Much of this conversation simply adopted the framing and assumptions of neo-liberalism. E.g., they talked about the U.S. not being sufficiently "cost-competitive" as opposed to other countries being less ethical, such as with environmental controls, labor regulations, rule of law, etc. Values aren't free. The more interesting conversation might've been about how to reconcile that issue and whether the U.S. wants to continue an exploitative system that merely exports our vices. E.g., continuing the current trajectory likely guarantees foreign production, incentives for hegemonic controls over those countries, and tightened controls on IP (the U.S. product)--which likely entails more surveillance and spying. Also, Ezra seems to think vocal fry lends gravitas; it doesn't, at least, not for me.
