Digest

This podcast details the complex homicide investigation of John Yelnik, a dentist found murdered in his home. Detective Lydick, new to homicide, initially focuses on Yelnik's financial problems and strained relationships, including his divorce from Michelle and rumors of an affair. A key piece of evidence, a $15,000 check, initially misdirects the investigation. The autopsy reveals a brutal murder. Interviews with neighbors, the Yus family, and colleagues reveal Yelnik's professional and personal struggles, including accusations of abuse from Michelle. The involvement of psychics hired by Melissa Yus adds an unusual element, temporarily diverting attention. Frustration with Lydick's progress leads John's family to pressure the Attorney General for intervention, which allows Lydick to send evidence to the FBI. Crucially, Lydick's strategic withholding of evidence, initially done to avoid interference from the state police due to her boyfriend's involvement, is revealed. The FBI's DNA analysis ultimately identifies Michelle's boyfriend, Kevin Foley, a state trooper, as the killer, driven by jealousy and anger. The podcast highlights the complexities of homicide investigations, the ethical considerations of withholding evidence, and the unexpected twists and turns that can occur in even seemingly straightforward cases.

Show Notes

One day in the spring of 2006, a detective stood next to a refrigerator in her police station, holding a little container full of evidence. She knew that what she was about to do represented a breach of protocol – but that wasn’t going to stop her. Because she was working her first murder case ever, and she was afraid she wasn’t going to be able to catch the killer. She had decided she was going to run her case her way – no matter what. She was supposed to send the container in her hand to the state crime lab for analysis. But she wasn’t going to do that. Instead, she placed the container in the refrigerator, and then shut the door.
