A party in the Bronx on August 11th, 1973 is widely considered to be the birthplace of hip-hop. The art form has since touched every corner of our world and evolved into one of the most significant cultural forces today. This year, on hip-hop's 50th anniversary, we’re giving it a proper tribute.
50 Years of Hip-Hop is KEXP’s newest podcast. Hosted by Larry Mizell Jr, the series highlights a different year of rap history each week. Jumping around the timeline from 1973 to today, expect personal reflections, iconic tracks and albums, and conversations around the genesis of the culture. New episodes drop every Wednesday starting February 1.

Today, we bring you an episode of KEXP's Live on KEXP podcast featuring an exclusive session with Japanese Breakfast.
There are many negative ways one could sum up 2021 but one shining bright positive title we can give it is "The Year of Michelle Zauner." The Oregon-born artist is probably best known as Japanese Breakfast and released the stellar album Jubilee this June but is also now an acclaimed author with the release of the New York Times bestseller Crying in H Mart in April.
For this episode of Live on KEXP we share a clip of Zauner’s conversation with Cheryl Waters about how writing the book exorcised the pain and trauma so that she could portray the joy felt on Jubilee. Zauner then plays four tracks from Jubilee plus one from her side project with Crying’s Ryan Galloway, BUMPER.
Recorded June 21, 2021.
Songs performed:
Kokomo, IN
Tactics
Be Sweet
Savage Good Boy
Ballad O

excellent vibe thx kexp
It would be really helpful if the names of artists along with their song would be mentioned on in the comments' section. (: Awesome though.
Been out of the indie music scene for a while and these podcasts have been great at getting me back into the scene - I particularly like the fact that you get different mc's/hosts with different tastes and that it's not limited to the Seattle area (although it's mainly North West bands). Also like that its not limited to rock - they've got some good Hip Hop, Pop and Electronic in there as well.
❤ Cheryl Waters!! The best music!
See from my name I'm from Seattle. I grew up with 50's, 60's, and 70's music and thought it the real music had died and been replaced by silly young girls singing formulaic nonsense, until I happened upon KEXP. Now, except for Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 on KSER Everett I listen to nothing but KEXP. The music has replaced most classic rock for me. It is the most interesting rock music out there today.
