Digest

This podcast episode uses the "Draw-a-Scientist Test" to illustrate historical gender bias in science, setting the stage for the incredible story of Elzada Clover and Lois Jodder's 1938 expedition down the Colorado River. The episode details their meticulous preparations, the perilous journey fraught with near-death experiences and challenging rapids, and the sexism they encountered from both the media and fellow boaters. Despite these obstacles, Clover and Jodder successfully mapped the Grand Canyon's flora, becoming the first documented non-indigenous women to complete the entire river journey. Their achievement is presented as a powerful example of resilience and a challenge to societal norms. The episode concludes by announcing a new companion podcast, "Watch Her Cook," which will profile other remarkable women throughout history who defied expectations and made significant contributions. Listeners are encouraged to support both podcasts.

Show Notes

Botanists Elzada Clover and Lois Jotter changed the stereotype of women in botany when they found a love for not the delicate flowers, but the cacti with thorns and the vegetation that thrived in the most inhospitable environments. They set out to do something that had never been done before, to be the first women to boat the entirety of the Colorado River and map out the flora of the Grand Canyon. If successful, they would be the first women to ever survive the trip.
