Japan's Film Incentive Program Extended with Multi-Year Subsidies
Update: 2025-12-10
Description
Japans Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is extending its film and television incentive program through fiscal year 2026, offering enhanced benefits for filmmakers. The biggest change is the introduction of multi-year subsidies, allowing projects to receive financial support for up to two years. This flexibility will make it easier for larger, more complex productions to plan their shoots in Japan. The revamped program is set to launch in late spring 2026, with application guidelines announced at a later date. Since its start in 2023, the program has supported eighteen film and television projects, including The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson and the U.S.-Japan co-production Rental Family starring Brendan Fraser.
