Description
Chana has traced the history of the school from its founding and come to the present. But now: One unexpected last chapter. Last year, the school district for BHS mandated a change in the zoning process to ensure all middle schools would be racially integrated. No longer can white families hoard resources in a few select schools. Black and Latino parents have been demanding this change since the late 1950s. The courts have mandated it. Chana asks: How did this happen? And is this a blueprint for real, systemic change?
As a person who fought school consolidation herself, the parallels between what happened at the school in New York City and what happened in our district here in northeastern Pennsylvania are shocking, extraordinarily similar, and equally frustrating. It is amazing to me how superintendent Scott used the same exact excuses to dismiss evidence and public opinion as the superintendent in my school district did when we did the same type of survey. Long story short these people want to stay in power, these people don't want to hear from the public, and they ultimately believe that they know better than us.
The premise of this series, is that schools need white children in them to be good. A deeply disturbing thought -and quite racist. If all children were valued equally by the education system, the colour of their skin would be irrelevent. Blaming white parents for a systemic failing of the state is appalling.
