No shame or shade for not getting it, but in 19th century newspapers the ads from doctors that promised prescriptions without examinations were for 'STD specialist' quacks. The whole business of treating syphilis was based on the way it 'went away' whatever TF you did, before coming back worse. The newspaper-based branch of those 'services' was there for those that couldn't bring themselves to see a doctor in person. Given that a properly-qualified medic would likely prescribe mercury-containing stuff, some of the quacks sending snake-oil without ever seeing the sufferer were arguably more helpful.
