What does it take to walk around the world, and what motivates someone to take on such a massive challenge? Tom Turcich enjoys walking, a lot. Actually, he might enjoy walking too much. Over seven years, he and his dog, Savannah, walked 25,000 miles across thirty-eight countries to become the 10th person and first dog to walk around the world.  In this special episode, I’m handing the mic over to Tom to interview Alexander Campbell, who started his own world walk in February 2023. Together, they share their unique perspectives on the physical, emotional, and logistical challenges of walking across multiple continents. At the time of this recording, Alex is 12,000km into his 40,000km trek. Starting from his hometown in Sydney, Australia, he’s traveled through Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, and recently completed crossing Nepal through the Himalayas. This episode offers a unique chance to listen in on a conversation between two world walkers, each with their own incredible stories. You'll hear about the challenges and experiences they’ve faced, from managing nutrition and health in remote areas to handling unexpected obstacles like border closures and injuries. Learn how Tom and Alex both approach walking as a way to build confidence and face their fears and why taking breaks along the way is crucial for long-term endurance. What long-distance walk or quest would you want to go on? I'd love to hear about it, and I hope you’ll share by sending me an audio message. Travel Legend Rick Steves

Travel Legend Rick Steves

2024-09-0501:26:42

Traveling abroad had such an impact on Rick early on, that he chose to dedicate his life to helping others see the world. In 1976, he launched Rick Steves’ Europe and, over time, built a travel empire along with a community of raving fans (including me!). His best-selling guidebook series, public television show, public radio show, syndicated travel column, small group tours, free resources, and other media all align with his core mission to help people get out and travel Europe. Rick has had a huge influence on me, both personally and professionally. His recommendations helped shape some of my early trips to Europe, ultimately leading to my life of travel. Rick also showed me it was possible to craft a career around my passion for helping others travel the world. Needless to say, he’s been a dream guest for me, and it was an absolute honor to chat with him and share this conversation with you today. What was your biggest takeaway from this episode? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you will share them by sending me an audio message. Andi Cross is a 15-year growth strategist who went from the C-suite to scuba gear. Learning to swim at the age of 30, she later became a certified divemaster and founded the Edges of Earth expedition: a two-year, 50+ destination diving expedition traveling to some of the most remote locations around the planet aimed at driving visibility to conservation efforts and positive impact news from around the globe.  Andi talks about the unconventional approach she took to pursue her passion for the ocean despite not being a trained scientist and having no prior experience. We talk about how she fused her experience in the corporate world to invent her own path, the importance of finding identity and belonging, breaking traditional rules, and why you need to put yourself out there no matter how awkward (+ some great advice on cold outreach!).  She shares her top five destinations for eco-diving, her planning process for the Edges of Earth expedition, how to choose dive spots based on sustainability, and the role that everyone plays in ocean conservation. What are your passions, and how can you carve your own path in that industry? If you don’t ask, you’ll never know. I'd love to hear what they are, and I hope you’ll share them by sending me an audio message. Premium Passport: Get ad-free episodes, exclusive content, and access to all episodes for only $3/month. When Terry Repak and her husband moved to West Africa with two small children at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1990s, she seized the opportunity to connect with people of other cultures and bear witness to the ravages of the disease.  Today, Terry shares what she learned from this experience and the countless ways that living abroad can be both rewarding and challenging, especially with the constant push-pull between the excitement of new experiences and the longing for home. Terry is the author of Circling Home—What I Learned By Living Elsewhere, which chronicles the adventures and challenges of raising children to be global citizens and trying to find home in countries as diverse as the Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Switzerland. Her memoir spotlights the complexity, struggles, and profound lessons at the heart of the expat journey. You’ll gain insights into navigating the potential risks of moving to another country, why forming deeper connections is key to a fulfilling experience abroad, and why it requires a different kind of openness and a willingness to question preconceptions and judgments. How has forming deeper connections changed your travel experiences? I'd love to hear your insights, and I hope you’ll share them by sending me an audio message. I'm a big podcast listener and for awhile I just listened to this one occasionally as a fun change of pace. Over the last couple months however I started listening much more seriously and obsessively. I've started actually considering how I could practically pursue the digital nomad lifestyle and attempting to make contacts and start building my online skillet. This podcast has been the primary motivation for that and I am so grateful. I also like jasons interview style, he let's his guests have their say he just jokes and chimes in a lot, but I think it's usually a good conversational flow. The range and quality of his guests though is outstanding, how he finds so many awesome people to bring on the show I'll never know. Awesome show keep up the great work Jason.

This is really want I needed right now. Just finished Uni, moved to a new city to get a good job. Feeling conflicted between the typical, get the job, get the house, the family life (which is usually considered successful, and what people work towards) versus actually feeling what might be right for me or just trying different things.
