How do you go about asking for what you want in the workplace? No one really teaches you how to have difficult conversations when it comes to asking for the compensation you deserve, so it can be hard to speak up and advocate for yourself. The reality is if we want to have any hope of closing the gender pay gap in medicine then we have to learn to ask for what we want. On top of that, you deserve to be paid for your value! Our guest, Linda Street, MD, is a former client turned negotiation coach who is also a physician in practice right now. She’s here to teach us about negotiation. Dr. Linda Street is a board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist and Life Coach who focuses specifically on physician negotiations. I want to propose an alternative to work/life balance. What if we worked towards work/life alignment instead? I don’t know about you, but I cringe when I hear the term “work/life balance.” The more we try to achieve it, the worse we feel about ourselves. For something to be balanced, it has to be perfectly matched on both sides, and I just don’t think that’s realistic when it comes to work and life. That’s why I prefer to think of getting my work and life aligned. In this episode, I’m talking about the difference between balance and alignment and why I think one makes more sense than the other when it comes to our work and lives. If you feel defeated constantly trying to find the perfect balance, I feel you, and I’m here to give you permission to stop. I’m sharing four categories for you to think about to help you thrive. You have so much to offer and what you offer is so valuable, you deserve to be thriving while you do it. We tend to think of winning or losing as black or white. It’s one or the other. What if that didn’t have to be the case?Welcome to the second episode in the New Year, New Thoughts series. In this episode, I’m talking all about chapter 3 of How to Lose Weight for the Last Time - reframing losing. This is the first episode in the New Year, New Thoughts series that I’m hosting here on the podcast.I’m rejecting the concept of “new year, new you,” because I don’t think you need to be a new you. I think it’s okay to accept yourself just the way you are right now. In this series, I’ll be elaborating on some of the chapters from my book, How to Lose Weight for the Last Time: Brain-Based Solutions for Permanent Weight Loss. I’ll talk about what is said in the book, and then I’ll dive deeper into it here on the podcast. This episode is all about chapter 2, “Emotional Eating: Why You Always Want Food,” and we’re talking about how to change your food-related thoughts. Why is it so hard to break old habits and create new ones?Really it comes down to the science behind how your brain works. The more you think a certain thought, the more you strengthen that neural pathway in your brain, and the easier it becomes to think that thought again. In this episode, we’re talking about the challenges of blazing new neural pathways alone vs. with help. I have quite a story for you to illustrate my point that involves a very chaotic family ski trip and a lot of learning curves. Do you struggle to spend money on yourself?Whenever the Weight Loss for Doctors Only program opens up, I hear from women physicians who are interested in it but can’t bring themselves to sign up. They want results, they know it would help them, but they just can’t do it. I want to explore why we struggle so much to invest in ourselves. As a doctor, you are highly influential in other people’s lives, so it’s logical that when you are at your best physically and mentally, you are better able to positively influence the lives that you touch. If investing in yourself is the way to achieve that, isn’t it the best thing to do? In this episode, I'm teaching you how to reframe your thinking about investing in yourself and sharing an example from my life of a time I almost talked myself out of investing in myself. You’ll learn what toxic independence is, where it comes from, and how to overcome it. You might be surprised to learn as you listen that you have more toxic independence traits than you think! I was surprised too. I hope this episode helps you become more aware of your own thoughts and actions and maybe even start to depend on others a little (or a lot) more. Could your relationship with food be affecting your pet’s health?Nadina Cojocaru is here to talk to us about how pets become overweight as a result of being overfed by their owners. When a pet parent is no longer emotionally eating, it is common for them to start offering more food to their pet instead. Nadina sees many overweight pets who have been emotionally overfed by their owners and she wants to help. She knows how fun it can feel to excessively treat your pet, but she wants to help owners understand the issues that can arise as a result. Giving your pet too much food is not loving, so let’s talk about some other ways to show them love and keep them healthy!Nadina provides the practical tools for vets just like herself to beat the burnout, and the stress, and create a sustainable life that they LOVE - and she has a LOT of fun whilst doing it! Have you ever had a little stumble and felt like you ruined your whole plan; like you’ll never be able to lose that weight? If you stumbled on the sidewalk, it wouldn’t stop you from ever going for a walk again, right? So how do we take that approach to stumbling and apply it to weight loss? We all stumble physically and sometimes we stumble figuratively on our journeys to weight loss or freedom around food. In this episode, I’m teaching you how to handle a little stumble so that it doesn’t ruin your day or your plan. There’s no way you’re going to go through the process of losing weight permanently without having some stumbles, so you’re better off preparing for them than trying to pretend they’ll never happen. A little stumble is not a big deal, but it can be all too easy to turn it into a big deal in your head through the way you talk to yourself. I want to share a method for approaching those little stumbles so that you can support yourself and stop that negative self-talk.
