Description

Joe Marler used to hate people, but then he met Tom Fordyce, and a load of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, and a podcast was born that changed his mind forever. It might just change your life too.

Because everyone is interesting if you ask the right questions. And this is a show about all the weird and wonderful things people do.

Together, Joe and Tom meet astronauts, teachers, marine biologists, cheesemakers, prison guards and everyone in between. Along the way, they’ve learned things that have blown their minds, heard stories that have made them laugh until it hurts, and – well, felt a whole lot better about the world around them and the people that fill it.

This is a classic episode from back when we had no listeners. Today, meet groundskeeper Terry - a listener who knows when to pour water onto grass that’s too dry. This week our guest is Ben, who is a pharmacist. Joe and Tom ask him everything they've ever wanted to know about the drug industry, including can you fake a prescription? Should some drugs be legal? And how can you manage patients who become addicted to medication. There is also a very funny story about a man who tied a Sainsbury's bag to the end of his penis... This is a classic episode from back when we had no listeners, and today it's about AI. Will robots take over the world? What’s the point in humans? Do insects have ears? And is a toaster just a toaster? Joe and Tom speak to Lydia, a research data scientist at the Alan Turing Institute, and she is way more intelligent than them.  If you would like to be a guest on the show, click here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1rfSo3PVJgtBRZHCCAZndem-iyy2EdvGcEYDqycsM2aQ/viewform To get ad-free and longer episodes on Apple, hit the 'grow the show' button or click: https://apple.co/3sAX0xR On Spotify you can subscribe for £1 a week by clicking this link: https://anchor.fm/thingspeopledo To become an official sponsor, go to Patreon.com/thingspeopledo To grow the show on socials, look for @thingspeoplepod on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok Send us your ideas for the show, and questions for Joe and Tom to joe@crowdnetwork.co.uk Music courtesy of BMG Production Music Learn more about your ad choices. Today, Joe and Tom meet Ellen, who is a cinema manager at the Campbeltown Picture House in Scotland... if you are ever near by, you should go, it sounds wonderful. They ask her everything you'd ever want to know about cinemas, such as why are the snacks so expensive? What is the weirdest item that has ever been left? And what are the films that have caused most people to walk out? Plus, Joe tells us about his experiences watching possibly the most random and disturbing film of all time. And turns out it's a real film, he wasn't making it up. Ellen has a podcast called 'Down The Back Of The Seats', and you can listen to it here: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/down-the-back-of-the-seats/id1690055014 You can also also follow her on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/downthebackoftheseats/ If you would like to be a guest on the show, click here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1rfSo3PVJgtBRZHCCAZndem-iyy2EdvGcEYDqycsM2aQ/viewform To get ad-free and longer episodes on Apple, hit the 'grow the show' button or click: https://apple.co/3sAX0xR On Spotify you can subscribe for £1 a week by clicking this link: https://anchor.fm/thingspeopledo To become an official sponsor, go to Patreon.com/thingspeopledo To grow the show on socials, look for @thingspeoplepod on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok Send us your ideas for the show, and questions for Joe and Tom to joe@crowdnetwork.co.uk Music courtesy of BMG Production Music Learn more about your ad choices. This is a classic episode from back when we had no listeners, and when Joe used to record the show from his car. Today's is a whole episode about police dogs and how great they are. Our guest this week is Daan, who is a free diver and a man with possibly the most calming voice in the world. He can also hold his breath underwater for over 6 minutes, which is unbelievable. Daan is here to tell us about his life as a freediver. He tells us all about the beauty of the oceans, the feeling you get from diving 100 meters under water, and why sharks are misunderstood. Joe, Tom and Producer Ryan are back together to discuss how we grow this shambles of a podcast. There is some pressing bin chat on the agenda, as the emails have been flooding regarding the various recycling colours... but is there a show growing solution? The team also discuss the idea of young people dressing up as Joe for world book day, an uncomfortable urinal encounter at Chatham Services, and producer Ryan gets himself in trouble with the neon sign situation. This week we're putting on our Ant-Man suits and shrinking down super small with John, the Micro Engineer. He makes tiny things. Like seriously tiny. But why do we need things to be so small? He brings in his normal size bag of tiny tricks to show us how small micro really is and almost brings Joe to tears with the smallest Valencia ice lolly the world has (probably) ever seen. But don't get on the wrong side of him. Because if he wanted to, he could probably take over the world with special super tiny spy gadgets? We are back at The Clapham Grand for another episode of Things People Did, who is probably the first person to ever leave Joe Marler sweating and lost for words. Stephen worked in a supermarket for 6 years, a job he describes as 'the best ever', he licked envelopes for a week and worked as a TV runner, where he lost his mind making Cheryl Cole a cup of tea. We'll be honest, this episode is pure filth and you will love it. Our guest today is TV royalty, and one of the cleverest person we've ever had on the show - it's Richard Osman! He is here to tell us all about how game shows work, including why 'Deal or No Deal' basically sums up human nature, why The Traitors is deeply flawed, and why he wishes he had created 'The Weakest Link'. We also ask him to help us create our own game show, which goes terribly, and he has a quizzing showdown with out very own Mastermind, Joe Marler. She is a wildlife cinematographer, and has worked on pretty much every massive nature and David Attenborough documentary you can think of. She has filmed incredible species in their natural habitats, including lions, penguins, bears and killer whales. She has seen incredible things, but we also learn about the unglamorous sides of the job, including being stuck in a hide for 27 hours with no toilet, and having to eat frozen cucumber sandwiches whilst not getting trampled by elephants. She tells us all about her jobs before coming a comedian, including the time she was a waitress and dropped a gravy boat on a bride, working in an ice cream van and eating all the flakes, and the time she worked as a Christmas Elf for a Mr and Mrs Claus who were father and daughter. If you're into in that sort of thing, you'll love this episode. Our guest is Phil, who has been a bin man since he was 19. He tells us about the pranks you used to be able to pull before Ring doorbells came along, the worst smelling items he's ever experienced, and about the weird things he's found in peoples rubbish. He also tells us how the rude customers he experiences, and how people still look down on bin men to this day, but without them we would be screwed. We're a fan of Phil, and you will be too. Joe, Tom and Producer Ryan are back for another committee meeting, to discuss how we actually grow this show. It's been a positive month for the podcast, with stellar guests and upward movement in the charts... but have we got a neon sign yet? This episode will make you fall in love with libraries, that's a fact. Our guest is Lara, who is not your stereotypical librarian, in the sense that she doesn't spend her days telling people to 'ssshhhhh' or chasing people for fines. In this episode we discuss how libraries have changed the world, what the best excuses people have given for not returning a book, and 'that' aisle that is in every library where people get up to no good. Joe also shares his knowledge on books, which is basically The Hungry Caterpillar and a made up one from 'The Mummy'.
