In the 1960s, a strange new cult emerged in Manhattan's Upper West Side out of the Sullivan Institute. A cult created by shady "therapist" Saul Newton, who twisted the psychoanalytical teachings of Henry Stack Sullivan into something insidious - a way from him to sleep with paying therapy patients, have them move onto his compound, and play god over their lives. He and a few of his wives would run their scam for decades. They convinced members to live on their compound, pay to be in continual therapy, and pay to put on propaganda plays at their Fourth Wall Theater. Members also paid to be sexually used by cult leadership, leadership that decided who they had sex with, who they could have kids with, who would raise those kids, and so much more. Cult! Cult! This week we investigate the life and crimes of one of the Freeway Killers. Patrick Kearney, the Trash Bag Killer, was convicted for 21 murders, confessed to 32, but is suspected of up to 43 killings of both boys and young men between 1962 and 1977 in Southern California. Lesser known then the other Freeway Killers, previous Suck subjects Randy "Scorecard Killer" Kraft and William "The Freeway Strangler" Bonin, Patrick Kearney at first appears less brutal than his murderous counterparts. And in a way he was. He never tortured his victims... while they were alive. His primary motivation seems to have been necrophilia. But in another way, he was worse than the other two killers, because his victims tended to be younger. One victim was only five years old. Another depraved serial killer chapter is written in Timesuck's book of true crime today. Wet Hot Bad Magic Summer Camps are ON SALE!  BadMagicMerch.com Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: We're giving $14,533 to The Museum of Tolerance - the only museum of its kind in the world, and an additional $1,614  to the scholarship fund this month. Today we dig into the life of Julius Caesar and the final days of the Roman Republic. How was Caesar and what was Rome when he lived there? How did he transform himself from a random minor noble in a Republic full of fandom nobles, into one of the most powerful man in Rome and one of the most known historical figures of all time? Today's tale if full of alliances, betrayals, a very confusing Roman political system, and more as I try my best not to ruin the tale of the man who set Rome on the path to becoming an empire.  Hail Nimrod! Help Ean find Uncle Buck!  https://www.facebook.com/groups/703874246429031/permalink/2624879937661776/?mibextid=Nif5ozWet Hot Bad Magic Summer Camps go on sale for everyone Friday, January 20th, at Noon PT. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: We're giving $14,533 to The Museum of Tolerance - the only museum of its kind in the world, and an additional $1,614  to the scholarship fund this month. What do you think you know about Amanda Knox? Do you think she was a sex-crazed party girl who got away with the murder of Meredith Kercher in Italy in 2007? That's what I thought before I dug into the research for this episode. I do not think that anymore. The case against her is the sloppiest murder trial I've ever looked into. Outlandish investigative bias, ridiculous crime lab mistakes, and a court system where jurors are allowed to be influenced by the media during the trial. And in this case, the media was mostly tabloids. And the tabloids - fed nonsense by the prosecutor in Knox's case - continually printed completely fabricated and slanderous theories about Amanda. The court of public opinion convicted her of Meredith's murder and forever tarnished her reputation... but did she have ANYTHING to do with her roommate's death? Was she even sex-crazed? Did the media and the Italian legal system get ANYTHING right about her in her first trial? We have a wild one this week. Enjoy! Wet Hot Bad Magic Summer Camps coming up quick!  Tickets go on sale the week of JANUARY 16TH. Today we dig into the history of Dungeons and Dragons and look at what influences Gary Gygax and others drew from to create such an immersive and addictive RPG experience. We'll examine the long history of wargaming and fantasy literature to understand where games like D&D come from. And I'll lay out exactly how D&D came to be associated with Satanic influences. Fight! We take a look this week at the incredibly inspirational life of Helen Keller. She accomplished SO much despite completely losing her sight and ability to hear at the age of just 19 months. Had the miracle worker Anne Sullivan not entered her life when she did, I don't think we'd know Helen's name today. Anne's life - also so incredible. Their intertwined story got me all fired up. We also take a look back at what went on at Bad Magic in 2022 and what we hope to accomplish going forward. Thank you all for sticking by us while we navigated through a lot of behind-the-scenes drama this past year. Despite the drama, still had SO many great moments, and hope to have even more in 2023. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: We gave a total of $37,547 to the Bad Magic Giving Tree! Josef Mengele was a great guy! Just very misunderstood. Wait, no. I'm thinking of someone else. Josef Mengele was a MONSTER. His complete and total lack of empathy for anyone not a member of Hitler's nonsensical racial purity dream boggles the mind. He saw his experimental patients at the Auschwitz  concentration camp as nothing more than lab rats who happened to kind of look human. His experiments were cruel and misguided. And mostly dealt with identical twins. Child twins. And saddest of all - his cruelty did not stand out amongst his peers. He was but one of many, many monsters. A product of Nazi brainwashing that had gone on for so long, reality had been inverted. Evil was good, and good was evil in many ways. We look at all of this today. And sorry for the timing! It was a voted-in topic, and is probably about the LEAST festive topic we could Suck this week. But - I did find it fascinating and hope you do too. And next week will be lighter - I promise! :) Hail Nimrod and Happy Holidays! Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: We gave a total of $37,547 to the Bad Magic Giving Tree! Herb Baumeister was VERY likely the I-70 Strangler, killing a suspected nine boys and men between 1980 and 1990. And then, over the next six years, he seems to have killed at least another twenty-five men and boys and buried them on his Indianapolis area property. And now this property - Fox Hollow Farms - is reportedly VERY haunted. Today we explore what we know about Herb's life, go over the many suspected crimes, and how he was about to be arrested before he took his own life. And then, after our timeline, explore claims that his old Westfield, Indiana property is haunted. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: We gave a total of $37,547 to the Bad Magic Giving Tree! Evangelical End Times pastor Mike Bickle founded the International House of Prayer in 1999, later renamed IHOPKC, in Kansas City after saying God had told him to do so in a series of prophecies. Former members have referred to it as a cult. Is it? Or is it an organization, with its focus on modern day prophecy,  where cult leaders can easily recruit followers?  In 2012, IHOPKC member Bethany Deaton was found dead, and investigators looking into her suicide (originally thought to be a murder case), uncovered a small offshoot cult within IHOPKC lead by Tyler Deaton, a charismatic young man and IHOPKC adherent who felt, like Mike Bickle, that he was also a modern prophet. He also felt that God had, like with Bickle, tasked him with helping raise an army of spiritual warriors to do battle with Satan's minions in an imminent, apocalyptic showdown between good and evil. No shortage of supposed prophets in another cult, cult, cult edition... of Timesuck. Get tour tickets at dancummins.tv Watch the Suck on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_OlTMeKCuTkMerch: https://www.badmagicmerch.comDiscord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89vWant to join the Cult of the Curious private Facebook Group? Strange and thought provoking episode today! In the 1940s, 50s, and early 60s, animal behavior researcher John B Calhoun ran a number of experiments on rodents regarding how their behavior would be affected by increased urbanization if all their basic needs were made. The results were terrifying. Crowded rats and mice became increasingly violent and lost their reproductive instincts to the point that eventually, the utopia went extinct after enduring a final phase full of random violent attacks, apathy, cannibalism and more. Could the increased urbanization of humanity also lead to our species' extinction as Calhoun warned?  Or are we humans too different from rodents to presume that what happens to mice and rat would also happen to humans? I found today's episode one of the most thought provoking we've done in quite  some time. Hope you do too! Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: We donated $15,228 to the United Heroes League, who provide free sports equipment, game tickets, cash grants, skill development camps, and special experiences to military families across the US & Canada. The Pacific War may have been even more brutal than the War in Europe. Imperial Japan had a ferocious fighting force, they despised their enemies unlike even the Nazis, and they arguably tormented locals unlike any conquering army in modern history. The stories of local civilians being raped, tortured and killed en masse are truly disturbing. We also examine disturbing acts committed by the allies - like the brutal firebombing of Tokyo.  Today we examine how Imperial Japan rose to power, how their attack on Pearl Harbor was decades in the making, and how the Allies defeated them.  AND... no Typewriter sound beds! :) Hail Nimrod! Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: We donated $15,228 to the United Heroes League, who provide free sports equipment, game tickets, cash grants, skill development camps, and special experiences to military families across the US & Canada. Another whopper of a topic that could not be more action packed. WW2. Going over the war in Europe today - as much as we can in roughly three hours. The scale of WW2.... so massive.  Over sixty million people died. OVER sixty MILLION. More people killed in less than a decade than all the people killed in two centuries of Mongol invasions. On numerous occasions, over 100,000 people would die in a single DAY. And it could have been so much worse had not the Allied powers defeated the primary Axis Powers of Germany, Japan, and Italy. Forgive my mispronunciations and focus on the enormity of this war in today's we are lucky to be living in a (mostly) free world right now, edition, of Timesuck.   Bad Magic Giving Tree Info: Starting Monday  November 21st at 12:00 Noon PT, we will be accepting applications for this season's giving tree on our website: badmagicmerch.com Only the first fifty applicants will be accepted! So much to go over in under three hours! Why are indigenous women on reservations in the US being killed at a rate ten times the national average? Why are indigenous women in Canada being murdered six times as often as other women?  The answer is complex. It goes back to the first Europeans who colonized the New World and the precedents they set for the treatment of native women. And in the US, much of the MMIW crisis is related to the very confusing jurisdictional nightmare of tribal law versus state, county, and federal laws on reservations. It is WAY too complicated and nonsensical to allow any law enforcement agency to solve anything. What a mess! How did we get here? How do we get to a better place? I address all of this as best I can today, on Timesuck. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: It’s November and it is our tradition here at bad magic to donate to a veteran cause every November, in honor of Veteran’s Day. 320 - Cannibal Cop

