A number of lifestyle related illnesses have uncontrolled inflammation at its core. Whether that’s obesity, heart disease or even dementia, inflammation appears to play a role.I’ve done a free mini-series on inflammation that you can find on my newsletter, where I talk about the big drivers of inflammation (namely gut health, exercise, sleep and mindset) and we’ve done a number of episodes on inflammation on the podcast to determine what it is and why we’d all be better reducing it. From blood sugar and gut health to inflammation ginger has many people espousing its benefits. There are tons of folklore remedies using ginger for indigestion, headaches, infections. But is there any science to back this up?In the Doctor’s Kitchen we want people to learn about the history of food, the nutritional benefits of ingredients so everyone can make an informed decision about their dietWhether you choose to include more or less ginger in your diet is completely up to you, but I hope we can help our healthy foodie listeners to appreciate the science of this incredible spice.Despite the poor evidence or lack thereof in some cases, there are some intangible benefits with all foods whether the science is there or not. Foods evoke memories, which impacts our emotions, our psychological states. There are many things that we can’t determine through looking at a clinical trial in isolation. So don’t be disheartened and remember to be intuitive about what you feel works for youI do love cooking with ginger for its health and flavour properties. I add it to curries, stews and teas. I’m always on the search for better sleep. I’ve tried supplements, better pillows, meditations but there always appears to be a day or 2 in my week where I don’t sleep well. And on the one hand, I was pleased to find out that that’s about average and that’s not particularly abnormal, but I still want better sleep.Today, Dr David Garley is on the podcast, he works as a GP in Bristol and is director of The Better Sleep Clinic. He treats a wide range of sleep disorders, mainly working with insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea and sees first hand the impact that poor sleep can have on physical and mental health. A lot of relatives have told me in the past about chewing cloves everyday.  It’s part of a habit for some people and a traditional cure for toothache and gum disease. But, depending on who you speak to, the benefits extend to the digestive system, inflammation and even longevity.So here at the Doctor’s Kitchen we decided to do a deep dive into this wonderfully strong spice that we use often in recipes such as broths, stews and of course biryani.Here are the things you need to knowIt’s a potent spice that at the very least, contributes more polyphenols and diversity to your plate. Hello! I had a personal search for my happy and healthy life. My biggest health problem was Asthma. I had problems with my respiratory system and it was really ruining my life.
