Q&A
What are some unique ways flight anxiety manifests in Black women?
Black women often experience more intense and chronic anxiety, sometimes manifesting as isolated sleep paralysis. Cultural factors, like the stigma around showing weakness, contribute to underreporting and delayed treatment.
What are some effective strategies for managing flight anxiety?
Techniques include CBT, exposure therapy (gradual or flooding), deep breathing exercises, grounding techniques, mindfulness, and creating personalized mantras or calming music. Airline resources and support programs are also available.
How can racism impact flight anxiety in Black women?
Daily experiences of racism increase stress and heighten anxiety levels. Lack of representation among flight crew can also exacerbate feelings of anxiety and isolation. The pressure to "perform" a certain image can add to the stress.
What are some tips from a flight attendant's perspective on managing anxiety during a flight?
Flight attendants are trained to handle medical emergencies and anxiety. Direct interaction, reassurance, and clear communication about turbulence are helpful. Choosing a seat towards the front of the plane might reduce turbulence sensitivity. Avoiding caffeine before flying is also recommended.
