Most of us have a conflicted relationship with social media and online life. For today's episode I'm chatting with author Kara Alaimo. Kara's new book, Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women and Girls - And How We Can Take it Back, debuts this month. In our conversation we are sifting through a variety of topics related to how we are influenced as parents and how we can be thoughtful when leading our children into a more mindful online space. Due to some sensitive content, this episode should be first previewed without young children present. Sponsor: Prepdish - Get two weeks free at prepdish.com/families

Many of the guests on this show are authors—especially of non-fiction books. Although we often rely on non-fiction to teach us, sometimes the greatest lessons actually come through diving deeper into the life experiences of characters in a novel. Today, I’m speaking with authors Christine Platt and Catherine Wigginton Greene. Christine and Catherine have co-authored a brand new book that tells the story of an entertaining and thought-provoking interracial friendship between two mothers, De'Andrea and Rebecca. Once upon a time, building a village to raise a family probably felt simpler. The village was likely the (literal) neighbors and family members who lived right around the corner. But in today's world, our communities are more complex and diverse. The people we lean on may live nearby, but they also may live on the other side of the globe. I'm joined by Michelle Kennedy, the founder of the app Peanut, to talk about building community in motherhood. In today's episode, author Michael Easter, shares his work and theories on the topic of comfort. He posits that the growing rates of mental and physical health challenges may be rooted in the fact that we are living more comfortable lives than ever before. As parents, we strive to keep our kids as comfortable as possible when they are infants. But, perhaps we should ask ourselves if continuing on that path will negatively impact their future resilience. As adults, we often avoid uncomfortable situations and even frequently rescue our children from uncomfortable experiences. Let go of the pressure to be the perfect parent and start to embrace the teachable moments that you are (accidentally) creating. In this episode we are flipping around some common summer #momfails. As parents, we are far from perfect. On the bright side, our mistakes often create opportunities for our kids to grow.
At the heart of being an intentional parent is striving to calm our own reactivity. Reactivity...we all experience it. Time management can feel challenging for both children and adults alike. Today, I'm discussing some tools and strategies to start intentionally handing over this responsibility to our children. Today we're talking all about exposure: exposing our kids, and ourselves, to current events, different cultures and different parenting styles. Today I’m sharing my best relationship tool. It’s called expansion and contraction. Expansion and contraction is a simple way to find the rhythm in your family. In fact, it’s probably something you do all the time without even noticing. However, once you bring it to your awareness you will be able to use it with more intention. You’ll find your days flow more smoothly and you view your relationships more positively. "It's not fair!" is a statement uttered by most children pretty early and often. Punishment

I favor a positive parenting approach, so I don't use a lot of rewards and punishments in our house. However, there are times when these methods can be useful and I want to share some examples with you today. When it comes to behavior modification, it's most effective to use reinforcement/rewards when you want to increase a desirable behavior and punishment when you need to decrease undesirable behavior. thx Gaia. I really liked it and think sometimes a well designed screen time tracker can make the child at least partially responsibility on child. what do suggest? creating and implementing ideas is great. e.g.I d suggest using calligraphy menu to a Persian restaurant and I think a tech-free drink reward means a lot for later discussion of parents.

I so enjoyed this episode. We did a 4 week European vacation with our 2 girls (20 months and 4). We spent about 3 weeks in Spain, where we toured with my family (parents and siblings) and then a week in Germany alone to 'debrief'. We've travelled to Europe with our oldest daughter 3 times before (when she was 9 months, 18 months and 2). She was such an easy, happy go lucky child and travelling was so easy with her. This was our first trip with two children. Which in comparison felt like going with 4. Not only are our two kids very different, but 1 + 1 just isn't 2. I too asked myself upon many occasions: why? And said: never again. In hindsight they did really well considering the extreme routine change, and long hours in the car, but when we asked my eldest daughter what she enjoyed most, she said: riding the little cars in the grocery stores (even though we were really tried doing something they enjoyed every day). This made us decide that we would still be traveling locally with th

After many years of accumulating useless junk, filling a house full of what I considered nessicary objects... I became overwhelmed with the mass amounts of "things" that surrounded me...they were constantly in the way and weighing me down . I first found Denayes Facebook page which lead me here. Hands down my favorite podcast! I am inspired each time I tune in. I've been downsizing for the past 6 months, keeping only the important necessities. With a busy toddler and baby number 2 due any day now ...Simple Families has been a life saver. My stress has disappeared.. I'm not constantly worried about the build up of things and now I have more time to focus on my family and our time together. Thanks so much for the "kick in the butt " ;) count imagine going in any other direction now that I'm on this path to success! - Love, from , one happy mama !

By far my favorite podcast - especially of ones focusing on family, simplicity, minimalism, and motherhood. I literally wait with anticipation for more episodes. Denayne has inspired me in so many ways - to pare back, live slower, yell less. her interviews come from a place of curiosity and good intentions, not of perfectionism and judgement. She looks at everything through the lens of research, and many of her guests are top people in their fields. It's also not overly salesy. If you're a mom, this is a must-listen.

I love this podcast. I found it after having my now one year old, and Denaye and her guests have given me so much of the guidance I have been looking for as a new parent. I trust her knowledge and expertise, which is so valuable in the internet world where there are so many different voices with different views.

This is my absolute favorite podcast! I recently began simplifying my life, and I have found these podcasts very helpful for both my personal life and my job. Denaye has a lot of knowledge and experience to offer, and she often brings in other people to share their knowledge and experiences. I find this particularly helpful because everyone is a little different. Sometimes I relate more to Denaye, but other times I relate more to her guests. Being part of the community she has created has definitely added to my life.
