Description

In November 1993, a veteran discovers the body of a woman on a dirt road near Interstate-10 in Mobile, Alabama. She’s nude, drained of blood, and decapitated. But despite the horrific nature of the murder, it garners little sympathy in the press and detectives fail to close the case. Over the course of 8 episodes, host Sarah Cailean recounts her three-year investigation into this unsolved and perplexing murder that seems to leave more questions than answers. With the full support of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, she revisits the original investigation, digs up new evidence, and interviews new suspects - recording every step of the way. Cailean hopes to rectify the mistakes of the past and bring some answers to a family still struggling to make sense of what happened – and uncover just why it has been so hard to talk about.

Ep.1: Renée

In November 1993, a veteran discovers the body of a woman on a little road near Interstate-10 in Mobile, Alabama. She’s nude, drained of blood, and decapitated. But despite the horrific nature of the murder, it garners little sympathy in the press and, worse, detectives fail to understand the fundamentals of what they’re dealing with. Can a new approach to the case potentially uncover the person responsible for this gruesome beheading?  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Sarah revisits the original 1993 investigation into the murder of Renee Bergeron and pretty quickly realizes that the detectives stumbled from the outset. Sarah tries to account for what - and who - they failed to understand in their original investigation.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Interstate-10 is known as the serial killer’s highway among criminologists. Given the brutal nature of her injuries and the fact that she was found dead on a service road running parallel to the highway, Sarah investigates the possibility that a serial killer might be responsible for Renée's death. Ep.4: Friend or Foe?

Ep.4: Friend or Foe?

As Sarah tries to further understand the life Renée led in Mobile, she learns of a close friend of hers named David. But she doesn’t know if he is dead or alive. So, she decides to see if she can find him and talk to him. What she discovers sends her investigation hurtling in a new direction. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Ep.5: Maria

Ep.5: Maria

2023-03-2245:1712

When the Sheriff’s Office first processed the dead body found along Interstate-10, they identified her as Maria Martinez - not Renée Bergeron. This was not a simple clerical mistake. Turns out, Renée lived much of her life under the alter ego Maria. So who exactly is Maria? And why did Renée use her name? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Ep.6: Drunk Talkers

Ep.6: Drunk Talkers

2023-03-2936:365

Is a distressing 1993 tip made about Renée's murder merely the result of a drunk talker… or something far more sinister? Drunk talkers are dime a dozen when it comes to murder cases, but this tip looks a lot more promising to Sarah than others she’s come across.  Hosted on Acast. Ep.7: Theories

Ep.7: Theories

2023-04-0547:0812

Sarah’s investigation has turned up two different theories of the case, and with that, two very different suspects. So, now, she’s left asking: could either of them be the culprit? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Ep.8: Less Dead

Ep.8: Less Dead

2023-04-1250:0011

In any cold case, three theories circulate among the public: the victim was a snitch; there was human trafficking; or the police did it. As Sarah’s investigation heats up, she is left wondering whether all three theories might have played some role in this case… Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I wish they had a reenactment of the phone interview - I can hardly hear what he’s saying

At the very least, David is involved. He has tremendous guilt. He tried to convince himself that she was incapable of loving anyone, was a snitch, was a crackhead, a crappy mom, and generally just a bad person just to help assuage that guilt. He had to stop visiting the family because his gifts weren't enough to replace Renee like he hoped they would be. It was too hard to see their pain. Maybe he didn't kill or mutilate her himself, but I bet he lured her there, or told the guy that she snitched on him, or something that caused her death.

I also think the David was into Renee but she would never sleep with him. His stance on Black people, and Renee (allegedly) having a mixed baby, means that Renee put Black men over David in his mind. He's not "over cooperating," he's constantly trying to put them on the trail of others.

David cannot keep his lies straight. He creeps around the death scene. He stalked her family. He had her favorite necklace. He claims he doesn't know the victim very well then contradicts himself constantly. And he clearly does not respect women. He's definitely my #1 suspect at this point.

David is a bit racist, isn't he? 😳

why didnt we hear more about ALL of those pages in the report, the hundreds that they didnt have paper and ink for? surely there were interviews with her friends at the time who have died since then. i dont think David did it, but he knows more than he is saying. he knows they were getting rid of her for snitching and they put her on the side of the road as a symbol not to do that to them. why didnt they send Ronnie's dna in? there just has to be so much more to the story and im not sure why it was all left out.

I REALLY wish she would a) stop interrupting her detective partner and b) actually listen to what he's saying. It's clear that she is just waiting to interject and NEVER lets him speak.

Aauuuggghhh! I am so IRRITATED at how often homicide detectives, when questioning possible suspects, will ask an important question and instead of just waiting for an answer, they'll immediately follow it - before the person can even ANSWER - with, "orrrr, {insert easy response that suspect can then claim and get out of answering more truthfully}." for example "... Take you downtown and play the recording to help jog your memory?.... Orrrr, do you think it's been too long and you just won't remember?" 😳😳😳 wtffffff?? Of COURSE they're going to take the easy answer and not get INVOLVED. FFSSSS. (lol, sorry... It's just a long-term pet peeve of mine.) 🤷🏼‍♀️

She is justifiably creeped out by David. So am I. But I am skeptical he is the murderer. Instead I think he may bear responsibility for her murder, by being a "friend" who possibly introduced her to "sex work". I don't understand why they are minimizing the sexual element of this crime so urgently. I think this nightmare was created by some monster or monster's, plural, Ideas about sex. I do not think this crime was about "rage" or "retaliation" but about sadism, misogyny and strangeness. I think this time the crime goes against the statistics and Renee may not have known her killer that well or at all. I think think the two were connected through "sex work". I also think a local killer would have concealed her, like Tara Grinstead.

"......because I had no choice." But by all means let's scoff at the idea of human trafficking and coercion. Even though it has existed since forever but only recently been legally recognized. Let's just assume that "Maria" really didn't want to be safe at home. Also, maybe her boyfriend Maurice was the one who beat her up. Maybe it was someone else like a john. I wish this story were not proceeding so naively.

Serial killer and very weird guy Charlie Brandt had a similar M O and has not been investigated nearly enough for cases he could be connected to.

weird about the autopsy report. maybe someone gave it to him even though he should have never had it. because they weren't careful with this investigation.

This podcast is still pretty messy. The music is so loud and all the other background noise isn't necessary. The swooshing/slicing sound is incredibly annoying and was in the first episode as well. Overall, I have high hopes for it though.
