All across America, thousands of hate crimes are committed every year, but only a small number of them get reported. An even smaller fraction are ever prosecuted. We’re here to figure out why.

Invisible Hate is a podcast that sheds light on the worst true crimes that are motivated by things like race, religion, or sexual orientation and are usually perpetrated against minorities. In each episode, we examine one crime in depth and then discuss whether or not it should be classified as a hate crime.

In Jun 1998, James Byrd Jr. caught a ride with three white men. Instead of taking him home, the three men took Byrd to a remote county road out of town to beat him. On July 18, 2015, police in Riverton, Wyoming respond to a shooting. A man has just walked into an alcohol detox facility called the Center of Hope and shot two patients asleep in their bed. Both patients are members of the Northern Arapaho native tribe—one dies, and the other hangs onto his life despite a critical headshot wound. Saadia and Asad discuss the case. On August 10, 1999, Buford Furrow Jr. drove from Washington state to the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, where he opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon at a Jewish Community Center, injuring five people, including four children. He then drove to a nearby synagogue, where he shot and killed a Filipino-American postal worker, before fleeing the scene. In 1984, Charlie Howard, a young gay man from Bangor, Maine, was walking home when he was harassed by three young men with homophobic slurs. The situation escalated, and Howard was thrown off a bridge into the Kenduskeag Stream, where he drowned. In November 1988, Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian immigrant, was killed by a group of three white supremacist skinheads in Portland, Oregon. Kendrick Johnson was a high school student who was found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat at his school in Valdosta, Georgia in 2013. The official cause of death was ruled as accidental, but his family and supporters have claimed that he was murdered.
