Today we have a special episode highlighting an interview Dedeker did on the podcast Initiated Survivor, hosted by Kelsey Harper. Kelsey is a clinical psychologist and a survivor of sexual violence, and on her show she speaks directly with other survivors to hear their stories and offer practical skills for reclaiming their lives. Dedeker shares her experience with intimate partner violence within a non-monogamous context, since there are very few (if any) resources for survivors of violence that center queer people or non-monogamous people. Today we're discussing aromanticism and aromantic partnerships! A lot of us have heard of asexuality, but the spectrum of aromanticism is a little less widely known. Someone who is aromantic experiences little to no romantic attraction to people of any gender, and lacks interest in having romantic relationships, but that doesn't mean the connections they may form with others are lesser than those of us who have romantic partnerships. We're going to discuss the spectrum of aromanticism, some of the common challenges and misconceptions aromantic people might face, and share some thoughts from some of our listeners who identify as aromantic or have aromantic partners. Triforce of Communication: 1. Building intimacy or sharing 2. Seeking support or acknowledgement (sympathy/ empathy) 3. Seeking advice or problem solving To remember which Triforce is which... 1. Just in case you were wONEdering, this is what's going on with me right now (or one person sharing, the other listens) 2. It takes TWO people to hug 3. If you're building a THREE-sided pyramid, you need a team of people to come together to solve the problem & for planning 😆
1. What behavior from others runs counter to my personal values? 2. Create a boundary that addresses that behavior (Remember! Boundaries are about protecting myself, not changing someone's behavior) 3. Determine how this boundary will actually be enforced.
Well this is pretty heartbreaking. I was excited to be open but learning I can't ask my partner to prioritize me makes me question if I really want this at all. Monogamy sucks. But the idea of not being allowed to ask for commitment and care when you want or need it....why have a relationship at all if they don't even have to commit to consistently acting like you matter?
Ummm can we talk about how adorable you guys were at 36:59?? Do you even KNOW that you're vibin like that? 😄😁👍
Please consider that asking listeners to post on instagram about your podcast requires that people publicly out themselves. For myself and many others, it is not safe to be out due to the nature of my employment (teaching) and the fact that I am a parent.
loving your new intro!
I can be very critical myself. Personally, I've loosened up on my dishwasher loading skills and I have my boyfriend rinse the dishes as I put them in. He also helps me put away any dishes that he can. I rearrange things all the time so I can find the best way to store things, so I'm very understanding of his being lost sometimes. But trust me, I have plenty of other things that I need to work on.
Thank y’all so very much for this episode! I feel it will help evolve my growth in emotional intelligence and definitely something I will share at our next fam meeting.
may I ask where episodes 2 to 74 went? they do. or appear in my list
♥️♥️♥️
This was sooo useful. Understanding me and some of my relationships much better with this info. Thank you so so so much for creating and working so hard in Multiamory, it is such an important tool in my life. 🤗
I have actually dealt with all of these lol. I had a toxic family relationship that I was actually able to cut off for the most part. I had elements of my relationships with my wife that we both were feeling toxic to each other, but that turned out to be us trying to fit into a dynamic that didn't work for us, so we fixed it. and now I've got a metamour relationship that's proving super difficult to deal with and it's not easily dealt with because we can't exactly leave because we all live together. so I've kinda run the gamut on this 😅
fantastic!
I loved this episode!!!
MUST BE NICE to sleep 8.5 hours if you don't have a child. Guess we parents are all screwed!!!😓😡
This is one of the best episodes I have heard yet! Very interesting topic, and an interesting segue into expressing masculinity. My favorite part is the the theory of expression culture as an alternative to guess culture or ask culture (which each can create coercive circumstances).
This particular episode has been super helpful as I've been questioning a lot about myself and my relationship. your podcast is amazing, thank you for doing this and please keep up the good work!
love love love this podcast. literally have been telling everyone I know about it. ❤️❤️❤️
It's really off-putting, as a married, non-hierachical polya person, that you folks are always mocking and treating marriage as a punchline or as anathema to ENM.
great people talking about great things in a great way. extremely educational helpful and fun
