I think I recently heard that in the last episode of Scrubs, JD admits that he did put the penny in the door. what a d***.
never before have I wished y'all researched a bit more, then you would know the "alternative" ending is the original ending, and the test audiences didn't like it and that's why they went with the theatrical cut. you would also know this is based on a short story, and Craig 100% nailed why the story is called that, and it's even clearer there.
