living polygamy. After the release of that chapter many people spoke up, criticizing the church for this new content. Many believed these stories were too heavy for children and that by releasing this chapter the Mormon Church was actively teaching a story of sexual assault and grooming.Today we learned that the church changed this chapter. Certain phrasing was removed as well as entire sections of the chapter. Is this due to online criticism of the church teaching children polygamy? Does the Mormon Church cave under pressure? Join us today as John, Julia (from Analyzing Mormonism), and Alyssa Witbeck discuss these changes.YouTubeShow Notes00:07:55 Clip - Criticism forces the church to change00:25:36 Clip - Nathan Hinckley talking about them using the word “hard”00:26:15 Comparing the original and the new version00:35:20 Clip - Is God okay with forced polygamy?00:36:55 Comparing the changes on the second image00:42:20 Clip - “The Mormon church is participating in sexual assault”00:53:46 Clip - Michelle Stone on Emma Smith00:56:10 In the new version this section has been completely taken out01:01:58 Clip - “How did this get through the review process?”01:15:22 Clip - Mormon leaders went to prison01:19:24 The last panel did not change on Woodruff’s manifesto01:26:08 Polygamy is still hard on women today in an eternal aspect01:36:25 What was the 2015 Exclusion Policy and how the church rolled it back01:32:40 Answers from the Church History Survey01:48:17 The story of Zina Huntington01:50:30 Clip - Can consent be given in a Mormon context?01:54:55 This is a positive change overall02:03:10 What is it that causes people to question their faith?02:06:11 Clip - “A faith that blinds you is problematic”02:08:25 Final thoughts___________________At Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. Many have asked the question: Did Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith have sex with his polygamous wives? During his lifetime, Joseph Smith engaged in polygamy (which was illegal in the state of Illinois) and his wives consisted of women who were underage, women who were single, women who were widowed, and women who were already legally married. What is the evidence for his sexual relations with them? Additionally a number of the brethren were also commanded to live polygamy, what is the evidence for sexual relations in those unions? Were any children born in polygamy during the prophet’s life? I just wanted to chime in about the comments about John having a "Mormon voice" because he's understanding and not loud or boisterous.. and yet I've regularly heard him read comments of listeners telling him to calm down or quiet down. I know this is not the subject of the episode but I can't help but notice that the advice to "shush" come from mostly or only female guests and listeners. Imagine if a man was to tell a woman host to water herself down a bit. Just be you, John. Don't tone it down.

While this episode was interesting, I realized early on how speedy Julia speaks and I couldn't help but me more fascinated and curious by that than anything else haha. Is her part being sped up to 1.75x speed by chance? Serious question. Great episode and research though.

This podcast episode is so much BS! That's coming from a Nigerian born African American Christian, living in Ca and a daughter-in-law of LDS followers. There's a whole lot of not calling a thing a thing going on (hint: LDS racism & people pleasing). And the revelation that the Nigerians was ignored for years but once the Nigerian-Biafran war broke out, it must have been a revelation which excuses the mormons from evangelizing the "lost" in Nigeria? Yeah whatever!😂🤨

Why is it unfortunate that anyone thinks conspiratorial , John? A conspiracy is simply two or more people plotting to deceive at least one other person. Another word for that is open-minded. Is that not why you parted ways with the LDS Church and why you embarked on a mission to expose their lies; their conspiracy to deceive?

The blood is on the heads of the leaders of the mormon church. They knew these extremists groups are thriving and they stay silent. Shame on them all. if there is a hell, they belong there.

I have had a completely different experience regarding the church and getting financial help. We live in Queen Creek, AZ and my wife broke her leg several years ago literally a week before our new insurance policies set in. We wracked up more than $10,000 in bills. We told the bishop, he made a phone call, and the next week he told us to send him bills totally $5,000. Those were promptly paid without any fuss whatsoever.

I have to say thar I was so impressed with this bishop and the way this episode was handled. It always sounds so mind-blowing when you hear this out loud. I live in Draper Utah and needed assistance when my husband lost his job. The church makes it extremely difficult to get assistance. Also, our area implemented the self-reliance program, and it is very humiliated and dehumanizing to ask for assistance. Last year, I was in an auxiliary presidency and attended a training on self-reliance. I wanted to vomit. In one of the most affluent areas in Utah. So I am so proud of this bishop for speaking out.

I listened to both episodes, and I’m glad they are happy together, but man - so much hurt and pain caused by these two, and not a lot of remorse (or at least it didn’t seem that way to me). Unfortunately I think they both come off a little narcissistic. Just the fact that he worked his feelings out with Elizabeth between the two of them, before approaching his wife. He should have come to HER with those feelings from the beginning. Instead he had the security of having processed it, lived with it, and having made the decision all before including his wife in the process. Really sad and obviously shows the lack of togetherness there. And when you asked what he wanted to say to his kids, it was all “me, me, me” and no sorry, and seemingly no understanding for what his actions put them through. Likewise, Elizabeth seems to be only worried about how everything has affected her. She’s still dealing with the outcome of her decision to lie to his ex wife. The statement was clear that she hurt
