You only need to watch 3 minutes and listen to the voicemail to know that this was totally justified. I don't care if he was a nice kid (who verbally abused his girlfriend), I don't care if he was a boyscout or what he was going through. It also doesn't matter that he wasn't armed because if he wasn't shot, he could have incapacitated the father and destroyed that family. It's disgusting that his family insists on making him a victim.
