In the series, Whitworth takes a close look at why these students might have been targeted, how fear can grip a town when little information comes from law enforcement, and what happens when your community becomes the latest “true crime” storyline. It began as a weekend of football, parties, late-night food and good friends -- a normal Saturday night in the college town of Moscow, Idaho. But Sunday morning, four University of Idaho students, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, are found stabbed to death in their beds. Through friends, witnesses, video surveillance and social media footage, in Episode 1 we get to know who the victims were and reconstruct their final hours.

Nearly eight hours after the murders, police receive a 911 call from the King Road house. Why the delay? Who discovers the murder scene and what do they see? Police don’t offer many answers initially, except to say they believe the murders were “targeted,” and that the community is safe. But without more information, speculation starts to swirl about who killed these students and why. Media descend to report the story, and amateur internet sleuths turn this real-life tragedy into true crime entertainment – and the small town of Moscow endures a second wave of trauma.

The small-town police department of Moscow, Idaho, is thrust into the national spotlight, as they try to solve a quadruple homicide and hunt down a killer. Law enforcement gives little information about their investigation until six weeks after the murders when they make a surprising arrest. With that arrest comes a bombshell affidavit outlining all the evidence they’ve kept so closely guarded throughout the investigation.

What was Bryan Kohberger’s life like before he was charged with these murders? People who knew him in his teenage years, in college, and right before he was arrested last December offer conflicting narratives. There's the Kohberger who helps save a colleague’s life and the Kohberger who makes other coworkers feel uncomfortable, even fearful. There’s the Kohberger who succeeds in school, is passionate about his classes, and impresses his professors. Then there’s the Kohberger who clashes with people in his criminology graduate program and loses his teaching job. We piece together a portrait of the man who will go on trial this fall for the King Road killings, and if convicted, could face the death penalty.

Moscow is trying to move on from these horrific killings -- trying to find its way back to being a place that's more than the one terrible thing that happened here back in November 2022. But the trial of the suspected killer is fast-approaching, and it’ll surely throw this small town back into the national spotlight.
In this episode, we look at key evidence for the prosecution, and how Kohberger's defense team could challenge that evidence. We'll also spend time with the victims' families and members of the Moscow community to ask, how do you heal from the trauma of these killings?
