Introducing Vanessa Van Edwards: Stop Overthinking Every Social Interaction! (Use THESE Cues to Be Liked, Respected, and Build Confidence in Every Conversation) from On Purpose with Jay Shetty.Follow the show: On Purpose with Jay ShettyWhat usually holds you back from starting a conversation? Can you remember a time you avoided someone out of fear of saying the wrong thing? Jay sits down with behavioral researcher and bestselling author Vanessa Van Edwards for a powerful conversation that blends science, honesty, and so many surprising moments. Vanessa, who refers to herself as a “recovering awkward person,” shares how her biggest social struggles became the driving force behind her mission to crack the code on human connection. Together, Jay and Vanessa dive into the fascinating world of charisma, exploring the 97 cues, from eye contact to tone of voice, that quietly shape how we’re seen and understood. Vanessa breaks down why so many of us feel overlooked or underestimated—and introduces “signal amplification bias,” a concept that explains why the signals you think you’re sending might not be landing the way you expect. Vanessa shows us how confidence isn’t always something you’re born with but something you can build, with intention and awareness. The conversation goes even deeper as they unpack the tricky balance between warmth and competence, especially for women in the workplace, and how vulnerability isn’t a weakness, but often your greatest strength. They explore how to create those magic “me too” moments that form instant connections, spot the hidden red flags in communication, and let go of the need to be liked by everyone in order to be truly seen by the right people. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Make a Great First Impression Without Saying a Word How to Break the Ice with a Simple “Hey” How to Balance Warmth and Competence in Any Conversation How to Create Connection Using “Me Too” Moments How to Exit a Conversation Gracefully (Without Offending Anyone) How to Spot a Liar Using Body Language and Micro-Expressions How to Ask Better Questions That Spark Real Conversations How to Recognize the Difference Between Charisma and Manipulation Whether you struggle with social anxiety, want to level up your leadership presence, or are just tired of surface-level small talk, this episode is packed with practical tools and uplifting wisdom to help you connect with more authenticity and power. This week, we’re bringing you something special: an episode from Add to Cart, a show we love hosted by Kulap Vilaysack and SuChin Pak. You might remember Kulap when she was a guest on our show back in 2018, where she bravely unpacked her childhood trauma and shared how it led to her documentary film. Add to Cart is a witty, subversive take on consumerism. Each week, Kulap and SuChin have candid (and often TMI) conversations about what they’re adding to or removing from their carts—whether it’s products, people, trends, or philosophies. Together, they explore what we’re buying into and what it reveals about who we are.  In this episode, they’re joined by author and journalist Vicky Nguyen for the very first Auntie Book Club of the year, diving into her powerful memoir Boat Baby. Vicky talks about going from boat refugee to national TV and why the R is for refuse in her household. wow... generation of fear. I remember growing up and my mother would allow me to stay in the car if we've been out all day and I didn't want to go into a shop or two. this could take 10 minutes or 30... sometimes you'd be left with the keys to listen to the radio. nothing never happened. As a parent now, my wife would never leave our kids in the car. I have and would. Nothing longer than 10 minutes. I have no idea how this shift happened, but it's ruining kids, parents and more.

I cried for nearly an hour while listening to this. I had to terminate at 23.6 weeks last April due to brain issues and so much of this echoed my own experience. I'm forever changed. Thank you for highlighting how awful it is on the mom to have to make this decision.

Well done. Sound quality great. It is nice to hear that motherhood is not a walk in the park for others as well. It reminds me of a coffee house chat with moms sitting around talking about parenting and child birth stories! I would like more episodes. Maybe branch out more into toddlerhood. I have one 3 year old and three 1 year olds. The babies are a piece of cake compared to the 3 year old!

I’m in grad school. I don’t have kids, and only a handful of my friends are starting families at this point. How did I even find my way here? All that aside, I really enjoy The Longest Shortest Time. I find Hillary Frank thoughtful and sincere, and, in my opinion, the topics are both interesting to and engaging for an audience wider than one might expect.

I generally enjoy listening to this podcast, with the exception of a few episodes. Hillary does a great job of drawing out people’s stories. However, I am stunned by the dearth of cultural diversity among the subjects! I can recall only one episode that talked about the parenting experience of a black woman. There is so much richness to explore in the unique experiences of people of color, immigrants, and second generation people who are parenting as members of a different economic class than the one they grew up in. It seems that most guests are people Hillary knows one way or another, so they tend to be white and middle or upper-middle class. But she needs to try harder and branch beyond her social circle.
