This week, in honor of National Native American Heritage Day, we are re-releasing one of our most popular series: our three-part interview with Carolyn DeFord. In the final installment in our series covering the life of MMIW advocate and daughter of a missing person, Carolyn DeFord, we learn how the disappearance of her mother, Leona Kinsey, has shaped her current world--and work--and the crisis she sees in MMIWCR cases; disappearances and murders are undercounted, underreported, misclassified, and rarely addressed outside action groups and specific political campaigns. Carolyn, and advocates like her, are changing that. And they need your help.  Submit a case to The Fall Line: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/case-submissions   Written, researched, and hosted by Laurah Norton, with research assistance from Bryan Worters, Kyana Burgess, and Michaela Morrill/Interviews by Brooke Hargrove/Produced, scored, and engineered by Maura Currie/Content advisors are Brandy C. Leona Kinsey disappeared on October 25, 1999; her daughter Carolyn has both searched for answers in her mother’s cold case—and has pondered what she’ll do if she finds what she seeks. Now an adult and an activist for MMIGW, and all missing and murdered Indigenous people through her Facebook group Missing and Murdered Native Americans, Carolyn continues the story of her young adulthood, and recounts the experience of hearing of her mother’s disappearance from a state away. In the early morning hours of September 28, 2015, Joseph Smedley, who was an Indiana University student, chemistry major, and Sigma Pi fraternity brother, sent his sister, Vivanne, a strange late-night text message: she shouldn’t try to contact him—he was leaving the country. Vivianne knew something was wrong; she began a near-week long search for her brother that ended when his body was pulled from a nearby lake. A bookbag weighed down with close to 70 lbs of rock was strapped to his body. Joseph’s death was ruled a suicide, and his case was closed. Today, his sister, Vivianne, and a local Indiana podcaster, Stacy Bridavsky, are working to have his case re-examined.    Thanks again Vessi! On Friday, June 7th, 1985, Nashville’s The Fan Fair, also known as “The Country Explosion” was days from its grand opening, and the city was flooded with strangers; the same afternoon, a man named Ricky Lee Franks would return to Nashville, his hometown, and see his family—briefly—before disappearing. Ricky Lee Franks had been living in a group home in Dickson, TN, and no one—not the cold-case detective now assigned to his case, or Ricky’s eldest sister, Sylvia—is quite sure how Ricky made his way back to Nashville that Friday. They also don’t know what happened afterward. . . though there have been leads that have taken investigators across state lines. That’s because years later, his family would hear startling reports of a stranger, calling himself Ricky Franks, traveling across the Southeast.  This two-part series looks at Ricky’s disappearance and Sylvia’s near-40-year-quest to find her brother.  Go to https://www.framebridge.com/ and use promo code FALLLINE to save an additional 15% off your first order.   Tickets to The Raymond Green International Outreach Gala: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-night-of-unity-black-tie-gala-tickets-404902402987?aff=estw&utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-source=tw&utm-term=listing   Submit a case to The Fall Line: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/case-submissions   Written, researched, and hosted by Laurah Norton, with research assistance from Bryan Worters, Kyana Burgess, and Michaela Morrill/Interviews by Brooke Hargrove/Produced, scored, and engineered by Maura Currie/Content advisors are Brandy C. Warner Robins, Georgia is a military town that is attractive to families seeking affordable housing and good schools--and few long-term missing-persons cases. The oldest case on record is the disappearance of Bula Mae Robertson, a local mother who vanished late one night in October of 1993, leaving her teenage daughters and extended family without any sign as to where she might have gone, or what could have happened to her. Now, with the aid of a reward, investigators and Bula’s family hope that her case can be resolved.  Submit a case to The Fall Line: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/case-submissions Sponsors: -Go to https://www.functionofbeauty.com/FALLLINE to take your Hair Goals quiz, and you’ll save 25% on your first order. -Go to https://www.framebridge.com/ and use promo code FALLLINE to save an additional 15% off your first order. -Sign up today at https://www.butcherbox.com/FALLLINE to get a 10-14 lb turkey FREE with your first box Written, researched, and hosted by Laurah Norton, with research assistance from Bryan Worters, Kyana Burgess, and Michaela Morrill/Interviews by Brooke Hargrove/Produced, scored, and engineered by Maura Currie/Content advisors are Brandy C. Eric Carter-Landin didn’t set out to be an advocate; but as the family member of a murder victim whose case was closed, he watched other disturbing cases unfold in his home state of New Mexico, and he felt called to do something about it: to help families, to shine a light on the failings in the system, and, eventually, to seek justice for his own brother, who was was killed at only nine months old.   Sponsors: -Go to https://www.functionofbeauty.com/FALLLINE to take your Hair Goals quiz, and you’ll save 25% on your first order. -Go to https://www.framebridge.com/ and use promo code FALLLINE to save an additional 15% off your first order. -Sign up today at https://www.butcherbox.com/FALLLINE to get a 10-14 lb turkey FREE with your first box   Justice for Jacob: https://www.change.org/p/da-clint-wellborn-please-reopen-the-case-of-the-murder-of-jacob-landin True Consequences: https://www.trueconsequences.com/ Sources at our website: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/sources Submit a case to The Fall Line: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/case-submissions   Written, researched, and hosted by Laurah Norton, with research assistance from Bryan Worters, Kyana Burgess, and Michaela Morrill/Interviews by Brooke Hargrove/Produced, scored, and engineered by Maura Currie/Content advisors are Brandy C. Having lost my son, only child who I was very close to, I can understand Tamika’s pain. I too have lost my capacity to stay focused on things or remember things. Grief is so life changing in many ways. Sending her love from one grieving mother to another. Angie

It's not Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. Lincoln is part of Talladega County.

it's horrifying that people would try to coerce murder victims' family members into participating in their documentaries

Do you have any contact information for Elia's family? I have some information I would like to share with them.

life is crazy. Very sad about this woman. What is crazy is I was driving in La Grande today while listening to this. I also drove over the blue mountains above Elgin where I'm sure is the area she loved and most likely ended up.

if gender reconstruction was so rare in the 80s should this have made her easier to identify? who performed her breast augmentation? Isn't there medical records? serial numbers in the implants?

maybe it is just me but I feel like the story telling at least in the 1st 3 cases is very disorganized and especially in this case hard to follow. feels like baby x and y and other keep getting brought up in fragments and comments but then jump back to the story initially being told and then another comment about a another case ...it is very confusing.

This was genuinely hard to listen to, a little girl tried to escape abuse and ended up murdered.

THANK YOU for posting this episode. so important and I am so happy you are shedding light on something many non-indigenous ppls might not know about. and having someone on to talk about indigeneity in general, and why it is important to understand the role it plays in so many of our lives, and how we define it ourselves versus how others define it for us.
