Lori Vallow Daybell, widely known as the "Doomsday cult mom," is seeking to represent herself in her upcoming Arizona trial, where she faces charges related to the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, and the attempted murder of her niece’s ex-husband, Brandon Boudreaux. According to court documents, Vallow Daybell filed her request to waive her right to legal counsel on October 16, followed by a motion from her public defender on October 21 to withdraw from the case. However, the judge has postponed making a final decision on Vallow Daybell’s request until she completes a competency evaluation under Arizona's Rule 11 process, which will determine her mental fitness to represent herself in court. This isn’t Vallow Daybell’s first encounter with mental health evaluations. In February 2023, a psychiatric assessment revealed that she suffers from a “delusional disorder” strongly associated with “hyper-religiosity” and has an “unspecified personality disorder with narcissistic features.” This diagnosis followed nearly nine months spent in an Idaho state mental hospital to restore her competency before her Idaho murder trial, where she was ultimately deemed mentally fit to stand trial. Her case’s frequent delays and unusual twists have kept it in the national spotlight. During her Idaho trial, where she was convicted of murdering her two youngest children, Tylee Ryan and Joshua "JJ" Vallow, along with Tammy Daybell, the former wife of her fifth husband, Chad Daybell, prosecutors presented evidence of the couple’s extreme religious beliefs. Testimonies highlighted their shared ideology of "light" and "dark" souls, in which they allegedly believed certain individuals could be “dark souls” possessed by malevolent entities they referred to as “zombies.” Prosecutors argued that these beliefs fueled the pair's actions, asserting that Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell killed to remove “dark” souls from their lives, paving the way for their future together. Chad Daybell, a self-published author of apocalyptic fiction, is currently on death row following his conviction for the same murders in June. Their intertwined beliefs and relationship reportedly began as an affair while both were active in a “Doomsday cult” that held apocalyptic and extreme religious views. The prosecution in Idaho argued that Vallow Daybell and Daybell used these beliefs to justify their heinous acts, leading to an intense media frenzy and public intrigue around the case. Further adding to the intrigue, a recently released phone call between Vallow Daybell and her oldest son, Colby Ryan, shows her denying responsibility for her children’s deaths. In the call, Vallow Daybell claimed that her daughter, Tylee, accidentally killed JJ and then took her own life. “What if Tylee was holding JJ down and trying to get him not to scream and be loud in an apartment? What if she held him down too long and realized afterward what she had done?” she told Ryan, who responded with shock to his mother’s assertions. Vallow Daybell also claimed to have “run out” of the apartment upon finding her children dead, suggesting that someone else disposed of their bodies. “I wasn’t aware what happened to them after I left that scene,” she added. “Their spirits were gone from their bodies. They were already in heaven.” The Arizona trial, initially scheduled for February 24, 2025, now hinges on Vallow Daybell’s upcoming mental health evaluation, which will determine if she is fit to represent herself in court. Vallow Daybell, already serving a life sentence without parole in Idaho, continues to captivate public interest as her legal proceedings unfold, marked by extreme religious beliefs, chilling statements, and mounting legal battles. Chad Daybell's Idaho home, the site where the bodies of Tylee Ryan and JJ Vallow were discovered in June 2021, has been sold to a local nonprofit organization. The Fremont County property, which also saw the death of Chad's first wife, Tammy Daybell, in October 2019, was purchased by SJ Healing Crossroads Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to helping those affected by traumatic experiences. Court records reviewed by Court TV confirmed the sale, which occurred after Chad Daybell and his second wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, were convicted of multiple charges in connection to the deaths. Chad was sentenced to death, while Lori received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Before the sale, ownership of the property had been transferred to Chad's defense attorney, John Prior, through a quitclaim deed, a move revealed during Chad’s trial by a witness. After Chad's conviction, the property was listed for sale in June and subsequently purchased by SJ Healing Crossroads Inc. for $350,000. The nonprofit organization was founded by a local couple who chose to remain anonymous. Their primary concern was to prevent the property from being "exploited as a  macabre tourist attraction," as reported by KSL-TV. "We feel compassion for the families and the community, and we didn’t want to see it purchased by someone whose intentions were inappropriate," the couple shared. "There were rumors about how someone wanted to buy it and turn it into an… Airbnb and we just couldn’t let that happen." In line with their mission, the couple is now raising funds to demolish the home and other structures on the property. A statement on the SJ Healing Crossroads website reads: "SJ Healing Crossroad’s provides community help and support for those affected by traumatic experience or loss. We recently purchased the property formerly owned by Chad Daybell in Rexburg, Idaho… The funds donated will be used to remove the house and outbuildings. This will be a start in changing the property into a positive place where such a tragedy occurred." The fate of properties linked to tragic events often sparks public interest. In a similar move, the house where four University of Idaho students were murdered was demolished in December, with the suspect, Bryan Kohberger, expected to face trial next year. Likewise, a three-story building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the site of the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history, was demolished in June. Additionally, the Moselle property where Alex Murdaugh murdered