Case 339: Waco (Part 2/3)
Digest
This episode delves into two significant confrontations between federal law enforcement and armed groups: Ruby Ridge and the Waco Siege. It begins with a content warning and introduces Randy Weaver and his survivalist family on Ruby Ridge, Idaho. A fatal encounter with US Marshals, resulting in the death of Weaver's son and a Marshal, escalated into a standoff. The ATF's investigation into Weaver, fueled by accusations of threats and alleged white supremacist ties, led to weapons charges and further fueled the conflict. The FBI took over, altering rules of engagement, which led to the fatal shooting of Weaver's wife and injury of Kevin Harris. After a prolonged standoff, Weaver surrendered and was later acquitted of murder but sentenced for bail jumping, eventually suing the government. The narrative then shifts to the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas, who observed Ruby Ridge as a potential precursor to an attack on their compound. The ATF's investigation into the Branch Davidians began due to suspicious firearm orders. Negative publicity from Ruby Ridge delayed the ATF's planned raid, codenamed Operation Trojan Horse. Despite gathering intelligence through undercover agents and witness testimony, the raid was accelerated due to media exposure. The botched raid on February 28th resulted in a violent gun battle, multiple casualties, and the FBI taking over. Negotiations with David Koresh led to the release of children in exchange for broadcast opportunities, and a surrender plan was arranged. However, the episode implies this plan was not fully executed, leading to the tragic conclusion of the Waco Siege. The episode also provides an overview of the ATF's role, challenges, and unpopularity during this period.
