Ryan Borgwardt
Digest
This podcast details the case of Ryan Borgwart, who faked his own death after a kayaking accident. The initial investigation presumed drowning, with extensive searches conducted. However, a crucial discovery—his name appearing in a Canadian border patrol database—revealed he was still alive. Digital forensics uncovered his elaborate plan: taking out life insurance, opening foreign bank accounts, and using a second passport. He meticulously staged the accident, including purchasing items at Walmart and using an inflatable boat. Investigators tracked him down using a photo of a woman from Uzbekistan found on his laptop. He initially refused to return to the US but eventually did so and was arrested. He faces charges of obstructing an officer. The podcast contrasts this case with the previously discussed Hannah Kobayashi case, highlighting the difference between accidental disappearance and deliberate deception. The emotional toll on Borgwart's family and the search volunteers is also discussed, along with the financial restitution sought.
