After midnight on July 6th, 2012, three teenage girls walked into the thick Appalachian woods somewhere along the Mason-Dixon county line. Hours later, under the glow of a nearly full moon, only two walked out.The very last time Dave and Mary Neese saw their only child Skylar was in a grainy black-and-white video. In it, she's sneaking out of her ground-floor bedroom in the middle of the night, her purse over her shoulder, her brown hair swinging as she hurries across the small parking lot to a waiting car. What happened to Skylar Neese has become gothic American lore: the odd girl out in a vicious teenage triangle. But in the ten years since that fateful night beneath the West Virginia stars, a fuller portrait of what happened has emerged. From award-winning journalists Justine Harman and Holly Millea comes a gripping 10-part series featuring Skylar's family, closest friends, and law enforcement who lived the case—and are still living it.

Way too much unintelligible recorded dialog without any interjection or explanation by the host. Also the cadence is weird. It sounds very choppy with breaks in weird places and sound bytes that overlap. Seems like very thorough reporting and a very intriguing, heartbreaking, and infuriating story. Hoping staying the course is worth it.

"'A rapist,' we tell ourselves, 'cannot hide who he is.' What we don't say is that he really doesn't have to." Beautifully said, hideously truthful. One of those moments when something you always knew still comes up and both slaps your face and breaks your heart. Not gonna lie: the marketing of this podcast (the name--which makes more sense after this episode, but in the broader context felt tawdry--coupled with the cover art, and, most unfortunately, the low expectations set by the awful production company head for research, journalistic standards, respecting other podcasters (especially those with the background and education she lacks), and treating a serious subject as anything more than an opportunity for flippant entertainment and, as she quickly learned, another revenue stream) did not lead me to expect much; I actually listened originally *in spite of*, rather than because of, its heavy marketing campaign, mostly because I remembered the original case, had assumed they had been

Everyone is saying this podcast is too liberal/political, etc etc. This story can NOT be told without hearing the story of how the lawyers, DA, etc corrupted it. This podcast is exposing how our local government can play roles and determine outcomes for their own political agenda. This case should have started out pretty simple.... rape. But the local politicians got involved for their own gain. "I knew it would get a lot of attention". Now the case and evidence is soooo tainted that the poor victims might never get a fair trial.

"I asked the neighbor, he seemed to know a lot"... says another neighbor.. 😄... Investigative Journalism at its finest, nothing but he-said-she-said from uptight goody two-shoes. I'm not out to victim-shame but...if you go home with a couple, what do you expect, a game of halma?

Thoroughly enjoying this. Basically the schadenfreude of rich partners living Behind the Orange Curtain. My fave episode has been when the judge hands the DA's ass to him on a platter. Don't listen to the Maga maniacs. They are just weird. I think the mention of homosexuality is too triggering. 🙄

Too many commercials but more importantly, the intro music is awful. So so so terrible.

I thought this was supposed to be about true crime? Literally just sounds like an excuse to expound on how handsome this sick prick is. Do better and stop wasting people's time.
