🗨️ Guest Quotes
🎶 Nic Martinez on the Power of Music
"It's so powerful that it's almost like magic. It's really one of the purest forms of magic in the world, I believe, is music." 🎶✨
🤕 Nic on Weight Cutting
"Priming your system. Yeah, but the problem with that is, you do lose that water in the most important parts of the body, such as the brain, and you're using your hands in combat. That's why a lot of guys can end up breaking their hands because they lost a lot of the fluid around there, and so they become more brittle." 🥴👊
🌱 Nic on Attention and Intention
"That's how you're really going to manifest the things in your life, is where you put your attention, that's where stuff is going to grow." 🌱
📖 Nic on the Power of Words
"Strengthening your definition. So while we don't like to read, The, uh, the dictionary could be very, very helpful. Words are by far one of the strongest swords that we have to wield as humans." 📖✨
🌞Nic on Circadian Rhythms
"I'm just really into circadian rhythms, sun and moon, and everything else is up there." 🌞🌛
Jay's enthusiastic response, "That's the only real thing there is," underscores their shared curiosity and openness to unconventional wisdom 🎧🌌.
🍃Nick on the breathwork
"The Sanskrit word for breath is spirit. So tying back into that intelligent design that keeps us operating and the breath that comes back, there is something divine about that." 🍃✨
🏫Nick on AI in school
"No one's really going to be able to replace a solid professor in the classroom. You could put some AI in front of them, but ultimately, that frequency that shows up that day... It's not going to resonate with those human souls in the same way that an artificial frequency would." 🏫❤️

Jay Hicks
Host / Owner
Florida native Jay Hicks is a veteran, music producer, podcaster, graphic designer, and the owner and creative mind behind The Tragedy Academy Podcast. Jay has held many careers, from digging septic drain fields to being a Financial Services Solution Architect Manager for one of the nation's largest consulting firms. Jay has experience producing and engineering podcasts, voice-overs, promotional videos, and advertisements.
Why did Jay start the show?
I lived most of my life imprisoned in my mind, a slave to past experiences, choices, and anxiety over the future. Seemingly random memories and worries trapped me: Will I be successful? Am I successful enough? Does she love me? Will people admire me? Do people hate me? Am I the way that I am because someone made me this way? Someone told me I'm no good. Does that mean it is true? I experienced shame over past bad decisions or was overly prideful with no need. The list of mental agonies is endless.
Looking at this box created around my life, I can see that I had succumbed to an onslaught of past and present thoughts. I had forgotten entirely about NOW. I wasn't grateful for today, the moment, family, friends, or existence itself. I will not break down my construct and inner demons, but I want to give some insight and share my thoughts on what I believe is missing from humankind today.
I never learned how to be thankful and present now. I was taught to focus on the perceived problems from my past experiences or my need to prove something to imaginary adversaries. For myself, it has been a journey to this point - not good, not bad, just experiences as they all define who I am today. Without them, I would not see this need to be grateful in my own life. This realization is what drives my work, my creativity, and my mission.
Gary DeFranco
Cohost
Cleveland native Gary DeFranco is the Emmy-nominated Executive Producer of UFC's The Ultimate Fighter and Discovery Channel's Street Outlaws and has produced over 500 television episodes for major networks (ESPN, Fox, Discovery Channel, Playboy TV, Spike TV, Bravo, Travel Channel). 🎙️ Guest Bio: Jeff Heim - The Shark Tooth Hunter with a Bite of His Own
Hey there, listeners! Meet Jeff Heim, the fearless adventurer you might recognize from a viral sensation—the guy who survived an alligator bite to the head while diving for shark teeth back in May 2021. But hold up, there's more to Jeff than that jaw-dropping encounter! 🐊
Before he even had his close-up with Mr. Alligator, Jeff was already living the dream as a shark tooth hunter, turning his passion for fossilized chompers into a real gig. Jeff's mission is to pivot that gnarly experience into something profoundly positive through his venture, SHRKco. 🦈
With 2021 being a record year for animal extinctions (yikes 😢), SHRKco aims to do its part in turning the tide. The plan? Use the incredibly preserved teeth of ancient sharks as a springboard to advocate for a more harmonious relationship with Mother Nature. 🌎
Jeff is all about transforming his pain into purpose, striving to make the world a better place—one shark tooth and one life lesson at a time. So, lend him your ears as he joins Jay Hicks to share his incredible story of tragedy, triumph, and teeth! 🌟

Guest Quotes:
🧠[00:05:29] Daniel: "This direct service with kids. I love this. But I didn't love making 19,000 a year. So some people said to me, all right, well, then you got to go to grad school. [...] it's this awesome dynamic environment."
💔[00:15:10] Daniel: "There is, I think, no greater feeling of failure you can have as a therapist than when you get that call that someone that you're working with has made a suicide attempt and unfortunately died by suicide..."
🐶[00:15:10] Daniel: "The Romer family started Paws for Patrick to try to connect young people with mental health issues to emotional support animals... The best therapists in the world, they can't be there for you at 3 in the morning. But your dog, your cat, your fish, whatever it is that brings you joy and connection, that can be there."
💪 [00:29:26] Daniel: "We're not promised happiness. We're just promised to have an experience... what kind of story do you want to be, what do you want your experience to be?" - An inspiring call to embrace life's experience and craft our own story despite the challenges.
🎨 [00:30:59] Jay: "I'm just standing in a portion. It's like paint by numbers or something like that. And each age is a different section. But, having the ability to be mindful enough to step back and look at the picture, live time, is the most difficult thing." - Jay's metaphor of life as a work of art, emphasizing the value of mindfulness and seeing the bigger picture.
🌱[00:35:25] Daniel: "It's just a matter of figuring out what is it that's going to connect me to the best version of myself. To help me to feel like, I'm only on this planet for so long, let's try to enjoy it a little bit."
💖[00:43:05] Daniel: "All an emotional support animal is, is, it's basically a statement that having this animal in your home might reduce the symptoms of your depression, anxiety, whatever you have. But there are a lot because there are many people who, like their landlords, will charge them extra fees or say you can't have animals here. And the point is, this is blocking people from the cheapest, most efficient mental health treatment we can possibly give them."