On October 25, 2012, NYPD Office Gilberto Valle was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping after his estranged wife Kathleen had turned her computer over to the FBI following using spyware and uncovering Gil's sexual obsession with cannibalism. He'd been sharing photos of her and other women with other cannibalism fetishists and writing in graphic detail about how badly he wanted to have her kidnapped, raped, tortured, killed, and eaten. Was Gil planning on killing his wife and other women? Or was he does sharing fantasies? Did he get arrested and sent to prison for committing nothing more than thought crimes? We dig into Gil's story today, and take the longest look at cannibalism we've done so far. What is humanity's history with cannibalism? Is it bad for you? Why do some people become sexually aroused by the thought of eating human flesh? All this and more on another morbidly curious  edition of Timesuck. How much do you know about America's first documented serial killers, The Bloody Harpes? Micajah and Wiley Harpe went on a crazy murder spree out on the western American frontier, starting in late 1798. The murdered men, women, children, and even babies. And they'd been bad, murderous men long before their final year of terror. They'd ran with a gang of river pirates, they'd been members of a Tory rape gang during the Revolutionary War. They went on raids with a band of Cherokee warriors. They LOVED to try and split a skull in two with a tomahawk. Their entire crazy true crime story told this week.  Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: This month we donated $15,029 to Guide Dogs for the Blind, with an additional $1,669 added to our Scholarship Fund! Today we cover the formation of the infamous Bloods and Crips gang rivalry. How did it get started? Why did it begin in South Central Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s? The Crips were founded by two high schoolers named Raymond Washington and Stanley “Tookie” Williams, who formed an alliance to protect their neighborhoods from other young people who were harassing them. And then very quickly, gang violence escalated far beyond beating up other kids with your fists to  drive-by shootings, over 15,000 murders, and controlling much of the nation's drug trade. Hope you find all this info as interesting as I did. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: This month we donated $15,029 to Guide Dogs for the Blind, with an additional $1,669 added to our Scholarship Fund! For four months in 1974, 28 year old Paul John Knowles went on a reckless murder spree across the United States that claimed the lives of at least 18 people. He killed men, women, seniors, and small children. He strangled some, shot others, and stabbed still others. Some crimes were sexual, and some weren't.  The man who had spent more than half his life incarcerated in some form for a variety of petty, generally theft-related crimes suddenly became very, VERY violent. Why? That's what we explore in today's real-life monster, fit-for-October, true crime edition of Timesuck. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: This month we donated $15,029 to Guide Dogs for the Blind, with an additional $1,669 added to our Scholarship Fund! Is Bayer AG really EVIL? Or have they, like a lot of companies done both really good things - like marketing aspirin and other valuable medicine around the world - and really bad things, like market heroin after they knew it was dangerous, and perform deadly drug experiments on concentration camp victims? Yeah - that last one is real, REAL bad. But - how many corporate hands are truly clean? How many companies buy minerals from conflict zones, or materials from sweatshops? How many other companies today have Nazi ties, or more recent track records of selling products they knew were much deadlier than they were publicly letting on? Today we look at Bayer and Monsanto, and the dirty deeds they've done, but also, we zoom out and look at multinational corporations in general. Should we be more afraid of The State? Or the private sector? Get tour tickets at dancummins.tv Get Scared to Death LIVE tickets at badmagicmerch.com  October  27th, 6P PST/9PM EST. The name The Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God might not sound familiar, but in the world of cults, it should be. Only one cult in modern history has ever had more people die in its final act, the Peoples Temple's Jonestown Massacre.  