At just 17, Susan’s world was shattered when her father, LAPD Detective Thomas C. Williams, was ambushed and murdered on Halloween night in 1985. That moment changed everything, pulling her into the depths of grief and trauma. In the years that followed, Susan faced PTSD, loss, and the long, complicated process of rebuilding her life. But instead of letting the darkness define her, she turned her pain into purpose. By embracing vulnerability and speaking her truth, she has shown that healing is possible—even after unimaginable events. Today, Susan is the Author of a profoundly moving book that reminds us of two powerful truths: life can change in an instant, and recovery is always within reach. She talks about masking, being in survival mode, and the confusion of being a high-functioning person with severe depression. In Part 1, she shared her early struggles with mental illness, beginning with cutting at age 11 and two suicide attempts before she turned 21. In this episode, she takes us deeper into the “after”—into the quiet, messy, nonlinear work of recovery. She explains how her trauma carried into her adult relationships, how she learned to identify emotional abuse in real-time, and how she’s slowly starting to believe she is worthy of being loved without condition. Emily’s story is not tied up in a neat little bow—and that’s precisely why it matters. Her mental health journey began at just 11 years old, when she first experienced the weight of emotional pain without words to explain it. Self-harm and isolation followed, eventually leading to two suicide attempts—one during her freshman year of college and another at 20 years old. Despite surviving those moments, Emily was met with silence and shame instead of support. She speaks candidly about being the only young person in a psychiatric unit, about nurses treating her with judgment instead of compassion, and about the decades-long work of learning to feel worthy of love. Her healing is ongoing. And she doesn't pretend otherwise. Emily also talks about being the child of young parents who were navigating their own recovery and mental health challenges—and how that shaped her understanding of love, trust, and emotional connection. Today, she’s raising her daughter with intention, focusing on emotional safety, validating feelings, and breaking generational cycles. She’s also working in healthcare, where she uses her lived experience to bring compassion and awareness into patient care. Her story is messy, raw, honest, and incredibly powerful. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emmiewillyy/   Key Takeaways Healing is not linear. You can still struggle and still be healing—those truths can coexist. Emotional neglect leaves deep scars. Silence around mental health in childhood often echoes into adulthood. Showing up imperfectly is still powerful, especially for those we love.   Actionable Items Save the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in your phone—and share it with someone who might need it. Children need more than comfort — they need the language to name their emotions. Allowing support into your life is a sign of strength, not weakness. Actionable Items When helping a grieving friend, offer specific options (e.g., “Tuesday or Thursday?”) instead of saying “Call me if you need anything.” Use affirming grief language: “There’s a space in my heart for them,” rather than “There’s a hole in my heart.” Write a letter from your loved one to yourself — a powerful reframe for healing and self-connection. Mental Health Quote from the Episode “You can be confident without being a bragging asshole. I just started practicing what I preach—and it’s changing everything.” — Tim Racki Episode Description This candid conversation with Tim Racki—a 10× State Champion Coach and Hall of Famer—unpacks the emotional toll of leadership and the silence behind success. Despite public accolades, Tim reveals how coaching masked internal turmoil, how performance identity shaped his personal life, and why he finally made the decision to care for his mental health. He talks about the moment of clarity that sparked change, the deep shame he felt, and how daily habits are helping him rebuild trust in himself and reconnect with his family. Tim’s story is a roadmap for any man struggling with unspoken emotions or feeling trapped by expectations. Over a 26-year head coaching career, he's secured 10 Illinois state titles, made 12 state title appearances, and built powerhouse programs with lasting legacies. Beyond wins, Tim is known for his integrity, mentorship, and transformational leadership. But behind the accolades is a deeply human story of depression, identity crisis, and the struggle to balance coaching with fatherhood and marriage. Today, Tim speaks openly about mental health in leadership and the importance of vulnerability, reflection, and small daily changes. We cover how to spot burnout, how to reinforce boundaries that actually stick, and why brain-heart coherence is one of the most effective (and simple) tools to ground yourself in gratitude and calm. They’re commitments you keep to yourself. Your nervous system needs support—small choices, such as media detox, movement, and mindful breathing, matter. Gratitude-centered practices, such as brain-heart coherence, can shift your emotional and physiological state in just a few minutes. Actionable Items Practice 3 minutes of brain-heart coherence daily — focus on your heart, breathe deeply, and hold a moment of gratitude. Create a few go-to responses for setting boundaries when emotions run high. Audit your inputs — follow accounts and consume content that uplifts and grounds you. You can still give to others, but the focus should always come back to you.” — Ilise Litwin What This Episode is About: This episode of Sh!t That Goes On In Our Heads is a raw and empowering look at what it means to navigate mental health in a world that often tells us to “just keep going.” Our guest, Ilise Litwin, joins us to explore how anxiety, trauma, social media fatigue, and emotional burnout can evolve into tools for personal growth when we stop pretending to have it all together. With humor, heart, and unfiltered honesty, Ilise shares her story of reinvention—from working in locked psychiatric units to building a life grounded in radical self-care and the freedom to be playful again. We explore what it means to be empathic in a chaotic world, how boundaries can protect our joy, and why reconnecting with your inner child might just be the best therapy of all. Whether you’re a parent juggling too much, someone struggling with anxiety, or simply feeling burned out, this episode will inspire you to redefine what it means to heal—and to do it on your own terms. Being empathic is a gift, but it can become a burden without healthy boundaries. Anxiety is not a flaw. It's often a result of external pressure or biology, not a failure. Learn to adjust your coping tools. Joy is healing. Reconnecting with your inner child through play, laughter, and creativity can be a powerful form of mental self-care. Actionable Tips: Set a Social Media Detox Routine. Schedule weekly screen-free days and use automation to reduce emotional overload. Reclaim Playtime. Draw, dance, wear costumes, or revisit childhood hobbies to reconnect with joy. Visualize Boundaries. Use mental imagery (like protective bubbles) to manage emotional overload and stay grounded.
