CANES POSTCAST: PENALTIES, COACHING SINK MIAMI HURRICANES in 26-20 OT Loss @ SMU, CANES FALL TO 6-2
Description
Carson Beck threw his 2nd interception of the game on 3rd & 6 from inside the 10 yard-line in overtime, and SMU’s TJ Harden scored on a one-yard run on to cap a 25 yard-drive (all runs) to beat Miami 26-20 and all but knock the ‘Canes out of the ACC Championship race and the college football playoffs.
This was the 2nd loss in the last 3 games for Miami, once 5-0 and appearing to be destined for big things under HC Mario Cristobal.
The Hurricanes dominated SMU for most of the game- holding the Mustangs to -2 yards rushing in regulation- but they committed a season-high 12 penalties for 96 yards, Wlijah Loftin dropped a sure touchdown pass and Beck’s 1st interception came on a deep throw that was right in the hands of JoJo Trader, who juggled it into the air and into the DB’s hands.
SMU kicker Sam Keltner’s tied the game at 20 with a 38-yard field goal with :25 left in regulation after an extremely questionable penalty was called on Miami’s backup Defensive End Marquise Lightfoot. Lightfoot was whistled for an unnecessary roughness penalty on his hit on quarterback Kevin Jennings- after Miami called a timeout and the play was blown dead- to give the Mustangs a 1st down when they were facing 4th & 9 with just 1:08 left in regulation.
Keltner had just barely missed his previous attempt from 43 yards in the Mustangs’ previous drive when the ball sailed just outside the right upright.
After the game-tying kick, Mario Cristobal chose to have Beck take a knee at the end of regulation with 25 seconds left and one timeout left on their own 25 yard-line.
Miami was only up 10-7 at halftime even though they dominated the 1st half, holding SMU to -6 rushing yards and 121 total yards. (93 on 3 big plays) But the Hurricanes committed a season-high 8 penalties for 60 yards in the 1st half, (most on offense) Elijah Loftin dropped the easy TD pass and Beck’s interception- which led to SMU’s only 1st half TD- was juggled then dropped by Trader.
The ‘Canes retook the lead 17-14 in the 3rd quarter after falling behind 14-10 on SMU’s touchdown on their opening drive of the 2nd half.
SMU Outscored Miami 19-10 in the 2nd half & overtime. The Mustangs ran the ball on every play on their game-winning 25-yard drive to finish the game with 23 yards rushing.
The Hurricanes had the ball for 15:00 more time of possession than the Mustangs.
The ‘Canes will probably drop down into the 20’s in the rankings, but this loss all but eliminates them from the playoffs and even worse, the ACC Championship, which (somehow) Miami has still yet to win.
Beck finished 26-38 for 224 yards and touchdown passes to Trader- filling in for the injured CJ Daniels- and Alex Bauman, plus the 2 interceptions.
Mark Fletcher Jr. ran for 84 yards on 16 carries to lead the Miami rushing attack, which finished with 159 yards on 40 carries, but couldn’t finish off the Mustangs in the 2nd half, largely because of bad penalties committed by the Miami offense.
Trader (5 catches, 81 yards, TD) Keelan Marion (5-77) and Malachi Toney (9-70) led the Miami receiving corps.
