Description

This election year, our democracy hangs in the balance. We need news coverage that cuts past punditry and gives a voice to the new electorate – the marginalized folks that depend on a functioning democracy. Enter: The Amendment, a new podcast about gender, politics and power from The 19th News and Wonder Media Network, hosted by award-winning journalist and 19th editor-at-large Errin Haines.

Each week, Errin sits down with people who have fresh perspectives on the state of our country – and asks questions that center the voices of women, queer folks, and people of color. The Amendment adds much needed asterisks to America’s most pressing political conversations – and gets clear on the unfinished work of our democracy.

This week, Republicans are convening in Milwaukee to officially elect former President Donald Trump as the party’s nominee. But what would a second Trump administration actually look like? The answer may very well lie in a lengthy document of conservative priorities called Project 2025. To unpack this document, we’re talking to Rachel Leingang who reports on democracy and misinformation for The Guardian. Rachel walks us through the particulars of Project 2025 and how it's what she calls “the meat on the bones” for conservative causes nationwide.Follow Rachel Leingang on X @rachelleingangFollow The 19th on Instagram, Facebook, X and via our newsletters. Follow Errin Haines on Instagram @emarvelous and X @errinhaines.Follow Wonder Media Network on Instagram @wmn.media, X @wmnmedia, and Facebook. Last week, the Supreme Court wrapped up a controversial and consequential session that addressed abortion, guns and presidential power, just to name a few. The once favorable views of the Court have fallen to historic lows in recent years thanks in part to the conservative majority.  And since the Dobbs decision in 2022, many Americans are concerned that the court’s decisions are not reflective of the American people. Senior opinion writer and columnist for Boston Globe Opinion and co-host of the legal news podcast #SistersInLaw, Kimberly Atkins Stohr breaks down some of the biggest decisions from the session and explains the ripple effect the Trump immunity will have on the presidency. Follow Kimberly Atkins Stohr on X @KimberlyEAtkinsFollow The 19th on Instagram, Facebook, X and via our newsletters. Follow Errin Haines on Instagram @emarvelous and X @errinhaines.Follow Wonder Media Network on Instagram @wmn.media, X @wmnmedia, and Facebook.  Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, joins 19th reporter, Jennifer Gerson, to discuss the powerful role of White suburban women in the fight against gun violence. Having played a key role in shifting the culture of gun violence, Shannon knows how White women can best serve movements that disproportionately impact communities of color. Shannon explains that no matter the outcome of the election, gun reform needs grassroots activism in the face of legislative inaction. We often separate voting blocs by race — we talk about “the Black vote,” “the Latino vote,” “the White vote,” “the Asian-American vote.” but in reality, these are all big — often disparate — groups of people. So this week, to close out Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders Month, we wanted to do a deep dive on the AANHPI voting bloc. The novel “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler begins in the year 2024 – in a world where democracy is at stake, a climate crisis rages, and extremist politicians are on the rise. Over the last 40 years, evangelical Christians have become an influential voting block. White evangelical support for Donald Trump exceeded 80 percent in the 2016 election. The intensifying politicization of the evangelical movement has been too much for some, and many are leaving the church. To understand the voting patterns of evangelicals and the exodus of young evangelicals, Errin chats with Sarah McCammon, a national political correspondent for NPR and author of “The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church.” Follow Sarah McCammon on X @sarahmccammon and Instagram @sarahmccammon_journalistFollow The 19th on Instagram, Facebook, X and via our newsletters. Follow Errin Haines on Instagram @emarvelous and X @errinhaines.Follow Wonder Media Network on Instagram @wmn.media, X @wmnmedia, and Facebook. To donate to The 19th as part of our Spring Member Drive, please go to 19thnews.org/springmemberdrive Hosted on Acast. Asian massage workers and sex workers have long been the targets of violence in America – but their stories often get pushed to the margins. Yin Q – one of the core organizers of Red Canary Song, a collective organizing with and for Asian and migrant sex workers – joins the show to share some of the stories of their community, break down the history of violence against Asian sex and massage workers, and sketch out what a future where sex work is decriminalized would look like.Learn more about Red Canary Song at https://www.redcanarysong.net/, and follow them on Instagram @redcanarysong. Follow The 19th on Instagram, Facebook, X and via our newsletters. Follow Errin Haines on Instagram @emarvelous and X @errinhaines.Follow Wonder Media Network on Instagram @wmn.media, X @wmnmedia, and Facebook.  Hosted on Acast.
