All across America, thousands of hate crimes are committed every year, but only a small number of them get reported. An even smaller fraction are ever prosecuted. We’re here to figure out why.

Invisible Hate is a podcast that sheds light on the worst true crimes that are motivated by things like race, religion, or sexual orientation and are usually perpetrated against minorities. In each episode, we examine one crime in depth and then discuss whether or not it should be classified as a hate crime.

Matthew Shepard was a young gay man who was brutally beaten, tortured, and left to die in Wyoming in October 1998. He was found tied to a fence and unconscious, and was taken to a hospital, where he remained in a coma for several days before he passed away due to his injuries. 23-year-old African-American student Richard Collins III was waiting for an Uber ride at bus stop with two friends when he was approached by Sean Urbanski, who stabbed him in an unprovoked attack. In 1984, Charlie Howard, a young gay man from Bangor, Maine, was walking home when he was harassed by three young men with homophobic slurs. The situation escalated, and Howard was thrown off a bridge into the Kenduskeag Stream, where he drowned. In November 1988, Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian immigrant, was killed by a group of three white supremacist skinheads in Portland, Oregon. The three men, members of the racist group East Side White Pride, beat Seraw to death with a baseball bat. Saadia and Asad discuss the attack and how it was racially motivated. Kendrick Johnson was a high school student who was found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat at his school in Valdosta, Georgia in 2013. The official cause of death was ruled as accidental, but his family and supporters have claimed that he was murdered. Despite multiple investigations, no official evidence of foul play was found and the case remains unsolved. We take a deeper look. Sandeep Dhaliwal was a sheriff's deputy in Harris County, Texas when he was shot and killed in the line of duty on September 27, 2019.