his wife and youngest son has changed hands multiple times since his conviction. The recent sale of Chad Daybell's home and its impending demolition underscore a growing trend to transform these sites of sorrow into spaces that foster healing and community support. SJ Healing Crossroads Inc. aims to turn the page on this chapter of Rexburg's history by creating a positive and supportive environment where the community can come together to heal from the trauma inflicted by such a tragic event. The Idaho home once owned by convicted murderer Chad Daybell has hit the market, listed at $350,000. This seemingly ordinary property in Rexburg, ID, is infamous for being the site where the remains of Daybell's two stepchildren, Joshua "JJ" Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 17, were discovered buried in the backyard in June 2020. Daybell, recently sentenced to death for his role in the murders, left behind this four-bedroom, 1.5-bath ranch-style home, built in 1960. The home sits on just under 4 acres of land and features 1,644 square feet of living space. The property is now listed on Realtor.com, and its sale is expected to attract attention due to its notorious past. The discovery of the children’s bodies in the backyard shocked the nation. Buried alongside the children were the Daybell family's deceased pets, a grim detail that has forever marked the property. This dark history is a significant hurdle for any potential buyer to consider. According to property records, Daybell transferred ownership of the home to his attorney, John Prior, in 2021. This move was likely made to help defray Daybell's mounting legal costs. Now, the task of selling the property falls to Prior, who must find a buyer willing to overlook its gruesome history. The interior of the home, as seen in available pictures, features a basic, mostly white paint scheme. The living room and kitchen show signs of wear typical of a home built in the 1960s. The kitchen includes a window over the sink and a small island, while the main living area has a tiled hearth with a TV placed in front of it, obscuring whether there's a working fireplace. There’s also space for an upright piano and two easy chairs, adding to its mid-century charm. Despite its historical and emotional weight, the property offers significant potential. Buyers must decide whether to rehabilitate the existing structure or demolish it, a decision that echoes the fates of other homes tied to high-profile crimes. The killings, carried out as part of a "doomsday" plot, have left a lasting impact on the community. While Daybell has been sentenced to death, the lengthy appeals process and the infrequency of executions in Idaho mean it could be years before his sentence is carried out. Meanwhile, the home where these horrific events unfolded remains a poignant reminder of the tragedy. The listing itself lacks the usual flowery descriptions seen in real estate promotions, likely due to the property’s dark past. **Hashtags:**   #ChadDaybell #LoriVallowDaybell #JJVallow #TyleeRyan #IdahoRealEstate #TrueCrime #RexburgID Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a move to protect the privacy and dignity of the victims' families, Judge Steven Boyce has permanently sealed nearly 100 exhibits from the high-profile Chad Daybell murder trial. The decision, announced after Daybell was sentenced to death for the murders of Tammy Daybell, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, and Tylee Ryan, comes in response to multiple requests for access to the evidence from authors and media members. “Certain requests seek to obtain all of the exhibits in this case, with some expressly requesting the autopsy photos published to the jury,” Judge Boyce explained in his order. “The Court notes that at trial those photos were published to the jurors, the parties, the Court, and in some instances privately to the victims, upon their request. They were not, however, publicly disseminated.” Judge Boyce stressed the importance of balancing the victims' rights with the public's right to information, particularly highlighting the impact on the families involved. He noted that several victim impact statements during the sentencing expressed deep distress over the behavior of individuals claiming to be media. These individuals, Boyce pointed out, have often sensationalized the tragedy, causing ongoing psychological trauma to the families. “The Court was particularly moved by several victim impact statements at sentencing expressly criticizing individuals proclaiming to be ‘media’ who, in the course of this case, have disrupted the lives of the families of these victims,” Boyce wrote. “Some of those family members described in detail the psychological trauma they have unfairly been subjected to by the ‘media,’ simply because they had some familial relationship to the victims in this case.” Boyce clarified that his reference to “media” does not include established and historically recognized reporting agencies but rather targets "true crime" bloggers and YouTubers who have exploited the case for sensational content. By sealing 97 exhibits, including autopsy photos and images of human remains found on Daybell’s property, Boyce aims to protect the families from further distress. “The interests of the victims and their family members to be spared the ongoing trauma of such sensitive or gruesome material being disseminated is not outweighed by the right of public disclosure of this evidence,” Boyce wrote. “Victims Tylee Ryan, JJ Vallow, Tamara Douglas Daybell and their family members’ respect, dignity and privacy are best protected by the continued sealing of these exhibits.” This decision underscores the court’s commitment to prioritizing the mental health and privacy of those directly affected by the tragic events, ensuring that they are not further victimized by public exposure to graphic evidence. As the legal proceedings surrounding Chad Daybell's case continue to unfold, the court's ruling reflects a broader concern about the ethical responsibilities of media coverage in high-profile criminal cases. I've been LDS for 50 years and don't even recognize the church you think you are describing and condemning. You might want to learn a little more about it before you condemn 16 million members. Lori's church isn't at fault here. She is.