778 people died in Uganda in early 2000 - murdered by cult leaders who had failed to correctly predict the day the world would end and the apocalypse would begin, on four different occasions. Today we explore what this cult was about - including the messages its leaders received from their preposterous "visions" of Mother Mary - and we also explore how and why this cult was able to flourish in Uganda in the 1990s. Decades of chaos had left many in the nation ready to receive proclamations of an impending apocalypse. Get tour tickets at dancummins.tv Get Scared to Death LIVE tickets at badmagicmerch.com  October  27th, 6P PST/9PM EST. Get ready to meet one of my comedy heroes, but only if you can handle a LOT of profanity. George Carlin, following the path of his mentor, Lenny Bruce, kicked the doors of censorship down so people like myself could have careers in comedy, and not worry about being arrested for saying something "obscene."  Today, we learn about the amazing, prolific, inspiring life of George Carlin - how a boy raised by a single mother in New York City grew up to become a radio DJ, then part of two man comedy team, then a solo nightclub act who first achieved success after some early struggles as a clean-cut, mainstream comic. He next decided to follow his counterculture leanings only to lose it all, rebuild into something better, nearly lose it all again, and then become the Carlin of legend. Carlin battled a crippling cocaine addiction, domestic problems at home, a business that wrote him off numerous times, battles with a government that tried to censor him over and over again, and much more to end up with fourteen HBO comedy specials and the designation of one of the best, if not THE best to ever do it - the father of modern standup. Myself and the rest of the comedy community owe him a huge debt of gratitude, and I'm excited to share his life with you here today, on another biographical episode, of Timesuck. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation:  In honor of the passing of Jeff Burton from the Rizzuto Show aka the Rizz Show on 105.7 FM in St Louis, we are donating $16,640 to Jeff's charity of choice - Kids Rock Cancer. Great podcast! I wish I had a history teach teach the way you do! It would Proably be the most popular class in high school!! This podcast does tell the truth about the Spanish. However humans are humans and do commit hetrocities to each other regardless of race. Today's society tends to find it more terrible if a diferent race does it to a different ethnicity from ther own.. Why doesn't violence against there own race have the same effect or outrage!!?? Human life is precious and is terrible when it is terminated violently regardless who commits it!!!! The Indians did fight with each other and did horrible things to each other which included murder, rape, took prisoners and did humans sacrafices(Indigenous people in Mexico some as high as a thousand in a day.) all done to fellow Indians! So my question is: How come when it comes to history this events do not anger people as much as European Colinization..? I am not justifying anyone or to say that one race is better or worse than the other , it's just simple observation. Not sorry for the long message. 3 outta 5 stars wouldn't change a thing!!! love the podcast ! I thinm you and the bad magic crew are bunch of great Meatsacks and Keep on Sucking! a gun magazine is what you put bullets into and slide into the gun the word clip comes from the word stripper clip it is basically a long metal thing you can line bullets up in slide into the top of your gun slide the bullets down the strip and into the guns magazine in one movement and then remove the metal stripper clip and close the bolt

Served our country? Don't think so. The US military serves as the paramilitary for US corporate interests. Last time the military wasn't involved in imperialism was World War 2.

It's revealing that even the story of a white man actually killing black people cannot be told. Because the narrative of the above reproach gay man cannot be diminished in any way. I love this show. I really like to hear mr Cummins. But I'm really surprised that he told this story. For several years I thought there weren't any stories or topics he'd shy away from or be scared to cover. Not so anymore. I don't blame him though. I probably wouldn't risk it either if I were in his position.

Dan's about 10 years younger than me. Maybe he actually believes these boys and men my age were overtly, blatantly and continually (or even occasionally) discriminated against by the boy scouts, in school, in little league, in the job market, in the housing market. But he would be 100% wrong. Why would you repeat stuff clearly not true just because a black kid tells you it is. It boggles the mind that smart, well intentioned people would repeat that nonsense. It's counterproductive. And dishonest. And actually increases racial tensions.

I love this show. Have listened for years. You cannot believe a lot of the stuff said in this one. I understand times have changed the last several years, but dan would've never said some of these things in say 2020. To effect change, which I'm positive dan would like to and is striving towards towards positives. But if we're not honest about everything, nothing will ever change. At least not for the better. You cannot gloss over violence, criminality, generations not working and being dependent. Saying we too rigidly enforce our laws, will not stop the crime. Just make the crime legal. Saying "if you don't support the police and if you stand against them you'll be in trouble" isn't racist. It's common sense.

As I was listening to this episode, the song "I'm not Jesus" by Apocalyptica featuring Corey Taylor ( Slip Knot) fit so perfectly with this episode. If you've never heard it...check it out..amazing song!!
