Last week you all met LaKeya. This week she’s inviting you into another session as she prepares to guide her kids through two exercises that will be really beneficial to their long term menta, emotional and physical health as they cope with the losses of their father and grandfather. LaKeya shares some compelling observations–trauma in her husband’s past, and patterns in how her mother responds in times of conflict that might also point to traumatic life events. These two observations really represent how hurt people go on to hurt people, and how she is breaking that cycle right now.  Let’s stay connected #emcees! When I developed this show, I knew I wanted it to be a space to be inspired by people on the other side of change, but also give a glimpse into the lives of people navigating the change that comes with loss and hardship in real time. In this episode you'll meet LaKeya, a mother of 5, who is dealing with the loss of her husband and his father just seven months apart. In this episode she revisits the trauma, loss and life events she's experienced to date, to identify and unlearn the unhealthy ways she coped, and support her children through grieving the loss of their father and grandfather in a healthy way. We’ll be working through my grief recovery workbook activities, given before 4-week sessions–whether that’s a 1:1, a group session or a session with a couple or family. Participants typically complete one activity before or during the first session, then we progress through additional activities week by week. Let’s stay connected #emcees! Here’s part two of last week’s enlightening conversation with UNC Tar Heels Inside Linebacker, Cedric Gray, along with his NIL agent, Pet Sumner. In this episode I finally wrap my mind around what “NIL” is! And we hear from two student athletes in the DMV area who want to optimize NIL as they head into collegiate sports. All over the country the nation's top high school seniors have been committing to NCAA schools. And football gets the most attention! So this is a timely and relevant conversation about change as it relates to sports—and the road to going pro–or not. We’ve still got football fever after an historic SuperBowl featuring two Black quarterbacks! In today’s episode I’m joined by UNC Tar Heels Inside Linebacker, Cedric Gray, along with his NIL agent, Pet Sumner, who has a story that embodies the conversations we have on this show–a turning point; a life event that changes everything. We’re talking about navigating the change from recreational athlete, to collegiate sports, to pro. The strategy, family conversations, and anxiety-producing scenarios that we aren’t typically privy to. What’s it like transitioning from amateur to pro sports? And what in the world is “NIL”!?! I’m baaack! I’m kicking off season two and episode 34 with goals for 2023–to do things differently, better and more! Now I want to share the dynamic conversations that came out of that event, and how the amazing women who attended that event are ready to star in their own life story instead of playing supporting cast. Listen to the brave and impactful stories from the event participants. It's my last episode of 2022, so I had to make sure I left you in good hands! Today I’m joined by a very familiar face and smile! It belongs to Dr. Ken, mental health expert and licensed professional clinical counselor to individuals and families, along with premarital and relationship counseling for couples. He is the featured marriage counselor and coach on the Bravo TV franchises, Married to Medicine, the RHOA and the RHOP. If soulful Christmas songs were played in your household you know the song, What Do the Lonely Do at Christmas… Today’s conversation is at the intersection of Dr. Ken’s specialties in both relationships and grief. Dr. Ken is here to talk to us about what the lonely can do at Christmas. We’re talking grief, and grieving a relationship and other losses during the holiday season. This is a Thankgsiving miracle… An episode from my lost files! We experienced some technical difficulties during recording that made it seemingly impossible to release the episode. I was able to recover parts of the conversation, and the tone and timing of this conversation could not be more perfect for this time of year. Bridgette Alfred is a past attendee from one of my workshops at the Maryland Department of Labor where I’d presented my ITSME approach. Bridgette penned a novel as a tribute to her mother who’d passed in 2016. She shares how her mother’s history helped her face her own childhood trauma and to heal. And she penned it well into her retirement, which goes to show you it’s never too late to heal and that your past is always a part of your story. Is journaling a part of your healing and self-care toolkit? Have you ever wanted to self-publish a book? Bridgette’s story gives you some insight into the book writing and her experience working with a small, independent publisher while sharing her story and tools for healing after loss, change and trauma. This week we have an emotional Emcee Q+A from a listener who’ll be navigating divorce in the middle of the holiday season. For many this is the kickoff to what’s often described as the happiest season of all… We gather, give thanks, and look forward to reconnecting to loved ones… But for so many others it’s a difficult time of year–as we begin to grieve the people we’ve lost, relationships that have ended, and even mourn the absence of the relationships we want. It can feel more like the holiday blues. I’m going to shift gears as we move into the holiday season. I brand myself as The Change Coach, but what I don’t mention often is that I’m a certified grief recovery specialist. Grief is a normal and human reaction to change and the Grief Recovery Method® is a comprehensive, evidenced-based program that I use and believe in. There are so many events and losses that don’t get the healing and recovery they need. So as we head into the holiday season, I want to share tips and resources from my grief and change frameworks, and the Grief Recovery Method®. My emcees will remember Corey Belin from Episode 24, and his pot-stirring male perspective in the conversation of dating after divorce or separation! After that show Corey pitched online dating to me as a show idea. You’ve seen Corey on Ninja Warrior, and season 4 of the Oprah Winfrey Network TV show, Ready to Love. Now he’s producing a hilariously scripted comedy "tightly based" on his life and experience with online dating and navigating the first date! He now calls himself the First Date King. Midway through our conversation I bring in my second guest, Dr. Kayra Alvarado–an educator and influencer who also served as a community marketing manager with Bumble–to empower women to make the first move, and to confidently move off the app and into first dates. Dana is a doctorally prepared, board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years experience as a healthcare provider. Today we’re talking about change after weight gain and weight loss. Natisha Willis is a DEI practitioner and life and wellness coach. We met when we were chosen by Brown Ambition podcast host, Mandi Woodruff-Santos, for her inaugural career coaching cohort–the Mandi MoneyMakers. We’ve been meeting and chatting since earlier this year. And I was always in awe of Natisha’s story–one of those reasons: in 2018 Natisha made a move most of us only fantasize about–she left the U.S. for a simpler, more gratifying life in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Today she joins me to talk about living and working as an expat and how it’s improved her quality of life across the board–we’re talking mental, emotional and financial Wellness! She’s going to share her story, and we’ll discuss the cultural differences in work styles and priorities as we observe them in the DEI space. And later, we’ll hear commentary from two additional guests, my cousin Ashley Cottrell and my friend Ayoka Blandford who both made similar moves to Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, respectively. And I’ll have them all share some tips–for anyone who's considering making this kind of move, this kind of change  Follow and connect with today's guests on Instagram for a glimpse into their extraordinary lives abroad!
